Battle of Kiev (January 1919)

The Second Battle of Kiev was a part of a much wider Soviet offensive in Ukraine known as the Battle of the Dnieper involving three strategic operations by the Soviet Red Army and one operational counterattack by the Wehrmacht, which took place between 3 November and 22 December 1943. Following the Battle of Kursk, the Red Army launched the Belgorod-Kharkov Offensive Operation, pushing Erich von Manstein's Army Group South back towards the Dnieper River. Stavka, the Soviet high command, ordered the Central Front and the Voronezh Front to force crossings of the Dnieper. When this was unsuccessful in October, the effort was handed over to the 1st Ukrainian Front, with some support from the 2nd Ukrainian Front. The 1st Ukrainian Front, commanded by Nikolai Vatutin, was able to secure bridgeheads north and south of Kiev.

The Battle of Kiev of December 1919 was the third of three battles fought that year in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine during the Russian Civil War. The Kiev operation (December 10–16, 1919) was an offensive operation of the 12th Army under command of Sergei Mezheninov against some 9,000 White Guard troops under command of Abram Dragomirov. The 58th Infantry Division of the 12th Army was advancing to Kiev from the west, and the 44th Infantry Division from the east. On December 10, the 44th Infantry Division of the 12th Army withdrew to the Dnieper River. On the night of 15 to 16 December, with the assistance of local fisherman PK Alekseenko (Alekseyev), the 44th Infantry Division under command of Ivan Naumovich Dubovoy forced the Dnieper, which was just starting to freeze. Early on the morning of December 16, the Reds unexpectedly attacked the White's positions from the rear and occupied the bridges. After a twelve-hour battle, the Whites retreated. On the same day, the 58th Infantry Division under command of Ivan Fedko entered the city.

The battle of Kyiv was part of the Kyiv offensive in the Russian invasion of Ukraine for control of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, and surrounding districts. The combatants were elements of the Russian Armed Forces and Ukrainian Armed Forces. The battle lasted from 25 February 2022 to 2 April 2022 and ended with the withdrawal of Russian forces. Initially, Russian forces captured key areas to the north and west of Kyiv, leading to international prediction of the city's imminent fall. However, stiff Ukrainian resistance sapped Russian momentum. Poor Russian logistics and tactical decisions helped the defenders to thwart efforts at encirclement, and, after a month of protracted fighting, Ukrainian forces began counterattacking. Following the successful Ukrainian counterattacks in late March, Russia began withdrawing its forces from the Kyiv area on 29 March. Four days later, the Ukrainian authorities declared that Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv Oblast were again under Ukrainian control.

Lysa Hora (Ukrainian: Лиса Гора); ("Bald Mountain" meaning barren mountain, featureless mountain) is a large wooded hill in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, near the confluence of the Dnipro and Lybid' rivers. The hill is now a nature reserve included in the Kyiv Fortress museum. The mount supposedly takes its name from the fact that its top was (some slopes of the hill are still) not covered by trees. The mount is located in the Holosiiv Municipal District of Kyiv. According to the Slavic legends, the Lysa Hora hill is the largest and most famous location of the mystical "bald mountain" — a traditional site of the witch gatherings. Particularly, it is asserted in the works of the Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol.

Holosiivska Street (Ukrainian: Голосіївська вулиця) is a street located in Holosiivskyi District of Kyiv, Ukraine. It runs from Nauky Avenue to Holosiivska Square and Holosiivskyi National Nature Park, and is named for the latter.Holosiivska Street was built in the 19th century. It continued into the forest until the mid of 20th century. In 1970s the street was reconstructed.During Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Battle of Kyiv, Holosiivska street suffered air strikes.

The Embassy of Algeria in Kyiv is the diplomatic mission of Algeria in Ukraine, and its accreditation in Moldova.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Інститут фізики Національної академії наук України) founded in 1926 is the oldest research institution of physical science within the academy. Being on the path of both infrastructure development and research diversification for more than 80 years, the institute has eventually originated five more specialized research institutions. Currently, the institute employs more than 300 researchers (together with two full members and eight corresponding members of the NASU) and around 200 peoples of supporting personnel. It has more than 20 scientific units (including the state-of-the-art Femtosecond Laser Complex) which are grouped around four research programs Traditionally, the institute is focused on fundamental research. At the same time, applied research on cryogenics, LC displays, laser systems, pyroelectric detectors, biophysics and plasma technologies strengthen the institute's activities. The IOP is consistently ranked at the top of national academic institutions ranking. Besides, international reputation of IOP is growing constantly as prominent scientists from the Institute expand their activity to leading foreign research centers and universities.

Zvirynetska (Ukrainian: Звіринецька) is a station of Kyiv Metro's Syretsko-Pecherska Line. It is situated between Pecherska and Vydubychi stations. This station was opened on 30 December 1991. Until May 2023 the station was named Druzhby Narodiv or Friendship of Peoples (Ukrainian: Дружби Народів, , named after the former name of Mikhnovsky Boulevard, which is located above the station) Druzhby Narodiv station was designed by architects Alyoshkin and Krushynskiy. It is a deep-level station. The station is connected by escalators with a passenger tunnel situated under Druzhby Narodiv boulevard. The station station operates from 05:43 to 00:12. On Friday 13 January 2023 the Kyiv City Council announced Druzhby Narodiv metro station would be renamed. In a poll organised by them Kyiv residents cast more than 100,000 votes for the renaming of seven city objects, including this station and Ploshcha Lva Tolstoho. In a May 2022 online poll (with 170,000 respondents) voters chose to rename the station Botanical (Ukrainian: Ботанічна) — after the nearby Hryshko National Botanical Garden — in a poll taken during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine; other choices included European and Red Viburnum. The Druzhby Narodiv boulevard itself was renamed to Mykola Mikhnovsky boulevard on 8 December 2022. In the January 2023 poll the majority of votes went to the name Zvirynets (Ukrainian: Звіринець), a historical neighbourhood inside Pecherskyi District where the metro station is situated in. On 18 May 2023 the Kyiv City Council renamed the station to Zvirynetska.

Lybidska (Ukrainian: Либідська, ) is the 27th station of the Kyiv Metro system that serves the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. The station was opened as part of the Obolonsko–Teremkivska Line on 30 December 1984, located in between the Palats "Ukrayina" and Demiivska stations. The station provides passenger access to Lybdiska Square, under which it is located. It served as the line's southern terminus for 26 years until 2010, when the line was extended to Vasylkivska. After the fall of Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the station was renamed "Lybidska" after a nearby river—Lybid, on 2 February 1993.In 2011, the station has been listed as a "newly discovered object of cultural heritage," and monuments of architecture, town planning, and art. In May 2016, it was decided that the Soviet decorative piece at the end of the central hall would be removed to be displayed at a museum in accordance with the 2015 decommunization laws.As of 2011, Lybidska has a daily ridership of 28,500, and is operational every day from 05:48 to 00:00.

Vydubychi (Ukrainian: Видубичі, ) is a station of Kyiv Metro's Syretsko-Pecherska Line. It is situated between Druzhby Narodiv and Slavutych stations. This station was opened on 30 December 1991. Vydubychi station was designed by architects T. Tselikovska. The station has 2 entrances. One of them is situated in underground passage under the crossing of Saperno-Slobidska street and Naddniprianske shose. Another is situated near the bus station Vydubychi, the Vydubychi railway station of the Kyiv Urban Electric Train and the Vydubychi-Trypilski rail station. The second entrance was built in 2001. Vydubychi station works from 05:42 to 00:15.

Demiivka (Ukrainian: Деміївка) is a neighborhood located in the Holosiiv Raion (district) of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is located towards the southern part of the city, in between the city's neighborhoods Chorna Hora, Shyrma, and Holosiiv National Park. Through the neighborhood flows Lybid River and the unofficial name of the neighborhood Nyzhnia Lybid (Lower Lybid). At its eastern edge is located a ridgeline of Kyiv Hills consisting of Lysa Hora, Chorna Hora, and Bahrynova Hora, past which is located Dnipro. Until the 19th century the area was outside of the Kyiv city and was known as Lybidska zemlya (land of Lybid) which had couple of small villages (sloboda) Verkhnyolybidske and Nyzhnyolybidske. The current name the place assumed sometime in the second half of the 19th century as Demiivka of Khotiv volost. In 1909 the Kyiv entrepreneur David Margolin opened in Demiivka a private city tramway company. In 1918 it was included into Kyiv and in 1920s through 1960s carried the name of Stalinka. Under such name, the neighborhood is mentioned in the work of Ukrainian writer Oles Ulianenko, "Stalinka", which received the junior Shevchenko National Prize (existed in 1997–1999). Most of its older building were demolished already in 1970s.The Kyiv Central Bus Station and Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine are located in the neighborhood. Demiivka is served by a Holosiivska and Demiivska metro stations of the Kyiv Metro's Obolonsko–Teremkivska line. The Kyiv Metro in the area was opened in 2010. Beside Kyiv underground rail transport, there is also a regular train station Kyiv-Demiivskyi. Through the neighborhood passes the European route E95. The Demiivska Square is an important intersection through which passes the E95 route and some major streets that lead to the Pivdennyi Bridge (Southern bridge, part of the European route E40). Across from the National Library is located a building of the Holosiivskyi District State Administration. The neighbor is also home to number of older Kyiv industries among which are Kyiv Brewing Factory #1 (Soviet name for former Carl Schultz Brewery), Kyiv Roshen Factory (former Demiivka Sugar Factory), Factory "Kyivhuma" (Kyiv Rubber), Kyiv Artillery Shells Factory, and others.
