Abercynon North railway station was one of two railway stations - North and South - serving the village of Abercynon in the Cynon Valley, Wales. It was located on the Aberdare branch of the Merthyr Line 15¼ miles (24 km) north of Cardiff Central. Passenger services were provided by Arriva Trains Wales.

Pentwyn Deintyr is a small Welsh community between Quakers Yard and Nelson, Caerphilly. The name Pentwyn Deintyr (= pen twyn (y) deintyr, top of the hill of the tenterhooks) is a link with the early woollen industry in the district. The name originates where tenterhooks were used in the process of stretching the wool.

Abercynon (Welsh pronunciation: [abɛrˈkənɔn]), is both a village and a community (and electoral ward) in the Cynon Valley within the unitary authority of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. The community comprises the village and the districts of Carnetown and Grovers Field to the south, Navigation Park to the east, and Glancynon (or Aber-taf) to the north. The population of Abercynon was recorded as 6,428 in the 2001 Census, decreasing to 6,390 at the 2011 Census, despite more than a hundred additional households built over this period (from 2,582 in 2011 to 2,694 by 2011). The electoral ward of Abercynon includes both the community of Abercynon, but also takes into account the nearby villages of Pontcynon, Ynysboeth and Tyntetown further north. Abercynon is approximately 16 miles (26 km) north of Cardiff and approximately 40 miles (64 km) from Swansea. The rivers Taff and Cynon converge at Watersmeet near Martin's Terrace. Abercynon used to have many churches, chapels and pubs. There are now only four public houses left - The Thorn Hotel, The Navigation, The Top Club and the Carne Park Hotel. The only churches still left are St. Donat's Church in Wales, its daughter church, St. Gwynno's, St. Thomas' Roman Catholic Church and the Methodist church in Martin's Lane.

Carnetown (or 'Carne') is a district of Abercynon, within the Cynon Valley in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Carnetown is located to the south and west of Abercynon, and comprises Carnetown itself to the west, and the large modern housing estate of 'Grovers Field' to the south. The area is home to 'Carnetown Primary School', 'St. Donat's Church' (built in 1898), 'Carne Park Hotel' and various shops/businesses, and previously had its own post office until 2005.

Abercynon Colliery was a coal mine located in Abercynon, South Wales. Opened in 1889, it closed in 1988.

Pontcynon is a small village of around 200 households within the Cynon Valley in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, near Abercynon. Most of the village consists of terraced housing fronting the B4275 Abercynon Road; but also consists of the adjoining streets of Pontcynon Terrace, Vale View and Cemetery Road.

Incline Top railway station, later Top of the Incline was a short-lived early railway station on the Taff Vale Railway in South Wales, located at Penlocks, Treharris. The station was on the original section of the line between Abercynon and Quakers Yard, which was to the left of the present-day line. The eponymous Incline was a steep gradient of 1 in 22, and trains required a stationary winding engine (installed by Brunel) to surmount it. The station was accessible only by a steep flight of steps leading to the bottom of a deep cutting in the incline. The station's life was brief and it closed after 12 years. The original line was eventually abandoned completely and replaced in 1864.After the station closed, it was left to decay until being largely destroyed by a violent cyclone on 27 October 1913, a storm, which caused considerable damage across the district, including destroying the spire of St. Mary's Church, Glyntaff. The site of the station is now overgrown with trees and is not easily noticeable.

Quakers Yard railway station serves the village of Edwardsville in the community of Treharris, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It is located on the Merthyr Tydfil branch of the Merthyr Line. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales.

The A4054 is an A Road connecting Llandaff, Cardiff with Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and mostly follows the former route of the A470.
