Carstairs Castle

Carstairs (, Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Tarrais) is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Carstairs is located 5 miles (8 kilometres) east of the county town of Lanark and the West Coast Main Line runs through the village. The village is served by Carstairs railway station, which is served by the Caledonian Sleeper to and from London Euston. Carstairs is best known as the location of the State Hospital. Carstairs is applied to the places Carstairs Village and the village of Carstairs Junction where the railway station is situated. The two places are two completely different villages divided by 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) of land, a parkland area (Monteith Park) and the railway line. Carstairs Village has massively expanded since 2007 with the building of Millwood Estate.

Carstairs House, also known as Monteith House, is a country house 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) south-west of Carstairs South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The house is protected as a category A listed building.

Carstairs Junction (Scottish Gaelic: Snaim Caisteal Tarrais) is a village in South Lanarkshire. Taking its name from the village of Carstairs and nearby railway junction, the village grew around the railway station which opened in 1848. In 2011 it had a population of 747.The village has a primary school, Carstairs Junction Primary School. A church, Pettinain Church, is Category B listed.

Carstairs railway station serves the village of Carstairs in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is a major junction station on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), situated close to the point at which the lines from London Euston and Edinburgh to Glasgow Central merge. Constructed originally by the Caledonian Railway, the station is operated today by ScotRail and is also served by one TransPennine Express trains service per day between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central. All other services by TransPennine Express and services operated by Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry and London North Eastern Railway pass the station, but do not stop.

The State Hospital (also known as Carstairs Hospital, or simply Carstairs) is a psychiatric hospital in the village of Carstairs, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It provides care and treatment in conditions of high security for around 140 patients from Scotland and Northern Ireland. The hospital is managed by the State Hospitals Board for Scotland which is a public body accountable to the First Minister of Scotland through the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates. It is a Special Health Board, part of the NHS Scotland and the only hospital of its kind within Scotland.

Pettinain is a hamlet and civil parish in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, 7 miles (11 km) east of Lanark. Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pettinain in 1887 as "par. and vil., Lanarkshire, on river Clyde - par., 3900 ac., pop. 360; vil., 3 miles S. of Carstairs Junction; P.O".

Carnwath railway station was located just west of the village of Carnwath, on the Caledonian Railway line between Carstairs railway station and Edinburgh. It was closed by in 1966 concurrently with the stations to the north Auchengray, Cobbinshaw, and Harburn.

Cleghorn railway station served the village of Cleghorn, South Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1848 to 1965 on the Caledonian main line.

Cleghorn is a village in Lanark in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Cleghorn Village is around 2+1⁄4 miles (3.6 km) north-east of Lanark town, and is a small close community with about 250–300 residents and under 50 houses. The village is in the catchment area of Lanark Grammar School. The Mouse Water runs through Cleghorn, coming down from the hills of the village of Forth, through Carstairs Village.People have been staying in the area of Cleghorn for over a thousand years, from wealthy landowners to the Romans, who built roads and forts around the area. Near the village is the site of the 46.7-acre (18.9 ha) Cleghorn Roman camp which dates from the 2nd Century and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The camp is in a defensive position overlooking a Roman road as it crosses Mouse Water, the camp could accommodate two Roman legions – around 12,000 men.The village of Cleghorn was established around the start of the 20th century, although there was an estate near where the village now sits. The house was known as Hagholm house, which the new main through road of the village has been named after. The village was served by Cleghorn railway station 1848 to 1965 on the Caledonian main line, the station building remains standing today. There is still a level crossing at the nearby Cleghorn Junction. Cleghorn Glen and Cleghorn Bridge are sites named after the village and are close to, but not in, it. The walkways are made up of ancient woodlands and have great views as it winds its way from Cleghorn Bridge, to Cartland Bridge just outside Lanark. The woodlands are protected and designated a national nature reserve, they are managed as part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands. Other places of interest are Newmills Fishery and foundation structures from the Roman invasion period.

Winston Barracks was a British Army base, located 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Lanark, Scotland. It was situated in the fork of the A73 and A70 trunk roads, close to Lanark Racecourse. The site was decommissioned in 1994, and some of the buildings have been renovated as part of a housing development.
