North Eastern Railway War Memorial

The former York railway station served the city of York, England between 1841 and 1877. It is a Grade II* listed building.

The Grand, formerly the Grand Hotel and Spa, is a Grade II* listed hotel in York, England, the city's only 5-star hotel. Opened in May 2010 and renovated and extended in 2017–18, it is an Edwardian building dating to 1906, originally the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, with views of the York city walls and York Minster. It is owned by Splendid Hospitality Group.

The York City War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and located in York in the north of England. Proposals for commemorating York's war dead originated in 1919 but proved controversial. Initial discussions focused on whether a memorial should be a monument or should take on some utilitarian purpose. Several functional proposals were examined until a public meeting in January 1920 opted for a monument. The city engineer produced a cost estimate and the war memorial committee engaged Lutyens, who had recently been commissioned by the North Eastern Railway (NER) to design their own war memorial, also to be sited in York. Lutyens' first design was approved, but controversy enveloped proposals for both the city's and the NER's memorials. Members of the local community became concerned that the memorials as planned were not in keeping with York's existing architecture, especially as both were in close proximity to the ancient city walls, and that the NER's memorial would overshadow the city's. Continued public opposition forced the committee to abandon the proposed site in favour of one on Leeman Road, just outside the walls, and Lutyens submitted a new design of a War Cross and Stone of Remembrance to fit the location. This was scaled back to the cross alone due to lack of funds. Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), unveiled the memorial on 25 June 1925, six years after the memorial fund was opened. It consists of a stone cross 33 feet (10 metres) high on three stone blocks and a stone base, beneath which are two further blocks and two shallow steps. It sits in a memorial garden, with an entrance designed by Lutyens using the remaining funds for the memorial. The memorial itself is a grade II* listed building, having been upgraded when Lutyens' war memorials were designated a national collection in 2015. The piers and gate at the entrance to the garden are listed separately at grade II.

York City Rowing Club is a rowing club by the River Ouse in York, England. It has over 200 members, of all ages. The boathouse is on the west (here briefly south) bank of the river next to Lendal Bridge and in Memorial Gardens. The club has modern buildings but is three years older than the oldest coastal rowing club in Britain, Dover; it is 25 years younger than the oldest non-academic rowing club, Leander. The reach of canalised river it enjoys is unusually long – over 20 mi (32 km).

Station Road is a street in the city centre of York, in England.

The Principal York is an historic Grade II listed building on Station Road, adjacent to York railway station, England. It is a five-storey building of yellow Scarborough brick and was completed in 1878, a year after the present station opened.

Bathurst House is an historic building in the English city of York, North Yorkshire. A Grade II* listed building, standing at 86 Micklegate, part of the building dates to around 1727; it was made into three storeys around 1822. The iron railings at the front of the property are part of the listing.The property was built for Charles and Frances Bathurst. Upon Frances' death, she was buried in the church of St Martin-cum-Gregory across the street. Her tombstone stated she was "a person of excellent accomplishments both of body and mind, and adorned the several stations of life she went through".It became a hotel between 1911 and 1921, then York YWCA. The University of York owned it in the 1960s, before it became the home of a firm of chartered accountants, having sold for £1 million in 2017.

The Falcon is a historic pub on Micklegate in the city centre of York, in England. The establishment originated as an inn named The Falcon, in the 18th-century. It was first recorded in 1715, and in 1736, Francis Drake named it one of two notable inns on the street. In 1818, William Hargrove described it as the most notable inn on the road. Its site stretched back to Tanner Row, where its stables were located. With the opening of York railway station, the stagecoach trade declined, and the inn struggled. In 1842 and 1843, the site was redeveloped, being divided between a smaller pub (now 94 Micklegate) and a neighbouring house (now 96 Micklegate). The only surviving feature of the inn was a gilded carved figure of a falcon, acting as a pub sign. The Victorian buildings are of three storeys and an attic, and largely original sash windows above the ground floor. The pub also has a bay window on the first floor. There is a substantial cornice above the second floor. Inside, 96 Micklegate retains an original staircase, but the property has been converted into a shop. Since 1971, the pair of buildings has been Grade II listed. In 1981, a new cellar was added underneath the rear yard of the Falcon. In 2002, the pub was converted into a bar named "Rumours". However, in 2014 it returned to operating as a pub, under the name The Falcon Tap, and the original cellar was reopened. In 2017, permission was received to demolish modern rear extensions, and replace them with nine flats, and two more on the upper floors of the main building, while also halving the area of the bar. By 2018, it was listed in the Good Beer Guide. In 2018, it was purchased by Almero Holdings and closed unexpectedly for conversion into an aparthotel, intending to retain the pub on the ground floor. In 2022, it reopened, as "The Falcon", run by the owners of the Turning Point Brewery.

Micklegate House is a Grade I listed building in York, a city in England. The house lies on Micklegate, in the city centre. It was completed by 1752, as a town house for John Bourchier of Beningbrough Hall. It is often said to have been designed by John Carr, a local architect, as it is similar to other designs by him, although there is no firm evidence of this attribution.Bourchier died in 1759, and the house passed to his wife. When she died, in 1796, it was leased to James Walker, then to Joshua Crompton, who bought the freehold in 1815 and whose descendants lived in the property until 1896. The house was then used as business premises, and many of the fittings were sold, most of the best being moved to Treasurer's House.The house is the largest on the street, three stories high and seven bays wide. The front is of red brick, with stone dressings, and the rear of pink brick. Some original sash windows survive, as do a fireplace and bread oven on the second floor. The hall retains rich decoration and a grand staircase to the first floor, and the dining room and library on the ground floor also retain some original fittings.The house was listed in 1954, along with its railings and lamp brackets. In 2015, it was converted into the Safestay hostel.

Holy Trinity Church, Micklegate, York is a Grade I listed parish church in the Church of England in York.

70 and 72 Micklegate is a shop in the city centre of York, in England. The building originated around 1500, as a two-storey timber-framed house, on the north side of Micklegate, a major route into the city. In the 17th-century, a third storey was added, and around the same time, the whole building was extended to the rear. From 1802, the building was occupied by a saddler, who sublet parts of the large house, and made extensive alterations. The building was refronted in 1823, and further extensions were added to the rear. The rear extensions were partially demolished and rebuilt between 1970 and 1980.The building's facade is of dull red brick with narrow mortared joints. There are bow windows at first floor level, and at roof level there is a cornice and an early drainpipe. The ground floor shopfront is 20th-century, although an early fanlight survives above the door to number 70. Inside, 17th-century doors survive in the attic of 70, while there is a reused door from about 1700 on the second floor. The decoration in the front room on the first floor dates from the Regency period, and the staircase is from the 1800s. In 72, the staircase and much of the decoration dates from around 1810.From 1948, the entire building was occupied by Ken Spelman Books, until it closed in January 2022. The building has been Grade II* listed since 1954.

85–89 Micklegate is a Grade II* listed medieval building in the city centre of York, England. The building was constructed in about 1500, in the grounds of Micklegate Priory and facing onto Micklegate, one of the main streets in York. The building does not appear on John Speed's generally accurate map of the city in 1610, which has led to an argument that it was constructed after this date; but stylistic features, such as the double-jettying on the front and the crown post roof, point to an earlier date, and Speed's omission may have been in order to show the buildings associated with the priory more clearly.It is likely that the building was constructed to be rented out and provide more income for the priory. Its division into three properties is original, and originally each property had a single room on each of the three floors. Stairs appear to have originally been in annexes at the back of the buildings, but about 1600 a wing was added at the back of number 89, while in the 18th century one was added to number 87. Around 1660, the building was rendered to improve its weatherproofing. From at least the early 18th century, the properties were occupied by butchers. The current ground-floor shop windows are Victorian.The building was listed in 1954, but by 1967 it was in poor condition. It was restored by the Ings Property Company, the process including the removal of the external rendering, and it is now owned by the York Conservation Trust. The ground floor is used by shops, with apartments above.
