The Governor John L. Pennington House, at 410 E. Third St. in Yankton, South Dakota, was built in 1875. Also known as South Dakota Magazine Office in 1987, it is a simplified Italianate-style building. It was registered with the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.It was home during 1875 to 1891 of Dakota Territory governor John L. Pennington who served as governor for a four-year term from 1874 to 1878.

The Bruce-Donaldson House is a historic two-story house in Yankton, South Dakota. It was built in 1879 for James E. Bruce, who sold it to Fred Donaldson, an immigrant from Sweden who became a grocer in Yankton. It was designed in the Italianate architectural style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since March 5, 1982.

The Charles Gurney Hotel is a historic three-story building in Yankton, South Dakota. Replacing the original St. Charles Hotel (constructed in 1870 by J.W.C. Morrison of local cottonwood lumber), the present building was built in 1891 with brick and Sioux Falls granite. It was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style by architect J.H. Coxhead. It was originally known as the Hotel Pierce, and it was built where the 1870 St. Charles Hotel once stood. It was later renamed the Portland Hotel by its new owner, Alfred Crebbin, presumably in recognition of the importance of the local manufacture of Portland cement (see Western Portland Cement plant). In the 1940s, it was acquired and remodelled by Charles Gurney, and it became known as the Charles Gurney Hotel. It was purchased by Elza Anderson in 1962. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since August 3, 1979.

The Yankton Carnegie Library is a historic building in Yankton, South Dakota. It was built as a Carnegie library in 1902–03, and is Neoclassical style in style. It was built by German-born contractor August Goetz. It was a public library from 1903 to 1973.It served as the town's library from 1903 to 1973, and later served as the Lewis and Clark Mental Health Center.It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since August 7, 1979.

The Burns House is a historic house in Yankton, South Dakota. It was built in 1886 for Robert Burns, a banker who served as the president of the Mortgage Bank. It was acquired by George Durand, the vice president of Yankton College, in the 1900s. Durand and his wife were art collectors. The house was designed in the Queen Anne architectural style, with a tower. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since February 9, 2001.

The Missouri National Recreational River is a National Recreational River located on the border between Nebraska and South Dakota. The designation was first applied in 1978 to a 59-mile section of the Missouri River between Gavins Point Dam and Ponca State Park. In 1991, an additional 39-mile section between Fort Randall Dam and Niobrara, Nebraska, was added to the designation. These two stretches of the Missouri River are the only parts of the river between Montana and the mouth of the Missouri that remain undammed or unchannelized. The last 20 miles of the Niobrara River and 6 miles of Verdigre Creek were also added in 1991. The Missouri National Recreational River is managed by the National Park Service, with headquarters located in Yankton, South Dakota. Visitor centers are located at Ponca State Park, Niobrara State Park and the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center at Gavins Point Dam, overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake. It lies in parts of Boyd, Cedar, Dixon, and Knox counties in Nebraska, and Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Clay, Union, and Yankton counties in South Dakota.

The Meridian Highway Bridge is a bridge that formerly carried U.S. Route 81 across the Missouri River between Nebraska and South Dakota. The Meridian Highway Bridge connects Yankton, South Dakota with rural Cedar County, Nebraska. The Meridian Bridge is a double-deck bridge, with the top level having carried traffic into South Dakota from Nebraska, and the lower level having carried traffic into Nebraska from South Dakota. It was closed to all traffic in 2008, but reopened for use only by pedestrians and bicycles in 2011.

The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Depot in Yankton, South Dakota was built in 1905 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (otherwise known as The Milwaukee Road). Prior to the 1870s, Yankton was served by steamboats along the Missouri River. As service declined, railroads took over to serve the communities in South Dakota. In the late 1870s, the Dakota Southern Railroad entered Yankton. Shortly afterward, the Dakota Southern was bought by The Milwaukee Road. The Milwaukee Road then expanded westward toward Rapid City, South Dakota and the Black Hills. In 1905, The Milwaukee Road built its depot in Yankton. Using a common design, the depot is rectangular in shape and single story. It is built of brick with wood and stone trim. There is a covered area at one end of the depot that leads to the waiting room. A baggage room is located at the other end and the station agent's office is located between the two. As railroad passenger service declined after the 1940s, the depot was sold. The Milwaukee Road itself went bankrupt in the 1980s, and the tracks adjacent to the depot were sold to BNSF Railway predecessor Burlington Northern. At the time of nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the depot was used as offices for a local cable television company. In 2008, the depot houses the offices of an architectural firm. The depot was listed in the National Register because of its architecture and also because of it association with the commercial development of Yankton and the development of railroads in South Dakota.

The Fred Schnauber House is a historic house in Yankton, South Dakota. It was built in 1886 as a boarding house for Fred Schnauber's employees as well as railroad workers. Schnauber was a brewer and a bottler; he died in the 1920s. The house was later purchased by Martin Rathjen, and inherited by her great-nephew, John Coates, in the 1970s. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since January 31, 1985.

Yankton College was a private liberal arts college in Yankton, South Dakota, United States, affiliated with the Congregational Christian Churches (later the United Church of Christ). Yankton College produced nine Rhodes Scholars, more than any other South Dakota higher education institution.

The Federal Prison Camp, Yankton (FPC Yankton) is a minimum-security United States federal prison for male inmates in Yankton, South Dakota. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. The prison is situated on the former campus of Yankton College, which operated until 1984. The site was converted to a prison in 1988. FPC Yankton is located 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Sioux City, Iowa, and 85 miles (137 km) southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The William J. Fantle House is a historic house in Yankton, South Dakota. It was built in 1917 for William J. Fantle, the co-founder of Fantle Bros, a dry good store. It was designed in the Prairie School style by architect Peter J. Linhoff. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since October 10, 1989.
