Shepley

Shepley railway station serves the villages of Shepley and Shelley in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Penistone Line operated by Northern. Opened by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1850, it is located at the southern end of one of the two passing loops on the otherwise single track section between Barnsley and Huddersfield. Shepley was also the junction station for the former branch line to Clayton West, via Skelmanthorpe from its opening in 1879 until closure in January 1983 – the branch has since been reopened as the minimum gauge Kirklees Light Railway, whose western terminus at Shelley is located just under a mile to the east. The station layout is slightly unusual in that the platforms are staggered (on the opposite sides of a road bridge, as can be seen in the accompanying photo) rather than being located opposite each other like other stations on the route. The station once had a goods yard which has now been converted to housing; its main building on the northbound platform still stands, but is not in rail use.

Stocksmoor railway station serves the village of Stocksmoor near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. The station is 6.25 miles (10 km) from Huddersfield on the Penistone Line operated by Northern. Most of the Penistone Line is single track between Huddersfield and Barnsley (and has been since 1989). However, Stocksmoor marks the first point (for Sheffield-bound trains) or last point (for Huddersfield-bound trains) where there is dual running track (the passing loop extends as far south as the next station at Shepley and most trains are scheduled to pass each other on this section).

Thunder Bridge or Thunderbridge is a hamlet and bridge in the civil parish of Kirkburton, in the Kirklees district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It is near the A629 road and Stocksmoor railway station. Its post town is Huddersfield. It has a pub called the Woodman Inn. The bridge is a Grade II listed building which is a road bridge over Shepley Dike.

Stocksmoor is a hamlet, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It is situated between the villages of Shepley and Brockholes. The total population of Thurstonland, Stocksmoor and Thunder Bridge together was 953 in the 2001 census.[1] It has a railway station on the Penistone railway line which connects Huddersfield and Sheffield and is the traditional terminus of the 341 (First Huddersfield) bus service from Huddersfield town centre. Stocksmoor is the birthplace of Ben Swift Chambers, the church minister who, in Liverpool, founded St Domingo's parish football team, which became Everton Football Club. In 1838, upwards of 1,000 small Roman coins of copper and brass were found at Whistones, Stocks Moor. The Times of London describes how they were found by a labouring man who was digging in a field not far from Thurstonland and found them near the foundation of a wall. Yet, 'as is often the case in such discoveries, being a stranger to their value, he was induced to part with them to different individuals for a trifling consideration.' It then goes on to describe how they 'understand that among the coins discovered at Thurstonland there are many of the lower empire, several of Carausius, who, it will be remembered, possessed himself of Britain, as emperor, under Dioclesian, and who repaired the Roman wall in Scotland. In the collection purchased by one individual there are the coins of Constantine, Constantius, Lucilius, and others.'

Birdsedge (or Birds Edge) is a small village in the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England, on the edge of Yorkshire's Pennine Hills, standing just below 1,000 feet (305 m) above sea level. It is approximately 6 miles (10 km) south-east from Huddersfield and about 4 miles (6 km) north-west from Penistone, between the villages of Shepley and Upper Cumberworth and is linked with the neighbouring hamlet of High Flatts, a former Quaker settlement (and still home to a Friends Meeting House). Though originally an area of upland farms, woollen weaving and stone quarries, it is now a dormitory village for nearby towns and cities of Huddersfield, Barnsley, Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds. Although the village has no industry it hosts Birdsedge First School, Birdsedge Wesleyan Reform Church and Birdsedge Village Hall. A mill operates in the village, part of the Z Hinchliffe mill complex located in the nearby village of Denby Dale.

Huddersfield Town Women Football Club is an English women's football club based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The team play their homes matches at the Stafflex Arena. They compete in the FA Women's National League North and are affiliated to the professional men's club Huddersfield Town. They were previously known as Huddersfield Town Ladies, but changed to Huddersfield Town Women in 2019.

Shelley Community Football Club is an English football club based in Shelley, West Yorkshire. They were most recently members of the North West Counties League Division One North and play at Storthes Hall Park. The club is a FA Charter Standard Club affiliated to the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Football Association.

Shelley is a village in the civil parish of Kirkburton in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The village is 3 miles (5 km) north of Holmfirth and 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Huddersfield.

Myers Wood is a wooded area in the village of Kirkburton, West Yorkshire, England. It forms part of a heavily forested area to the west of the village, occupying the rise in the valley leading up to Storthes Hall and beyond. It is directly west of the main Penistone Road, opposite Riley. Saville Wood is directly south, close to Thunder Bridge. Local residents consider the wood to be of poor quality due to the absence of woodland management.The wood is significant for the discovery of an iron-working site dating from the Middle Ages. Archaeological excavations by a team from the University of Bradford uncovered the most complete site in the north of England. The Cistercian monastic iron-working site was in operation from the 12th century to the 14th century, using advanced techniques and water power for smelting and smithing iron. The site is not a tourist feature, there being no formal administration or oversight by a heritage body; however, it is possible to access the site via the footpath that runs through Saville Wood.

Shelley railway station forms the western terminus of the Whistlestop Valley and serves the village of Shelley, West Yorkshire. England. There was never a station here on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.

Kirkburton is a village, civil parish and ward in Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It is 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Huddersfield. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the township comprises the villages of Kirkburton and Highburton and several hamlets, including Thunder Bridge, Thorncliffe, Storthes Hall, Burton Royd, Riley, Dogley, Common Side, Causeway Foot, Lane Head and Linfit. According to the 2011 census the civil parish had a population of 26,439, while the village itself had a population of 4,299.

Upper Cumberworth is a small village in West Yorkshire, England, within the civil parish of Denby Dale and the Diocese of Wakefield. It is between the villages of Denby Dale and Shepley, above the village of Lower Cumberworth. It occupies a rural location, surrounded by fields and woodland but close to Huddersfield, Barnsley, Wakefield and Sheffield by public transport or road. The 2001 Census gave the population of Upper Cumberworth and Lower Cumberworth combined as 1,222.
