The cooperative Royal Avebe U.A. (abbreviation of Aardappelmeel Verkoop Bureau) is an international Dutch starch manufacturer located in the north of the Netherlands and produces starch products based on potato starch and potato protein for use in food, animal feed, paper, construction, textiles and adhesives. About 2240 farmers are members of Avebe. The cooperation is divided into six districts (two in Germany and four in the Netherlands). Avebe starch factories in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden processes about 3 million tons in potatoes.

Veenkoloniaal Museum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈveːnkoːloːniˌaːl myˈzeːʏm]; English: Peat-colonial Museum) is a regional museum in the village of Veendam in the Netherlands. The museum shows not only the history of the peat district in Groningen. Situated in a monumental building dating from 1911 the Veenkoloniaal Museum exhibits the development of the Groninger Peat district but also the history of hundreds of inland barges and a similar number of skippers families. For the Groningen peatdistrict the 19th century is a golden age. Agriculture, shipping and potato starch and strawboard industries flourish. Hundreds of captains sail from Veendam, Wildervank, Oude Pekela, Nieuwe Pekela to Portugal, Great Britain and the Baltic Sea. Strawboard is exported to England, which explains the name Albion of one of the factories. Amazing when you consider that these enterprising villages are situated more than forty kilometres from the coast. In 2008–2019, the museum had between 20,000 and 29,000 visitors annually.

Veendam (Dutch pronunciation: [veːnˈdɑm] ) is a town and municipality with a population of 27,752 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Veendam was established in 1648 as a peat colony by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck.Holland America Line has named four ships Veendam after the town. The municipality includes Westerdiepsterdallen, the smallest town in the Netherlands.

Menterwolde (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌmɛntərˈʋɔldə] ) is a former municipality in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. On January 1, 2018, Menterwolde merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Slochteren, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen.

Muntendam is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the Dutch province of Groningen. The village has a population of 4,635 (2021). Muntendam had been an independent parish since the Middle Ages, but until 1840 it was ecclesiastically part of Zuidbroek. From 1811 until 1990 it was a separate municipality, which boasted the title 'reddest (most socialist) municipality in the Netherlands', with a council of 11 containing 7 PvdA (Labour Party) members and 2 CPN (Communist Party) members. (However, nearby Reiderland had had a vast CPN majority since WWII, so the claim is rather too strong). When a new mayor had to be appointed in 1980 (at the time a municipality had no say in the matter), it was assumed that it would become a PvdA mayor as it had always been. However, the then minister of the interior, Hans Wiegel of the right-wing VVD, decided that this very left-wing part of the Netherlands needed a change and appointed a D66 (left of centre) mayor. This led to a cold reception and the first time a Dutch mayor was not officially inaugurated. Over time, however, people started to like him and when he moved to a bigger municipality there was even an action to keep him (to no avail). Not much later, the method of appointing a mayor in the Netherlands was changed, with the municipality putting up a request which is usually followed.

Wildervank is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Veendam, about 3 km south of the centre of Veendam itself. It was founded in 1647 by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck as a peat colony in the Wildervankster bog. Wildervank was a separate municipality until 1969, when the area was divided between Veendam and Stadskanaal.

Meeden-Muntendam (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmeːdəmʏntə(n)ˈdɑm]; abbreviation: Mmd) is a former railway station between Meeden and Muntendam in the Netherlands.

Westerdiepsterdallen is a hamlet, near Groningen. For a long time, it only had 1 inhabitant, when one of the houses was empty. By only having 1 inhabitant, it made it to the 1984 Guinness Book of Records. The hamlet has grown to 5 people.

Eexterveenschekanaal is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 19 km east of Assen.
