Historically, the boundaries of Whitton were the north-western part of Twickenham manor, bounded internally by the sections of the River Crane and the Duke of Northumberland's River.The main focus of Whitton is its High Street, which is one of the best-preserved 1930s high streets in London. The most common type of housing in the area is 1930s detached and semi-detached housing. Whitton lies on the A316 road, which leads to the M3 motorway, and has a railway station on the line from London Waterloo to Windsor. As a mainly residential area in outer London, many residents commute to Central London. Education, retail, transport and catering businesses are also significant local employers.

The church's founder was Lady Amelia Shaw, second wife of Sir Robert Shaw, whose schoolroom (the site of the current church hall) was registered for public worship in 1835. The first chapel was built in 1844 and the premises were significantly rebuilt and enlarged in 1866.Services are held on Sundays at 10.30am and 6pm.

Whitton railway station is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in southwest London, within Travelcard Zone 5. It is 12 miles 43 chains (20.2 km) down the line from London Waterloo. The station and all trains serving it are operated by South Western Railway. The station was extensively refurbished and its main buildings replaced 2015–2016. The footbridge was replaced so as to incorporate optional lifts to the platforms. Whitton station has a ticket office above the up (London-bound) platform containing a coffee shop, a taxi office, ticket machines and a disabled toilet. The station, to allow periods of no staff, lacks ticket barriers. The operator has had call at the station on most weekdays since 2014 air-conditioned, ten-coach trains. The platforms were extended away from the building and footbridge in February 2012. Whitton is the closest station to the Twickenham Stoop rugby union stadium, home of Harlequins and is about 700 metres further by pavement from Twickenham Stadium (compared to Twickenham railway station).

Fulwell is a neighbourhood of outer South West London in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It straddles the west of the generally firmer ("ancient" parish and urban district) borders of Twickenham and Teddington, reinforced as local postcode districts. The name is first known in documents of the fifteenth century. It may be from a reliably full well or a corruption of foul well. Until 1965 Fulwell was in the historic County of Middlesex. The area has no postal limits, but references survive as part of ward name, Fulwell and Hampton Hill, Fulwell railway station, Fulwell Golf Course, Fulwell bus garage, Fulwell Park Avenue and Fulwell Road. Fulwell is often used by residents to state where they live.In 2009, a proposal to remove the name from the local councillors' electoral district (ward) name was rejected.Fulwell has an Anglican parish church, St Michael's, which, after a 15-year closure, was reopened for worship in 2014 and regained parish status in 2019.
