Wye School

The College of St Gregory and St Martin at Wye, commonly known as Wye College, was an education and research institution in the village of Wye, Kent. In 1447, Cardinal John Kempe founded his chantry there which also educated local children.: 18  As of 2020, it still includes a rare, complete example of medieval chantry college buildings.: 5  After abolition in 1545, parts of the premises were variously occupied as mansion, grammar school, charity school, infant school and national school, before purchase by Kent and Surrey County Councils to provide men's technical education.: 30, 36, 48, 49, 60  For over a hundred years Wye became the school, then college, of London University most concerned with rural subjects, including agricultural sciences; business management; agriculture; horticulture, and agricultural economics. Chemist and Actonian Prize winner, Louis Wain: 441  developed synthetic auxin selective herbicides 2,4-DB, MCPB and Bromoxynil at Wye in the 1950s: 448–450  alongside his other research into insecticides, plant growth regulators and fungicides.: 451–453  Wain's colleague Gerald Wibberley championed alternative priorities for the college with an early emphasis on land use and the environment.: 454 Following World War II and a 1947 merger with Swanley Horticultural College for women,: 444  Wye transformed itself from small agricultural college, providing local practical instruction, to university: 488  for a rapidly increasing number of national and international students.: 79  Successive phases of expansion developed the college's campus along Olantigh Road,: 6  Withersdane Hall the country's first post-war, purpose built university hall of residence,: 488  and accumulated an estate of nearly 1,000 acres (400 ha). However, after a difficult 2000 merger with Imperial College and controversial 2005 attempt to build 4,000 houses on its farmland, Imperial College at Wye closed in 2009.: 30, 45, 46, 50 As of 2010, the pioneering postgraduate distance learning programme created at Wye College continued within SOAS.: 49  Many of the college buildings have been redeveloped, though some are retained for community use or occasional public access.

Wye with Hinxhill is a hillside civil parish in the borough of Ashford northeast of Ashford, Kent itself, centred 3.7 miles (6.0 km) NNE of the town centre. The North Downs range of hills has a high escarpment on the east and west borders of the village, flanking a gap caused by the River Great Stour in the centre of the parish. The combined village has a relatively low population and a large geographical area. The civil parish council meets monthly to administer local government resources, funding, and planning community events and facilities. It contains the main village of Wye and the much smaller Hinxhill and had a combined population of 2,300 in 2001. By the time of the 2011 Census, the population had reduced to 2,282.

Wye railway station serves Wye in Kent, England, on the Ashford to Ramsgate line. The station and all trains that serve the station are operated by Southeastern.

Olantigh is an English house 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Wye in the civil parish of Wye with Hinxhill.The garden terraces and towered stable block were Grade II listed in 1989 and extend to 20 acres (8.1 ha), beside the Great Stour river. Bilting is a hamlet within the civil parish of Godmersham in the Ashford District of Kent, England. It stretches along the A28 at the foot of the Godmersham Downs, five miles northeast of Ashford town. At the 2011 Census, the population of the hamlet was included in the civil parish of Wye with Hinxhill Bilting Farm has been growing mushrooms since the 1930s, but now most of the farm has been converted to light industrial units and only a small number of speciality mushrooms are grown for local farmers' markets.

Brook is a small village and civil parish in the borough of Ashford in Kent, England, centred 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east-northeast of the town of Ashford.

Wye and Crundale Downs is a 358.3-hectare (885-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in a number of separate areas east of Ashford in Kent. It is a Special Area of Conservation and a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I. and it is part of Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Some areas are part of a National Nature Reserve, and another area is listed on the Geological Conservation Review.The most well-known part of the SSSI, usually known as "Wye Downs," is a stretch of chalk downland and woodland located on the North Downs near the village of Wye. The site is a national nature reserve (NNR) owned and managed by Natural England, and comprises a chalk escarpment dissected by several coombes, which were formed by frost weathering in the period following the last ice age. The most spectacular coombe is known as the Devil's Kneading Trough. The field containing Wye Crown is also within the NNR but is privately owned. Originally the Crown was carved in the chalk but is now made of white-painted stone gabions. Crundale is a valley situated a few kilometers north of Wye Downs, the main part of which is Winchcombe Down, another chalk escarpment, owned and managed by Natural England, although it is not publicly accessible except along the North Downs Way footpath.

Crundale is a mostly rural village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent in southeast England. The village covers a section of one of the dual escarpments of the North Downs at this point, about halfway between Ashford and Canterbury.

Boughton Aluph (pronounced Bawton Alluf) is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Ashford in Kent, England, and is about 5 miles (8 km) north of Ashford on the A251 road. There are two villages within the parish: Boughton Aluph itself, and Boughton Lees. Boughton Corner is a small hamlet within the parish, further east on the A28 road. The civil parish shares its council with the smaller locality of Eastwell. The place-name 'Boughton Aluph' is first attested as 'Boltune' in the Domesday Book of 1086, as 'Boctune' in the related Domesday Monachorum, and as 'Botun Alou' in the Close Rolls of 1237. 'Boughton' means 'town or settlement where beeches grew'; the village was held by one Alulf in 1211-12, the name being a variant of the Old German 'Adalulf'.

All Saints' Church is a 13th-century pilgrims' Grade I listed church in Boughton Aluph near Ashford, Kent. It is part of the Church of England.Built in the thirteenth century by a man named Adulphus to replace a Saxon church, it was enlarged in the 14th century by Sir Thomas Aldon, one of Edward III of England's courtiers. The building was restored in 1878. On 27 November 1957, the church was placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest, as a Grade I building. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was extensively renovated, including the cleansing and restoration of the windows in 2009. The church continues to be an active centre for worship, and is part of the United Wye Benefice. Every June, the building is used to host the Stour Music Festival.

The Stour Music Festival is a festival of early music held in the Stour valley, Kent, England, founded by countertenor Alfred Deller in 1962. The principal venue is a medieval church, All Saints' Church, Boughton Aluph. The building has good acoustics and was used for some of Deller's recordings. After Deller's death in 1979, his son Mark Deller continued the festival, and celebrated its 50th birthday alongside his father's centenary in 2012. In 2020 Robert Hollingworth, known for his work with I Fagiolini, took over as festival director.
