Terzo d'Aquileia (officially Terzo di Aquileia; Friulian: Tierç, locally Tiars; Bisiacco: Ters) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Udine. Terzo d'Aquileia borders the following municipalities: Aquileia, Cervignano del Friuli, Fiumicello Villa Vicentina, Grado, Torviscosa.

Aiello del Friuli (Friulian: Daèl) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southeast of Udine. Aiello del Friuli borders the following municipalities: Bagnaria Arsa, Campolongo al Torre, Cervignano del Friuli, Ruda, San Vito al Torre, Visco. Joannis is the birthplace of Enzo Bearzot, former Italian football player and manager, who won the 1982 FIFA World Cup as coach.

Ruda (Friulian: Rude) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of Udine. Ruda borders the following municipalities: Aiello del Friuli, Campolongo al Torre, Cervignano del Friuli, Fiumicello Villa Vicentina, San Pier d'Isonzo, Turriaco, Villesse. Ruda was the birthplace of footballer Tarcisio Burgnich.

Campolongo al Torre (Friulian: Cjamplunc) is a former comune of the Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, located about 40 km northwest of Trieste and about 25 km southeast of Udine. Since 2009 it has been one of the two principal centres of Campolongo Tapogliano, a municipality formed by its merger with the former comune of Tapogliano.

Torviscosa (Friulian: Tor di Zuin, locally Il Tor) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Udine. The municipality of Torviscosa contains the frazione (borough) of Malisana. Torviscosa borders the following municipalities: Bagnaria Arsa, Cervignano del Friuli, Gonars, Grado, Porpetto, San Giorgio di Nogaro, Terzo d'Aquileia.

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (Italian: Basilica Patriarcale di Santa Maria Assunta is the principal church in the town of Aquileia, in the Province of Udine and the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. The original church dated back to the fourth century. The current basilica was built in the eleventh century and rebuilt again in the thirteenth century. It is located on Via Sacra, overlooking the Piazza del Capitolo, along with the bell tower and baptistery.

Aquileia is an ancient Roman city in Italy, at the head of the Adriatic at the edge of the lagoons, about 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the sea, on the river Natiso (modern Natisone), the course of which has changed somewhat since Roman times. Today, the city is small (about 3,500 inhabitants), but it was large and prominent in classical antiquity as one of the world's largest cities with a population of 100,000 in the 2nd century CE and is one of the main archaeological sites of northern Italy. The Battle of the Isonzo, the Battle of the Aesontius, or the Battle of the Isontius, is the name given to the battle fought on August 28, 489 on the banks of the Isontius River, not far away from Aquileia. This river is now known as the Isonzo in Italian, and Soča in Slovene. Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, in 489 opened his first campaign against Odoacer to wrest Italy from him. On 28 August, the two armies met on the banks of the Isontius. Theodoric defeated Odoacer, who retreated. A second battle was fought at Verona.

The National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia is a museum in Aquileia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. It is one of the largest museums in Italy on Roman civilization. The museum is located at the Cassis Faraone villa and holds collections of statues, household and ornamental furnishings, gems, and coins. The museum was inaugurated in 1882, building on the private collection of Gian Domenico Bertoli which had been held at via Poppone since the 1700s. The first exhibition of the collection was in 1807 at the baptistery of the Basilica of Aquileia. In 1879 the Bertoli collection was acquired, and expanded the collection. Constructions took place at the gardens of Villa Cassis to accommodate the acquisitions.

The Patriarchate of Aquileia was an episcopal see and ecclesiastical province in northeastern Italy, originally centered in the ancient city of Aquileia, situated near the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It emerged in the 4th century as a metropolitan province, with jurisdiction over the Italian region of Venetia et Histria. In the second half of the 6th century, metropolitan bishops of Aquileia started to use the patriarchal title. Their residence was moved to Grado in 568, after the Lombard conquest of Aquileia. In 606, an internal schism occurred, and since that time there were two rival lines of Aquileian patriarchs: one in New Aquileia (Grado) with jurisdiction over the Byzantine-controlled coastal regions, and the other in Old Aquileia (later moved to Cormons). The first line (Grado) continued until 1451, while the second line (Cormons, later Cividale, and then Udine) continued until 1751. Patriarchs of the second line were also feudal lords of the Patriarchal State of Aquileia. A number of Aquileian church councils were held during the late antiquity and throughout the middle ages. Today, it is an titular archiepiscopal see.

The Siege of Aquileia is a siege battle that took place in 238 in the town of Aquileia during the Year of the Six Emperors which resulted in the assassination of Maximinus Thrax.

The Third Battle of the Isonzo was fought from 18 October through 4 November 1915 between the armies of Italy and Austria-Hungary.
