Utsunomiya Castle

The Battle of Utsunomiya Castle (宇都宮城の戦い, Utsunomiyajō no tatakai) took place between pro-imperial and Tokugawa shogunate forces during the Boshin War in Japan in May 1868. It occurred as the troops of the Tokugawa shogunate were retreating north towards Nikkō and Aizu.

Utsunomiya (宇都宮市, Utsunomiya-shi, [ɯᵝt͡sɯ̃ᵝno̞mija̠] ) is the capital and largest city of Tochigi Prefecture in the northern Kantō region of Japan. As of 1 July 2023, the city had an estimated population of 513,584, and a population density of 1,232 persons per square kilometre (3,190/sq mi). The total area of the city is 416.85 km2 (160.95 sq mi). Utsunomiya is famous for its gyoza (pan fried dumplings). There are more than two hundred gyoza restaurants in Utsunomiya.Greater Utsunomiya (ja:宇都宮都市圏, Utsunomiya Toshi-ken) had a population of 888,005 in the 2000 census. The nearby city of Oyama is included in Greater Tokyo, but Greater Utsunomiya is not, despite the two areas amalgamating somewhat. It is the 10th most populated city in the Kantō region.

The 1990 UCI Road World Championships took place in Utsunomiya, Japan, from September 1 to September 2, 1990.

Utsunomiya Futarayama Jinja (宇都宮二荒山神社) is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Along with the Futarasan Shrine in Nikkō, it is one of the two shrines claiming the title of ichinomiya of former Shimotsuke Province. The shrine's main festival is held annually on October 21. It is located on the summit of Mt. Myōjin (Usugamine; elevation, 135 meters) in the center of Utsunomiya city.

Utsunomiya Station (宇都宮駅, Utsunomiya-eki) is a railway station in the city of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The station also is a freight depot for the Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight). Utsunomiya Station East is the current terminus of the Utsunomiya Light Rail line located in front of the East Exit, while Tōbu-Utsunomiya Station is located 1.6 km west of this station.

Utsunomiya Velodrome (宇都宮競輪場, Utsunomiya Keirinjyō) is a velodrome located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi that conducts pari-mutuel Keirin racing - one of Japan's four authorized "Public Sports" (公営競技, kōei kyōgi) where gambling is permitted. Nicknamed "Kaze no Wonderland" (風のワンダーランド, Kaze no Uondarando, lit. The Wonderland of Wind), its Keirin identification number for betting purposes is 24# (24 sharp). Utsunomiya's oval is 500 meters in circumference. A typical keirin race of 2,025 meters consists of four laps around the course. Utsunomiya Velodrome is the home track of Yūichirō Kamiyama, a 21-year Keirin veteran and one of the sport's best competitors with 16 GI (Grade 1) victories in his career.

Utsunomiya Bunka Kaikan is a concert hall located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It features a 2,000-seat great hall and a 500-seat small hall. It opened in 1979. Whitesnake performed at Utsunomiya Bunka Kaikan during their 1983 Japanese tour.

Ekihigashi Park Station (駅東公園前停留場, Eki-Higashi kōen mae Teiryūjō) is a station serving the Utsunomiya Light Rail, located in Utsunomiya. The station number is 03. Tochigi bank has purchased the right to choose the secondary name for the station, and the station has the secondary name Tochigi Bank Utsunomiya-Higashi branch mae (栃木銀行 宇都宮東支店前, Tochigi Ginkō Utsunomiya-Higashi Shiten mae).

Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts (栃木県立美術館, Tochigi Kenritsu Bijutsukan) opened in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, in 1972. The collection includes works by Hamada Shōji, Takahashi Yuichi, Constable, Corot, Gainsborough, Monet, and Turner, and special exhibitions are also mounted.
