The district encompasses 105 contributing buildings, 6 contributing sites, 7 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object on eight major farms in rural Pitt County near Winterville. It includes buildings largely dated from about 1890 to 1953 and notable examples of Greek Revival and Classical Revival style architecture. They include the Fletcher Farm, the Charles and Maggie McLawhorn farms, the Langston-Edwards properties, the Dail Farm, the Dennis McLawhorn farms, the McLawhorn-Abbott property, and the Richard Herman McLawhorn farms. Notable individual buildings include the Joseph Smith House, former Renston School and the first Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, Spier (Speir, Spire) Worthington House (c. 1840), Langston-Edwards House (c. 1840), the Dail House (c. 1850), and the Charles McLawhorn House (c. 1880, moved c. 1890).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Notable buildings include the original Ayden Town Hall (1915), Turnage Brothers Building (c. 1914), Moore House (c. 1890), John Stanley Hart House (c. 1893), Thelbert Worthington House (1930) designed by Leila Ross Wilburn, Ayden Baptist Church (1941), the Lloyd and Lillian Turnage House (1923) and Ayden Methodist Church (1926) designed by Benton & Benton Associates, Zion Chapel Free Will Baptist Church (1924), and Mount Olive Baptist Church (c. 1915).Turnage Bros. was a farm equipment business.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Cox-Ange House is a historic home located at Winterville, Pitt County, North Carolina. It was built about 1900 to 1904, and is a two-story, L-shaped, vernacular Queen Anne style frame dwelling with a one-story wing. An addition was built about 1910. It features a one-story, wraparound porch with a small sleeping porch on the second story. Also on the property are the contributing barn (c. 1900–1904), garage (c. 1930), wash house (c. 1930), and landscaped yard.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
