Carstairs Junction

Carstairs railway station serves the village of Carstairs in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is a major junction station on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), situated close to the point at which the lines from London Euston and Edinburgh to Glasgow Central merge. Constructed originally by the Caledonian Railway, the station is operated today by ScotRail and is also served by one TransPennine Express trains service per day between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central. All other services by TransPennine Express and services operated by Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry and London North Eastern Railway pass the station, but do not stop.

The State Hospital (also known as Carstairs Hospital, or simply Carstairs) is a psychiatric hospital in the village of Carstairs, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It provides care and treatment in conditions of high security for around 140 patients from Scotland and Northern Ireland. The hospital is managed by the State Hospitals Board for Scotland which is a public body accountable to the First Minister of Scotland through the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates. It is a Special Health Board, part of the NHS Scotland and the only hospital of its kind within Scotland.

Carstairs House, also known as Monteith House, is a country house 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) south-west of Carstairs South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The house is protected as a category A listed building.

Carstairs Castle was a stronghold in the east of Carstairs, a short distance from the current site of Carstairs Parish Church. Now long gone, it dates back to at least 1126 when it was given as a gift to the Bishops of Glasgow. In 1302, at the height of the Scottish Wars of Independence, Cartairs Castle had a garrison of seventy troops made up of ten men at arms, twenty named soldiers and forty footmen, which was greater than most local castles indicating that this was of strategic importance - Lanark Castle, by comparison, had a garrison of around 15 men at the time.

Carstairs is located 5 miles (8 kilometres) east of the county town of Lanark and the West Coast Main Line runs through the village. The village is served by Carstairs railway station, which is served by the Caledonian Sleeper to and from London Euston. Carstairs is best known as the location of the State Hospital. Carstairs is applied to the places Carstairs Village and the village of Carstairs Junction where the railway station is situated. The two places are two completely different villages divided by 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) of land, a parkland area (Monteith Park) and the railway line. Carstairs Village has massively expanded since 2007 with the building of Millwood Estate.

Pettinain is a hamlet and civil parish in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, 7 miles (11 km) east of Lanark. Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pettinain in 1887 as "par. and vil., Lanarkshire, on river Clyde - par., 3900 ac., pop. 360; vil., 3 miles S. of Carstairs Junction; P.O".

Carnwath railway station was located just west of the village of Carnwath, on the Caledonian Railway line between Carstairs railway station and Edinburgh. It was closed by in 1966 concurrently with the stations to the north Auchengray, Cobbinshaw, and Harburn.

Carnwath (Gaelic: A' Chathair Nuadh; English: "New Fort") is a moorland village on the southern edge of the Pentland Hills of South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The village lies about 30 mi (50 km) south of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is bounded by the North Medwyn and South Medwyn watercourses.

Bankhead railway station served the isolated settlement of Bankhead, east of Carstairs Junction in South Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1867 to 1945 on the Dolphinton branch.
