Begoña

The Begoña Bombing was an attack in the Basilica of Begoña in the Bilbao neighbourhood in Begoña on August 16, 1942, during the first period of the Spanish State (1936–1959), in which a hand grenade, thrown by the Falangist Juan José Domínguez Muñoz, caused seventy minor injuries. The act was interpreted as a failed attempt on the life of Carlist General José Enrique Varela, the Minister of the Army.

The Basilica of Begoña (or Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña in Spanish) is a basilica in Bilbao, in Spain, dedicated to the patron saint of Biscay, the Virgin Begoña. The current parish priest is Jesús Francisco de Garitaonandia.

Santutxu Fútbol Club is a Spanish football team based in Bilbao, in the autonomous community of Basque Country. Founded in 1918, it plays in Tercera División RFEF – Group 4, holding home matches at Estadio Maiona, which has a capacity of 4.000 spectators.Ibai Gómez, of Athletic Bilbao and Alavés, began his footballing career at Santutxu.

Santutxu is a station on lines 1 and 2 of the Bilbao metro. The station is located in the neighbourhood of Santutxu, in the district of Begoña in Bilbao. It opened on 5 July 1997.

Zurbaranbarri is a station on line 3 of the Bilbao metro. The station is also served by Euskotren Trena commuter and regional rail services. The station is located in the neighborhood of Zurbaran, part of the Uribarri district of Bilbao. It opened on 8 April 2017.

The Basque Museum, with the original name of the Basque Archaeological, Ethnographic and Historical Museum, is a museum in Bilbao, Spain. It opened its doors in 1921, occupying the ground floor of the baroque cloister of the old Colegio de San Andrés, which belonged to the Jesuits until their expulsion from Spain in 1767; the adjacent church of Santos Juanes, today a regular worship parish, is the church that once belonged to the Jesuit college. From the beginning it had the sponsorship of the Vizcaya Provincial Council and the Bilbao City Council. Little by little, the museum was occupying the annex buildings and increasing its collections, which include the archeology of Vizcaya and the ethnohistory of the Basque Country. The museum is currently undergoing a renovation process both at the museological and museum levels. Since 1962 it has been an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the category of National Historic-Artistic Monument.

Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo (Basque for 'Seven Streets' and Spanish for 'Old Town') is a railway station in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. It is located in the historical neighborhood of Casco Viejo, in the district of Ibaiondo. It links the Bilbao metro rapid transit services with the Euskotren Trena commuter rail network. It is the main railway hub for trips between the metropolitan underground network and the railway services to Eibar, Gernika, Bermeo and San Sebastián as well as the Txorierri valley. The original metro station opened on 11 November 1995, and on 8 April 2017 in its current form.

Deutsche Schule Bilbao (Spanish: Colegio Alemán Bilbao) is a German international school in Bilbao, Spain. It serves Kindergarten, Grundschule/Primaria, Sekundarstufe/Secundaria, and Oberstufe/Bachillerato. It was previously known as Deutsche Schule San Bonifacio.

Santutxu is a neighbourhood of the Spanish city of Bilbao. It belongs to the 4th urban district, named Begoña. It is a popular residential neighbourhood which has a significant number of small businesses and has received some waves of immigration in the last years, particularly Romanians. The Begoña district consists of three neighbourhoods: Santutxu, Begoña and Bolueta. According to research on population density, and data from the Bilbao City Council, Santutxu has the third most densely populated sq/km in Europe, with about 41.378 residents per sq/km, when considering districts of a certain size coming in third place after L'Hospitalet de Llobregat in Greater Barcelona and La Goutte d’or in Paris, neighbourhoods which have slightly more than 50.000 residents per sq/km. However, there is a popular myth among locals that Santutxu is the most densely populated neighbourhood in Europe.

The Plaza Nueva or Plaza Barria (New Square) of Bilbao is a monumental square of Neoclassical style built in 1821. Its name comes from the previously existing Plaza Vieja or Old Square in the place where the Ribera Market was built. The square is enclosed by arcaded buildings and accessed by arches known as cuevas (caves). The main building was the site of the Biscay government, until a new palace was built in 1890. The place is now the site of Euskaltzaindia, the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. The arches host many traditional taverns and restaurants, some of the most ancient and typical of the city, and some gift and souvenir shops. Each Sunday, the square provides space for a traditional flea market where ancient books, coins, stamps, birds and flowers are sold. The square is used often for folk demonstrations, festivals and concerts. The Grand Slam Masters Final, one of the strongest chess tournaments in the world, was held in a glass structure on Plaza Nueva in 2008 and 2009. Since 2008, the City Council acts as a free ISP providing free Internet access via Wi-Fi in the square.

Atxuri is a neighborhood of Bilbao. It was originally a suburb south of the old walled town. Modernly it stands between this neighborhood and those of Solokoetxe, Santutxu and the estuary of Bilbao. Administratively, it belongs to the 5th district of the city. It hosts Bilbao-Atxuri Station, the main EuskoTren railway station, that links Bilbao with San Sebastián and Bermeo.

Ibaiondo is the fifth district of the city of Bilbao (Biscay), in the Spanish Basque Country. Ibaiondo is a recently used name that means 'beside the river' in Basque. It is divided into the neighbourhoods of Atxuri, Bilbo Zarra, Casco Viejo, Iturralde, Abusu, San Adrián, San Francisco, Solokoetxe, Miribilla and Zabala.The original walled city, the Casco Viejo, is located in this district, including the oldest buildings of the city like the Santiago Cathedral and Saint Anton Church, both from the 15th century. Today the modern district includes both the oldest and the newest neighbourhood, Miribilla, which was started in 1999 and completed two years after.It is the most extensive district of Bilbao, with an area of 9.65 km² (25% of the municipality) but the urban area has an area of only 2.45 km², the rest of the district is part of mount Pagasarri. It is also the city's most populated district, with 61,184 inhabitants in 2016.
