The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, (or The University of Tennessee; UT Knoxville; UTK; or colloquially Tennessee or UT) is a public land-grant research university in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. Founded in 1794, two years before Tennessee became the 16th state, it is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system, with ten undergraduate colleges and eleven graduate colleges. It hosts more than 30,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".UT's ties to nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory, established under UT President Andrew Holt and continued under the UT–Battelle partnership, allow for considerable research opportunities for faculty and students. Also affiliated with the university are the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, and the University of Tennessee Arboretum, which occupies 250 acres (100 ha) of nearby Oak Ridge and features hundreds of species of plants indigenous to the region. The university is a direct partner of the University of Tennessee Medical Center, which is one of two Level I trauma centers in East Tennessee. The University of Tennessee is the only university in the nation to have three presidential papers editing projects. The university holds collections of the papers of all three U.S. presidents from Tennessee—Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson. Nine of its alumni have been selected as Rhodes Scholars and one alumnus, James M. Buchanan, received the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics. UT is one of the oldest public universities in the United States and the oldest secular institution west of the Eastern Continental Divide.

The Stokely Athletic Center was an on-campus arena located at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States which was demolished in 2014. It was home to the men's and women's basketball teams from 1958 until the opening of Thompson-Boling Arena in 1987. In 2008, the Lady Vol volleyball team also left Stokely for Thompson–Boling Arena. It was located about a block from both the new arena and Neyland Stadium. The Stokley Center replaced Alumni Gymnasium, a 3,200-seat arena-auditorium built in 1931 which had hosted the SEC basketball tournament four times (1936, '37, '39, and '40).

Sherri Parker Lee Stadium is a softball stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the home field of the University of Tennessee Volunteers college softball team. The stadium opened in 2008 and holds 2,200 people. The Stadium is named after UT graduate Sherri Lee.In 2010, the then-Lady Volunteers ranked 16th in Division I college softball in attendance, averaging 710 per home game.In 2011, Sherri Parker Lee Stadium was recognized as the 2011 NFCA/Stabilizer Solutions Field of the Year Award Winner.On May 28, 2017, with a trip to the NCAA Women's College World Series on the line, a record crowd of 2,459 witnessed the Lady Vols lose to the Texas A&M Aggies 5–3 in the NCAA Super Regional deciding game. Unlike most stadiums in the SEC, fan access to the seating area is from a concourse at the bottom of the grandstand, not the top. This means that as fans enter and walk around the concourse, they block the view of the fans already seated. This problem is compounded by the handicap seating being on the field side of the concourse, obstructing the view of the fans sitting in the first few rows. Most SEC stadiums feature a concourse at the top and no separation between the first row and the field. This design also means that during television broadcasts, no fans are seen in the camera view.

Lindsey Nelson Stadium is a baseball stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the home field of the University of Tennessee Volunteers college baseball team. The stadium opened on February 23, 1993 and holds 4,387 people. The facility is named after Hall of Fame broadcaster Lindsey Nelson, who attended the university and founded the Vol Radio Network.From 2006 to 2019, the university undertook three major renovations to the stadium. Originally a natural grass playing surface, the 2019 renovation converted the field to Field Turf. Other renovations included premium seating, outfield wall improvements, and player facilities.In 2013, the Volunteers ranked 38th in among Division I baseball programs in attendance, averaging 1,846 per home game.

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is a museum located on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Built in 1963, exhibits focus on natural history, archaeology, anthropology, decorative arts, and local history. Long-term exhibits include: Repatriation of Archaeology and the Native Peoples of Tennessee The Decorative Experience — A collection of art from various times and cultures from around the world. Geology and Fossil History of East Tennessee — A collection of Tennessee fossils representing a comprehensive overview of geological history. Outside of the main building, the museum's most prominent and popular exhibit is a replica of an Edmontosaurus annectens, nicknamed "Monty" by the students at the University of Tennessee. Human Origins: Searching for Our Fossil Ancestors — A concise overview of the current scientific understanding regarding human evolution. Tennessee Freshwater Mussels — A collection displaying the incredible diversity of freshwater pearl mussels in Tennessee.In addition, the McClung Museum houses special exhibitions that temporarily showcase art or artifacts from other collections or institutions. The McClung Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

Regal Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. This stadium hosts the Tennessee Lady Volunteers Soccer Team in the NCAA, and One Knoxville SC in USL League One. The stadium is located on the University of Tennessee's campus, adjacent to Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, home of the Tennessee Lady Vols Softball Stadium. The stadium has a maximum capacity of 3,000 fans.The stadium's initial name was the Tennessee Soccer Complex, but was changed to its current name after a donation from Regal Cinemas in 2007.One Knoxville SC uses this stadium as a temporary venue before the new ground, hosted in Old City in Downtown Knoxville, opens in 2025. The new stadium will also host the Tennessee Smokies, a Double A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy is a nonpartisan institute on the campus of the University of Tennessee devoted to education and research concerning public policy and civic engagement. Through classes, public lectures, research, and student initiatives, the center aims to provide policy makers, citizens, scholars, and students with the information and skills necessary to work effectively within our political system and to serve our local, state, national, and global communities. By examining policy and politics through a nonpartisan lens, the Baker Center continues the groundbreaking work of its namesake, Senator Howard H. Baker Jr., who was nicknamed “The Great Conciliator” for his ability to cross party lines and encourage lawmakers to cooperate on key issues affecting the public good. In the spirit of Baker's work, the center offers a number of public lectures and programs on topics across the political spectrum, with a focus on its three main areas: Energy & Environment, Global Security and Leadership & Governance. To help promote policy-related scholarship, the Baker Center also is home to the Modern Political Archive featuring the papers of many Tennessee political leaders, including those of Senator Baker himself, Senator Fred Thompson, Ambassador Victor Ashe, and Governor Donald Sundquist.

Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is a 541-bed non-profit hospital in the Fort Sanders neighborhood of Knoxville, Tennessee. It is owned and operated by Covenant Health.

Thompson–Boling Arena at Food City Center is a multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. The arena opened in 1987. It is home to the Tennessee Volunteers (men) and Lady Vols (women) basketball teams. Since 2008, it has been home to the Lady Vols volleyball team. It is named after B. Ray Thompson and former university president Edward J. Boling. The basketball court is named "The Summitt" after the late Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt. It replaced the Stokely Athletic Center. The mammoth octagonal building lies just northwest of the Tennessee River, and just southwest of Neyland Stadium. As an echo of its neighbor and a tribute to the brick-and-mortar pattern atop Ayres Hall, the baselines of the court are painted in the familiar orange-and-white checkerboard pattern.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital is a private, independent, not-for-profit, 152-bed pediatric medical center in Knoxville, Tennessee. The hospital's primary service area includes 16 counties in East Tennessee, and its secondary service area includes counties in southwest Virginia, southeast Kentucky and western North Carolina. It is certified by the state as a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center (CRPC), Tennessee's highest level of certification for pediatric hospital care. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is a member of Child Health Corporation of America, Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, Children's Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, Tennessee Hospital Association and National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). The hospital and its affiliates, including numerous pediatric physician practices, employ about 1,800 individuals in full-time, part-time and as-needed positions.

The University of Tennessee College of Law is the law school of the University of Tennessee located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Founded in 1890, the College of Law is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools.

The Knoxville campaign was a series of American Civil War battles and maneuvers in East Tennessee during the fall of 1863 designed to secure control of the city of Knoxville and with it the railroad that linked the Confederacy east and west, and position the First Corps under Longstreet for return to the Army of Northern Virginia. Union Army forces under Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside occupied Knoxville, Tennessee, and Confederate States Army forces under Lt. Gen. James Longstreet were detached from Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee at Chattanooga to prevent Burnside's reinforcement of the besieged Federal forces there. Ultimately, Longstreet's Siege of Knoxville ended when Union Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman led elements of the Army of the Tennessee and other troops to Burnside's relief after Union troops had broken the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. Although Longstreet was one of Gen. Robert E. Lee's best corps commanders in the East in the Army of Northern Virginia, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to penetrate the Knoxville defenses and take the city.
