Rutherfordton-Spindale Middle School

Trinity Lutheran Church, previously known as St. John's Episcopal Church, is a historic church at 702 N. Main Street in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The Greek Revival-style church building was constructed in 1846 for the parish of St. John's Episcopal Church and remained an Episcopal church until 1936, when it was purchased by the Lutheran Synod and became Trinity Lutheran Church. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The building suffered a damaging fire in 2011 and is currently closed.

It encompasses 43 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object in the central business district of Rutherfordton. The district developed from about 1898 to 1945, and includes notable examples of Classical Revival and Colonial Revival style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Rutherford County Courthouse designed by Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975). Other notable contributing buildings include the U.S. Post Office (1931), the Norris Public Library (1933), (former) Rutherford County Jail, Commercial National Bank, Keeter Hardware Company Building, Geer Commercial Building, Southern Hotel Company Building, Geer-Warlick Motor Company Building, and City Hall (1925) designed by Milburn, Heister & Company.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Carrier Houses, also known as the Carrier-Ward House and Carrier-McBrayer House, are two historic homes located near Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The Carrier-Ward House was built in 1879, and is a two-story, weatherboarded, side-gabled Queen Anne-style frame house. It has a front projecting wing and a three-story square tower with pyramidal roof. The Carrier-McBrayer House was built about 1835, and is a transitional Federal / Greek Revival style I-house with two-story ell. The weatherboarded house sits on a brick foundation.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Rutherford County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Louis H. Asbury and built in 1925–1926. It is a two-story, Renaissance Revival style building faced with a smooth stone veneer. The front facade features a octopus style portico in antis.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is located in the Main Street Historic District.

St. Luke's Chapel is a historic chapel located in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The chapel was commissioned by Dr. and Mrs. Henry Norris of Philadelphia, founders of Rutherford Hospital, to serve its staff and patients, arising out of the Social Gospel Movement.Completed in 1908, it is a small, one-story, frame, vernacular Gothic Revival style gable-front building. A one-story gable-roofed frame wing was added about 1915. It was restored in 1945 and again in 1965, and had its exterior renovated in 1991. It is the oldest building on the grounds of Rutherford Hospital, and the only remaining original building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Gilbert Town Historic District is an archaeological site listed in the National Register of Historic Places located in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. From 1776 to 1783, Gilbert Town was an important trading center and served as a camp for both Patriot and Loyalist forces during the American Revolutionary War. Gilbert Town included the William Gilbert House, a store, tavern, mill, and blacksmith shop. Gilbert Town was also the site of the Rutherford County Courthouse from 1781 to 1783. James Dexter Ledbetter House is a historic home located near Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It built in 1914, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay, double pile frame dwelling with Classical Revival and Colonial Revival style design elements. It sits on a low brick foundation and has a hipped roof. The front facade features a two-story engaged portico supported by Tuscan order columns, with a one-story wraparound section also supported by Tuscan columns.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Isothermal Community College (ICC) is a public community college in Spindale, North Carolina. Named after its location in the thermal belt, an area in the foothills of Western North Carolina with significantly milder temperatures than its immediate neighboring areas, it is part of the North Carolina Community College System. Isothermal is also the home to the public broadcast station WNCW. The Foundation of the Performing Arts Center at ICC is a community center that hosts plays, concerts, and other events by featured artists and groups. ICC offers several programs, such as Huskins courses in which high school students from the three local high schools can take and attend college courses, and the Rutherford Early College High (REaCH), an alternative high school that combines a college education with high school courses. The school's athletic program is known as the Patriots. The president, since February 1, 2021, is Margaret Annunziata. Preceding her was Walter H. Dalton, former lieutenant governor of North Carolina.
