Salbertrand railway station

Salbertrand is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, about 60 km west of Turin. At 31 December 2004 it had a population of 522 and an area of 40.9 km2. It has a railway station on the Turin-Modane railway. Salbertrand borders the following municipalities: Exilles, Oulx and Pragelato.

The Exilles Fort (pronounced : egzil - Italian: Forte di Exilles, French: Fort d'Exilles) is a fortified complex in the Susa Valley, Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, northern Italy. Together with the nearby Fort of Fenestrelle and the Forte Albertino (at Vinadio, in the province of Cuneo) it was part of the defensive line between the House of Savoy lands (later of the Kingdom of Italy) and France: both these states held it in different phases depending on the outcome of the various wars. It is located on a spur commanding one of the narrowest sections of the Susa Valley, along the main road connecting Turin to France.

The Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park (Italian: Parco naturale del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand) is a nature reserve in Piedmont, Italy. Established in 1980, it protects the Site of Community Importance of the Great Woods of Salbertrand (Gran Bosco di Salbertrand), in the Val Susa, south of the Dora Riparia, between 1,000 and 2,700 meters above sea level. The woods, which cover an area of about eight hundred acres, consist of a mix of silver firs and Norway spruces, rarely found in the Western Alps.About 70% of the park's territory consists of woods, the remaining 30% of pastures and grasslands. Since 2009 the park, which covers the territory of seven municipalities in the Province of Turin, has been managed by the Ente di gestione delle aree protette delle Alpi Cozie, along with the Val Troncea, Lakes of Avigliana and Orsiera-Rocciavrè natural parks and the natural reserves of the gorges of Foresto and Chianocco.The park's flora consists of over six hundred species of plants, including silver firs, larches, European spruces, stone pines and Scotch pines. The fauna consists of 21 species of mammals, including red deer, roe deer, chamoises, wild boars, marmots, foxes, squirrels, stoats and wolves, and 70 species of birds, including golden eagles, sparrowhawks, Eurasian goshawks, common buzzards, rock partridges and black grouses.

The Dora di Bardonecchia is a short tributary of the Dora Riparia river, lying entirely within the upper Susa Valley in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, Italy.

The Battle of Assietta was a significant engagement of the War of the Austrian Succession and pitted a numerically superior French force of 25,000 men under the command of Louis Fouquet, Chevalier de Belle-Isle against a Sardinian army of 15,000 men led by Giovanni Bricherasio. The French were soundly defeated and their commander, Belle-Isle, killed during the course of the battle. The siege was part of the Italian campaign of the War of the Austrian Succession, in which Habsburgs and Bourbons contested for domination over Northern Italy and the various Italian states. The Kingdom of Sardinia joined the war on the side of the Pragmatic Allies in 1742 and rallied itself to Maria Theresa's cause. There also were concerns about growing French influence in its territories. The war in Italy had already been going on for seven years, and the Sardinian army had already suffered several defeats in the field, leading to them opting for a more defensive approach. The French led several expeditions in Italy during the war, combining their forces with the Spanish Bourbons to accomplish their political aims.By 1747, the war was coming to an end, but the French were still interested in acquiring more influence in Italy, and so dispatched an army under the command of Belle-Isle to capture Colle dell'Assietta from the Sardinians. The French army organised into thirty-two battalions, encountered fortified Sardinian positions at the Susa Valley, and launched wave after wave of fruitless assaults on their fortifications. The French divided their forces into four columns and launched several assaults personally led by Belle-Isle. They were all repulsed with heavy casualties inflicted, and Belle-Isle himself was killed, whereupon a retreat was ordered. The Sardinians suffered only light casualties, while the French had over a fifth of their force killed or wounded. The Sardinian victory proved to be the last major battle in the Italian campaign of the war.

Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere (Italian: Stazione di Oulx) is a railway station in the Oulx comune (municipality) in the Italian region of Piedmont. The station is located on the Turin-Modane railway. The train services are operated by Trenitalia and SNCF.

Stadio del Trampolino is a ski jumping hill located in Pragelato, Italy. During the 2006 Winter Olympics, it hosted the ski jumping and the ski jumping part of the Nordic combined events. It also hosted FIS Ski Jumping World Cup events in the 2004–05 and 2008–09 seasons.

The Via Lattea (italian for Milky Way) is a winter sports area in the Italian and French Alps, straddling the French-Italian border at Claviere/Montgenèvre. Located some 70 km (44 miles) west of Turin, it comprises the five Piedmontese resorts of Claviere (1760m), Sansicario (1700m), Sauze d'Oulx (1509m), Pragelato (1524m) and Sestriere (2035m) and additionally the French resort Montgenèvre (1860m). Altogether there are more than 400 km (250 miles) of skiable pistes, 120 of them with artificial snow, and 70 lifts. The lowest lift begins at 1370m in the service village of Cesana Torinese; the highest point is Mont Motta in the Sestriere ski area, at 2800m. Claviere and Montgenèvre are connected by skiing and ski lifts. The 2006 Winter Olympics had the alpine ski events in the Via Lattea , on Sestriere and Sansicario slopes and most other snow events and bobsleigh nearby.

Colle Sestriere, Col de Sestriere, is a mountain pass in the Cottian Alps. It is occupied by the town of Sestriere in the Province of Turin, Italy. It is 17 km (11 mi) from the French border. Its name derives from Latin: ad petram sistrariam, that is at sixty Roman miles from Turin. It is a famous starting and arrival point in the Tour de France (7 appearances, 1952–1999) and the Giro d'Italia (4 appearances, 1991–1911). In 1952, Fausto Coppi was the first to record a stage win at Sestriere, while Charly Gaul is credited with the first crossing in 1956. Notably, it was the scene of a definitive moment in Lance Armstrong's career when he rode away from the field in a breakaway uphill finish to take the stage in the 1999 Tour de France, which was the first of his seven championships in that race. He has since been stripped of the titles.

The Alpes Cottiae (Latin pronunciation: [ˈaɫpeːs ˈkɔttɪ.ae̯]; English: 'Cottian Alps') were a small province of the Roman Empire founded in 63 AD by Emperor Nero. It was one of the three provinces straddling the Alps between modern France and Italy, along with the Alpes Graiae et Poeninae and Alpes Maritimae. The capital of the province was Segusio (modern Susa, Piedmont). Other important settlements were located at Eburodunum and Brigantio (Briançon). Named after the 1st-century BC ruler of the region, Marcus Julius Cottius, the toponym survives today in the Cottian Alps.

It is situated in Val Susa, 17 km (11 mi) from the French border. Its name derives from Latin: ad petram sistrariam, that is at sixty Roman miles from Turin.
