Evanston Civic Center

The Chicago Zen Center (CZC) is a Harada-Yasutani Zen practice center located in Evanston, Illinois near Northwestern University currently led by Abbot Yusan Graham. Established in 1974, the Chicago Zen Center formed around an interested group of students who had attended a workshop given by Philip Kapleau in the early 1970s. For many years the center was an affiliate of the Rochester Zen Center in Rochester New York, which had sent teachers there throughout the year to hold sesshins. Today, Chicago Zen Center acts independently of the Rochester Zen Center [1].

Noyes is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, on the Purple Line in Evanston, Illinois. It is located at 909 Noyes Street (directional coordinates 2225 north, 900 west), just a few blocks west of the north end of Northwestern University's Evanston campus. The Noyes Cultural Center is also nearby. This area of Evanston is a mix of residential and light commercial properties. The automated voice for the station was used in the song "Chamber the Cartridge" by the melodic hardcore band, Rise Against.

Castle Tower Apartments is a historic apartment building at 2212-2226 Sherman Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story building was built in 1928. The building has a "U" shape, a common form for apartment buildings in Evanston, with a large courtyard in the middle. Architects Cable & Spitz designed the building in the Tudor Revival style. Their design includes several rounded and square towers along the sides of the building, crenellation on the towers and roofline, sections of half-timbering, and patches of limestone on the otherwise brick exterior.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

Members of Society Acting in Cooperation (MOSAIC), also known as MOSAIC Co-op, is a housing cooperative in Evanston, Illinois, United States. It is the only housing co-op serving Northwestern University students, though it is not affiliated with the university. The co-op draws its membership from students of Northwestern as well as non-students. Members are committed to limiting environmental impact on the community and providing vegetarian/vegan cuisine. MOSAIC frequently hosts Northwestern student group activities, as well as its own events, such as open-mic nights and crafting workshops. The co-op currently states its mission as follows: "Through cooperative action, MOSAIC seeks to develop a diverse, inclusive community which inspires and empowers creative, conscious, sustainable living."MOSAIC is a member of NASCO.

Canal Shores Golf Course, (formerly known as the Peter N. Jans Memorial Golf Course and the Evanston Wilmette Community Golf Course) is an 82-acre, 18-hole, par 60 golf course located in a suburban residential neighborhood on the east side of Evanston, Illinois and Wilmette, Illinois. Founded in 1919 on the banks of the North Shore Channel of the Chicago River, the course is 3,904 yards in length, featuring a narrow and tree-lined fairway and two over-the-water holes. Eleven of the holes are located in Evanston, Illinois and 7 holes are in Wilmette, Illinois.

Rookwood Apartments is a historic apartment building at 718-734 Noyes Street in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1927. Architects Conner & O'Connor designed the building in the Tudor Revival style. The building's design includes limestone trim, large square blocks of stone separating the casement windows, and ashlar stone entrances and courtyard walls. The building is noteworthy among Evanston's apartments for its two courtyards; one is open and faces the street, while the second is more private and to the side of the building.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

The Building at 1929–1931 Sherman Avenue is a historic apartment building in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1928. The building has an L-shaped layout with a half courtyard, a relatively common layout for Evanston's apartments. Architects Maher and McGrew, who designed several other buildings in Evanston, designed the building in the Tudor Revival style. The building's design features large sections of rough limestone on the basement level, limestone quoins, segmental arched windows, half-timbering, and a series of gables and dormers at the roof line.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

Fanny's Restaurant was a notable eatery located at 1601 Simpson Street Evanston, IL 60201 USA (the first suburb north of the Chicago City Limits) between 1946 and 1987. It was an anomaly in that it was located in a working-class neighborhood and yet known the world over. Patrons included the Marshall Field Family, of department store fame. Both the salad dressing and meat sauce won the International Epicurian Award of France. It was cited by Chicago Magazine as one of the top 40 Chicago restaurants ever. According to that same Chicago Magazine article Kraft Foods offered $75,000 in 1948 to buy Fanny's salad dressing recipe. This offer was refused. The restaurant was closed due to the deteriorating health of the founder, Fanny Lazar née Bianucci. According to the May 11, 1991 Chicago Sun Times and Chicago Tribune obituaries, Fanny Lazar died at Saint Francis Hospital of Evanston. At some point, possibly in the 1960s, Fanny's products became available on grocery shelves and the business continues on today through mail order. For several years the restaurant building at Simpson Street and Ashland Avenue was shuttered, then later occupied by rental tenants. During this period there was difficulty maintaining tenants because of what was described as ‘strange happenings’ and the claims that the building was haunted. However, during the condominium boom which occurred in the United States during the first ten years of the 21st Century it was heavily altered and converted into loft spaces. According to a July 5, 1998 Chicago Sun Times article a second version of the restaurant was opened in Union Pier, MI. It appears to remain in business as of 2011, as it can be found through searching local tourism web sites. Fanny's in Union Pier Michigan was located in the Gordon Beach Inn, It's no longer in business. Fanny's meat sauce and salad dressing can still be purchased through World Wide Food Products in Evanston, IL

Central is a Purple Line station of the Chicago Transit Authority 'L' system. Located at 1024 Central Street in Evanston, Illinois (directional coordinates 2600 north, 1000 west), the elevated platform sits above Central Street, half a block west of Ridge Avenue. The station itself, a Beaux-Arts structure designed by noted transit architect Arthur Gerber, is on the south side of Central Street and is entered at street level, with an auxiliary exit on the north side of the street.

Ridgewood is a historic apartment building located at 1703–1713 Ridge Avenue (at Church Street) in Evanston, Illinois. The Chicago architectural firm of Atchison & Edbrooke designed the building in 1905; while the firm was only active from 1904 to 1908, it designed several buildings in Evanston. The building has a Prairie School design, a popular residential style at the time that was nonetheless unusual for an apartment complex. The three-story brick building is shaped in a "U" and features half-octagonal bays at regular intervals. Six apartments are on each floor; each features Prairie woodwork, cabinets built into the walls, and a fireplace.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 4, 1978.

The Andridge Apartments is a historic apartment building located at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Church Street in Evanston, Illinois. The building was built in 1923 and designed by Robert C. Ostergren. The "S"-shaped building has two courtyards, a front courtyard facing Ridge Avenue and a rear courtyard for units on Church Street. The building was designed in the Tudor Revival style and features regularly spaced bays with gables, limestone trim, and Tudor arches around its entrances. On March 15, 1984, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
