The Smith Hill Historic District is a historic district located in northwestern Providence, Rhode Island, just west of the Rhode Island State House and Interstate 95. It includes 57-65 Brownell Street, 73-114 Holden Street, 23-80 Jewett Street, 189-240 Smith Street and 10-18 W. Park Street. This area is a densely built residential section, an isolated remnant of what was once a larger residential area. Most of the 41 properties are residential units built between 1870 and 1930, and are typically 2-1/2 or 3+1⁄2 stories in height. They are set on lot sizes ranging generally from 3000 to 5000 square feet, and are set close to the sidewalk. The only major non-residential buildings are St. Patrick's School at 244 Smith Street and "The Mohican" at 185-189 Smith Street; the latter is an Art Deco brick and concrete commercial block two stories in height.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

The Andrew Dickhaut Cottages Historic District encompasses a collection of historic worker cottages in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island, along with the home of their builder, Andrew Dickhaut. The cottages are located at 114—141 Bath Street (odd numbers), 6-18 Duke Street (even numbers), and the Dickhaut house is located at 377 Orms Street. The cottages are virtually identical 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame structures, set on small lots close to the sidewalk. Those on Bath Street were built in 1882, while those on Duke Street were built in 1892. This collection represents a remarkably well-preserved collection of worker housing, a building form which is often poorly documented.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Smith Street Primary School is an historic school at 396 Smith Street in Providence, Rhode Island. It is a large 2+1⁄2-story brick structure with a cross-gable roof. It was designed in Queen Anne style by William R. Walker & Son and built in 1885. The building occupies its site at an unusual angle, partially overhanging the sidewalk, and has an asymmetrical interior, a departure from the other schools the Walkers designed for the city. It was used as a school facility until 1967, and then housed administrative offices for twenty years. By the early 1980s it was in use as the Smith Hill Center—a non-profit neighborhood community service agency. It is one of three (out of fifteen) surviving schools built by the city in the 1880s.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Providence Fruit and Produce Warehouse Company Building was a historic building located at 6-64 Harris Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island. The building, a large three story warehouse facility, was built in 1929 by Jenks & Ballou, architects and engineers, with modest Moderne styling. The building served from 1929 to 1998 as the major distribution center for fresh fruits and vegetables in the state of Rhode Island, and was one of the centerpieces of the provisioning warehouse district of Providence north of the city center. Several of its bays were demolished in the 1980s to make way for a highway ramp, and the building was taken over by the state in 1998 and closed. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.The building was demolished in 2008 by Carpionato Properties to great controversy from local government and citizens.

Smith Hill is a neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island. Its traditional bounds are the Woonasquatucket River, the Chad Brown public housing complex, Interstate 95 and West River. The Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC) is located in the Smith Hill neighborhood and is adjacent to the VA hospital. The Rhode Island State House is also located on the border with Downtown. The name 'Smith Hill' is therefore used as a metonym for the Rhode Island state government and the Rhode Island General Assembly.

Rhode Island Locomotive Works was a steam locomotive manufacturing company in Providence, Rhode Island. The factory produced more than 3,400 locomotives between 1867 and 1906, when the plant's locomotive production was shut down. At its peak, the locomotive works employed about 1,400 men who could produce some 250 locomotives a year.

The Nicholson File Company Mill Complex is a historic industrial manufacturing complex at 1-45 Acorn Street in Providence, Rhode Island. It consists of 24 buildings occupying 7 acres (2.8 ha) of land, of which 20 are historically significant. The oldest of the buildings were built in 1865 to designs by William Nicholson, and the complex was regularly expanded over the decades through the early 20th century. The Nicholson File Company was a major producer of machine-made files, started by William Nicholson in 1859. The company manufactured precision tools used in the manufacture of armaments during the American Civil War for the Union Army, and closed the plant in 1959. It has been used by a variety of light industrial concerns since then.The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Smith Hill Library-A Community Library of Providence is one of the branch libraries of the Providence, Rhode Island, public library system. It is located at 31 Candace Street, in a single-story brick building designed by Albert Harkness and built in 1932 by contractor Clifford K. Rathbone. Stylistically the building is a mixture of Colonial Revival and Moderne features. The Smith Hill branch began as a delivery station in 1907, and had grown to occupy leased space, with an annual circulation of more than 70,000, by 1929. Circulation rose rapidly after the building's completion, reaching 119,000 in just three years. The building continues to act as a significant local community resource.The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. One of the oldest cities in New England, it was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian and religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence" which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers. The city developed as a busy port as it is situated at the mouth of the Providence River in Providence County, at the head of Narragansett Bay. Providence was one of the first cities in the country to industrialize and became noted for its textile manufacturing and subsequent machine tool, jewelry, and silverware industries. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and eight institutions of higher learning which have shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains some manufacturing activity. At the 2020 census, Providence had a population of 190,934, making it the third-most-populous city in New England after Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts.
