Lille-Flandres station

The Lille Braderie (French: Braderie de Lille) is a braderie, or annual street market/flea market, that takes place on the weekend of the first Sunday of September in Lille, France, in the northern Hauts-de-France region. Its dates back to the 12th century, welcoming nearly three million visitors each year. The Braderie de Lille is one of the largest gatherings in France and the largest flea market in Europe. The braderie has a 100km of aisles for 10,000 exhibitors.This event is surrounded by concerts, a fun fair, a half-marathon that precedes it, increased catering in the city (various mobile stands added to the local restaurants, Moules-frites (the traditional dish), and regional beers). It is an opportunity for many (especially for the students of Lille) to party all night in the city and its many bars. Resulting in slowly growing heaps of restaurant mussels shells. The 2016 market was cancelled by the mayor Martine Aubry due to security fears because of recent terrorism in France.

ESC Lille is a French business school founded in 1892. It has two campuses, one in Lille and one in Paris. ESC Lille is EQUIS accredited by the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Education) and the Conference Of The Grandes Ecoles. In 2005, it was the first European business school to be accredited by Project Management Institute’s Global Accreditation Center for Project Management (GACPM), and is still the only PMI-accredited business school in France. In July 2009 the union of Ceram Business School and ESC Lille was announced. It will create the largest French business school in terms of student numbers. The new school, named Skema Business School (School of Knowledge Economy and MAnagement), span three sites in France in Lille, Paris and Sophia Antipolis near Nice and three sites: in China (Suzhou) United States (Raleigh, NC) and Brazil (Belo Orizonte). In May 2019 SKEMA Business School announced the opening of a new site in Cape Town (South Africa) and the possibility to enter in Russia and India.

The Église Saint-Maurice is a church on Rue Pierre-Mauroy, in the historic centre of Lille, northern France. Its construction began at the end of the 14th century and completed at the end of the 19th century, and it was extended over more than four centuries. A hall church in the Gothic style, it was made a monument historique in 1914.

Euralille is an urban quarter in the centre of Lille, France. Conceived as a major European business district in the 1980s, it is strategically located at the intersection of the high-speed railway lines linking Paris, Brussels, and London, and incorporates the Gare de Lille Europe and Gare de Lille Flandres railway stations. The master plan was commissioned in 1988 to the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) led by Rem Koolhaas.

The Parc Henri Matisse is a public park and gardens in the Euralille district of Lille, adjacent to Lille-Europe station. The park was designed by Gilles Clément, after he opposed plans to construct a multi-purpose urban building in this location. A principal feature is a 3,500 sqm 7m high plinth in the centre named Derborence Island. It used spoil from constructing the station, and was laid out in the same shape as Antipodes Island. The area is monitored every few years to check the diversity of wildlife, and see if certain plant species can survive or thrive there.

The siege of Lille or Lille pocket (28–31 May 1940) took place during the Battle of France in the Second World War. The siege of the French IV Corps and V Corps (about 40,000 men) of the First Army (General René Prioux) was conducted by four German infantry divisions supported by three panzer divisions. The III Corps of the First Army had managed to retreat to the Lys river with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) divisions nearby. The two surrounded French corps resisted German attacks until forced to surrender at midnight on 31 May/1 June. The defence of the Lille Pocket enabled more Allied troops to retreat into the Dunkirk perimeter and take part in the Battle of Dunkirk.

The University of Lille (French: Université de Lille, abbreviated as ULille, UDL or univ-lille) is a French public research university based in Lille, Hauts-de-France. It has its origins in the University of Douai (1559), and resulted from the merger of three universities – Lille 1 University of Science and Technology, Lille 2 University of Health and Law, and Charles de Gaulle University – Lille III in 2018. With more than 74,000 students, it is one of the largest universities in France and one of the largest French-speaking universities in the world. Since 2017, the university has been funded as one of the French universities of excellence. It benefits from an endowment of 500 million euros to accelerate its strategy in education, research, international development and outreach. With 66 research labs, 350 PhD theses supported per year and 3,000 scientific publications each year, it is well represented in the research community; it collaborates with many organizations (Pasteur Institute of Lille, CHU Lille University Hospital, CNRS, INSERM, INRA, INRIA etc.) and schools (École Centrale de Lille, École des Mines-Télécom de Lille-Douai (IMT Lille Douai), Sciences Po Lille etc.). Until 2019, the university was the main component of the Community of Universities and Institutions (COMUE) Lille Nord de France. It still operates the European Doctoral College, which federates universities and other higher learning institutes in the Hauts-de-France region.

Lille-Europe station (French: Gare de Lille-Europe) is a SNCF railway station in Lille, France, on the LGV Nord high-speed railway. The station is primarily used for international Eurostar and long-distance SNCF TGV services, although some high-speed regional trains also call at the station. The station was built in 1993 to be used as a through station for trains between the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as well as French TGV services, except those coming from Paris which normally terminate at Lille-Flandres. There is a 400 m (1,300 ft) walking distance between the two stations, which are also adjacent stops on the Lille Metro.

The Opéra de Lille is a neo-classical opera house, built from 1907 to 1913 and officially inaugurated in 1923. Closed for renovation in 1998 it reopened in 2003 for Lille 2004. The Opéra de Lille is a member of the European Network for Opera, Music and Dance Education (RESEO), and of Opera Europa. It is served by the metro stations Gare Lille-Flandres and Rihour.

Tour de Lille (previously known as Tour du Crédit-Lyonnais between 1995–2006) is an office skyscraper in Euralille, the business district of the Lille metropolitan area. Designed by Christian de Portzamparc, this emblematic tower of the city of Lille is also called "the ski boot", "the flipper" or even "the L".116 m high, with an area of 18,135 m2, it is the fifth tallest tower outside of Île-de-France behind the Tour Incity in Lyon, the Tour Part-Dieu in Lyon, the Tour CMA-CGM in Marseille and the Tour Bretagne in Nantes. The Tour de Lille overlooks the Lille-Europe station.

The Hôtel de ville de Lille (English: Lille Town Hall) is a municipal building in Lille, France. Built between 1924 and 1932 in Art Deco style of Flemish neo-Renaissance inspiration, it is listed as a Monument historique since May 2002. Its belfry is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2005 along with many other Belfries of Belgium and France in recognition of its architecture and importance in the history of municipal power in Europe. The latter should not be confused with the belfry of Lille's Chamber of Commerce, also emblematic of the city. The Town Hall is located on the Place Roger Salengro, next to the Porte de Paris, in the eastern part of the city centre. This site is served by the Mairie de Lille metro station on line 2 of the Lille Metro.

Tour Euralille is an office skyscraper in Euralille, the business district of the Lille metropolitan area. Designed by Jean-Claude Burdèse and Claude Vasconi, 110 m high, it is the second tallest tower in Lille after the Tour de Lille. The Tour Euralille and its atrium span the Lille-Europe station, which represented a real technical challenge during its construction. The mixed structure of the tower, produced by the company Rabot Dutilleul Construction, consists of a reinforced concrete ladder beam which is supported by a metal frame supporting the suspended floors.
