Newnham College, Cambridge

Newnham is a suburb of the city of Cambridge in England. Historically, the name refers to a hamlet centred on a mill on the River Cam, a short distance to the southwest of the city centre. The modern council ward of Newnham covers much of the west of the city. Several Cambridge University colleges are situated in this ward, including Newnham, Wolfson, Robinson, Selwyn and Darwin. In modern times Newnham has become one of the most affluent areas of Cambridge and sometimes features in national quality of life surveys.Newnham includes Grantchester Meadows and Lammas Land, a recreation ground and playground.

The Cambridge Whitefriars, or Newnham Whitefriars, were a community of Carmelite friars who first settled in Chesterton outside Cambridge in the thirteenth century. Although granted permission by Henry III to build a house there in 1247, they instead moved into a house in Newnham donated to them by Michael Malherbe in 1249. It was situated in the parish of St-Peter-outside-the-gate in Trumpington and so fell under the jurisdiction of the Hospital of St John the Evangelist. Extensive monastic cells, a cloister and a church were constructed on three acres of land in Newnham. In 1290, however, because frequent flooding made it difficult to attend lectures and acquire provisions, the friars obtained permission from Edward I to move to land on Milne Street within Cambridge. They remained there from 1292 until 1538, when, as a result of the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, their property was handed over to Queens' College, who demolished the monastic buildings. The site is now occupied by Walnut Tree Court and the college chapel. The only surviving remains can be seen in the well-preserved north wall of the Fellows' Garden, which formed the north wall of the Carmelite church. The locations of the sites in Chesterton and Newnham are unknown.

Lady Mitchell Hall (LMH) is a large lecture theatre owned by the University of Cambridge. It is located on the University's Sidgwick Site, north of Sidgwick Avenue in Cambridge, England. The lecture theatre is used for important general interest lectures, for example the annual Darwin lectures. The hall accommodates 500 people.The building is polygonal in shape, built of brick with a metal roof. It was built between 1956 and 1968 by Casson, Conder and Partners. It is a Grade II listed building.On 2 March 1969, Yoko Ono and John Lennon's first public concert together was held at Lady Mitchell Hall. To mark the 50th anniversary of the event, art historian and curator Gabriella Daris produced and gifted to the University of Cambridge a plaque which reads "Yoko Ono John Lennon Cambridge 1969". This was unveiled in the foyer of the Lady Mitchell Hall on 2 March 2019.

Sidgwick Avenue is a road located in western Cambridge, England. The avenue runs east-west and links Grange Road to the west with Queen's Road to the east. The line of the road continues northeast into central Cambridge as Silver Street. Sidgwick Avenue is flanked by Newnham College, Ridley Hall, Selwyn College and the Sidgwick Site of the University of Cambridge.

The Casimir Lewy Library is the library of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. The library is located in the Raised Faculty building on the Sidgwick Site, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge. It is open to all members of the university.

Selwyn College, Cambridge (formally Selwyn College in the University of Cambridge) is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college was founded in 1882 by the Selwyn Memorial Committee in memory of George Augustus Selwyn (1809–1878), the first Bishop of New Zealand (1841–1868), and subsequently Bishop of Lichfield (1868–1878). Its main buildings consist of three courts built of stone and brick (Old Court, Ann's Court, and Cripps Court). There are several secondary buildings, including adjacent townhouses and lodges serving as student hostels on Grange Road, West Road and Sidgwick Avenue. The college has some 60 fellows and 110 non-academic staff. In 2019, Selwyn was ranked eighth on the Tompkins Table of Cambridge colleges in order of undergraduates' performances in examinations, having been first in 2008. The college was ranked 16th out of 30 in an assessment of college wealth conducted by the student newspaper Varsity in November 2006. Selwyn's sister college at the University of Oxford is Keble College.

The Cambridge Faculty of Divinity is the divinity school of the University of Cambridge. It houses the Faculty Library.

The University of Cambridge was the birthplace of the 'Analytic' School of Philosophy in the early 20th century. The department is located in the Raised Faculty Building on the Sidgwick Site and is part of the Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities. The Faculty achieved the best possible results from The Times 2004 and the QAA Subject Review 2001 (24/24). In the UK as of 2020, it is ranked second by the Guardian, second by the Philosophical Gourmet Report, and fifth by the QS World University Rankings.

The Sidgwick Site is one of the largest sites within the University of Cambridge, England.

The Pendlebury Library of Music is the library of the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, England. The current building was completed in 1984, and was designed by Sir Leslie Martin. The library is located next to the West Road Concert Hall and the Faculty of Music's old building on the Sidgwick Site, West Road, Cambridge. The current classification system is somewhat similar to the one used for music at Cambridge University Library's Music Collections, and has a basic classification approach of a three-digit number. The library is open to all members of the university.

The Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology is a Roman Catholic theological college in Cambridge, England. The institute was founded in 1993 to provide religious and theological education to Catholic laywomen: it now offers theological education to both women and men, and to both Catholics and non-Catholics. It is named for Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. The institute is part of the Cambridge Theological Federation, through which courses and degrees are validated by either the University of Cambridge or Anglia Ruskin University.In November 2022, the college put its 0.45-hectare (1.1-acre) 12–14 Grange Road site up for sale for £5 million.
