Avranches massacre

Avranches (French pronunciation: [avʁɑ̃ʃ] ; Norman: Avraunches) is a commune in the Manche department, and the region of Normandy, northwestern France. It is a subprefecture of the department. The inhabitants are called Avranchinais.

The Avranches–Saint-James tramway was a 17 kilometres (11 miles) metre gauge railway on the English Channel in the Manche département in the Normandy region of France, which was put into service on 29 July 1901 and operated until 31 December 1933.

The Tramway d'Avranches was a 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) long tramway system serving the coastal town of Avranches, France. Inaugurated in April 1907, the network consisted in a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) line stretching across the town centre. Traction was electric. The tram closed on 2 August 1914.

The arrondissement of Avranches is an arrondissement of France in the Manche department in the Normandy region. It has 134 communes. Its population is 134,724 (2016), and its area is 1,888.2 km2 (729.0 sq mi).

Avranchin is an area in Normandy, France corresponding to the territory of the Abrincatui, a tribe of Celts from whom the city of Avranches, the main town of the Avranchin, takes its name. In 867, by the Treaty of Compiègne, Charles the Bald gave the Avranchin to Salomon, King of Brittany. In 933, it was reunited with the Duchy of Normandy by William I of Normandy.

The canton of Avranches is an administrative division of the Manche department, northwestern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Avranches. It consists of the following communes:

The Château d'Avranches was a castle in Avranches, Manche, France. A castle has existed at Avranches since the 10th century. It was besieged by Francis I, Duke of Brittany, and Arthur de Richemont, with the English garrison surrendering on 12 May 1450. All that remains of it is a portion of the ramparts.

Avranches Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-André d'Avranches) was once a Roman Catholic cathedral in Avranches in Normandy. The seat of the Bishop of Avranches, it was a Gothic construction, notable as the place of the penance of Henry II of England in 1172 for the murder of Thomas Becket. It was destroyed completely during the French Revolution and the site remains unbuilt on. The Diocese of Avranches was not reinstated after the revolution but under the Concordat of 1801 was instead amalgamated with that of Coutances to form the Diocese of Coutances and Avranches.
