Boone, Tennessee

Boones Creek is a neighborhood of Johnson City, in northern Washington County, Tennessee. Almost all of Boones Creek has been annexed by Johnson City, and has become a neighborhood of Johnson City. However, much of it has the postal addresses of "Gray, Tennessee". It extends along Boone's Creek and other nearby tributaries of Boone Lake, from the strip of restaurants, hotels and other businesses around the intersection of Boone's Creek Road (State Route 354) and Interstate 26, northeastwards to the older business district at the intersection of 354 and State Route 36, and up to Boone Lake, formerly the Watauga River.

WJCW (910 AM) is a commercial radio station, licensed to Johnson City, Tennessee and serving the Tri-Cities radio market (Johnson City-Bristol-Kingsport). It is owned by Cumulus Media and airs a talk radio format. WJCW's transmitter, offices and studios are on Free Hill Road in Gray, Tennessee. The complex also houses the studios for Cumulus' other Tri-Cities radio stations. WJCW broadcasts with a 5,000 watt non-directional signal in the daytime. At night, to protect other stations on AM 910, the station reduces power to 1,000 watts and uses a directional antenna. The station is East Tennessee's AM primary entry point station for the Emergency Alert System, with WJXB-FM in Knoxville performing the PEP function on FM in east Tennessee.

The Watauga Association (sometimes referred to as the Republic of Watauga) was a semi-autonomous government created in 1772 by frontier settlers living along the Watauga River in what is now Elizabethton, Tennessee. Although it lasted only a few years, the Watauga Association provided a basis for what later developed into the state of Tennessee and likely influenced other western frontier governments in the trans-Appalachian region. North Carolina annexed the Watauga settlement area, by then known as the Washington District, in November 1776. Within a year, the area was placed under a county government, becoming Washington County, North Carolina, in November 1777. This area covers the present day Washington County, Carter County, and other areas now located in the northeast part of the state of Tennessee. While there is no evidence that the Watauga Association ever claimed to be outside the sovereign territory of the British Crown, historians have often cited the Association as the earliest attempt by American-born colonists to form an independent democratic government. In 1774, Virginia governor Lord Dunmore called the Watauga Association a "dangerous example" of Americans forming a government "distinct from and independent of his majesty's authority." President Theodore Roosevelt later wrote that the Watauga settlers were the "first men of American birth to establish a free and independent community on the continent." While no copy of the settlers' compact, known as the Articles of the Watauga Association, has ever been found, related documents tend to imply that the Watauga settlers still considered themselves British subjects, even after the initial hostilities of the American Revolution had commenced.

Oak Grove is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,425 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

Gray is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Tennessee, United States and a suburb of Johnson City. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The population was 1,222 at the 2010 census.Gray lies just outside the junction between Interstate 81 and Interstate 26, the latter of which runs directly through the town. The town was founded as Gray Station, Tennessee, as it mainly served as a railway depot; the place became Gray in preferred usage. The Gray area consisted primarily of rural farmland until the 1990s, when some suburban areas began to take shape. Since 2000, the Gray area has gradually grown, with the addition of new chain restaurants and stores. A museum connected to the Gray Fossil Site, an early Pliocene Lagerstätte discovered during road construction in 2000, opened in 2007. Some of the area of Gray has been annexed by Johnson City.

WETB (790 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting a classic hits format as 93.7 Goat FM. It is licensed to Johnson City, Tennessee, and serves the Tri-Cities area. It is owned by Kenneth C. Hill with studios on Brandonwood Drive in Johnson City. On weekends, WETB carries classic episodes of Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 from the 1980s and 90s. On Sundays, much of the programming is Christian radio. By day, WETB is powered at 5,000 watts non-directional. But at night, to prevent interference to other stations on 790 AM, it must greatly reduce power to 72 watts. For most of WETB's early history, it was a daytimer, required to go off the air at night. The transmitter is on Brandonwood Drive, near the station's studios. Programming is also heard on 250-watt FM translator W229DH at 93.7 MHz.

WKTP (1590 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports format. Licensed to Jonesborough, Tennessee, United States, the station is currently owned by Glenwood Communications Corporation (through subsidiary Holston Valley Broadcasting Corporation) and features programming from ESPN Radio.

The Gray Fossil Site is an Early Pliocene assemblage of fossils dating between 4.5 and 4.9 million years old, located near the town of Gray in Washington County, Tennessee. The site was discovered during road construction on Tennessee State Route 75 by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in May 2000, after which local officials decided to preserve the site for research and education. The site became part of East Tennessee State University, and the Gray Fossil Site & Museum was opened on the site in 2007. The ancient habitat of the Gray Fossil Site was a pond formed within a sinkhole surrounded by a warm, wet forest. The fossils found at the site represent the ancient plants and animals that lived and died in and around the sinkhole pond. As the first site of its age known from the Appalachian region, the Gray Fossil Site is a unique window into the past. Research at the site has yielded many surprising discoveries, including new species of red panda, rhinoceros, pond turtle, hickory tree, and more. The site also hosts the world's largest known assemblage of fossil tapirs.

Boone Dam is a hydroelectric and flood control dam on the South Fork Holston River on the border between Sullivan County and Washington County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is one of three dams on the South Fork Holston owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which built the dam in the early 1950s as part of greater efforts to control flooding in the Tennessee River watershed. The dam impounds the 4,500-acre (1,800 ha) Boone Lake, and its tailwaters are part of Fort Patrick Henry Lake. The dam and associated infrastructure were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Boone Dam is named for frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820), who was active in the general area in the 1760s.

Boone Lake is a reservoir in Sullivan and Washington counties in northeastern Tennessee, formed by the impoundment of the South Fork Holston River and Watauga River behind Boone Dam. Boone Reservoir’s 4,400 acres extend along the South Fork Holston River forming two river extensions. According to TVA, “at maximum pool level, one arm of the lake extends about 16 miles up the South Fork Holston River, and the other extends approximately 15 miles up the Watauga River". The dam and reservoir are maintained and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The lake has a surface area of about 4,400 acres (18 km2) and a flood-storage capacity of 75,829 acre-feet (93,534,000 m3). Water levels in the reservoir fluctuate over a range of about 20 feet (6 m) over the course of a year.Boone Lake may house one of the smaller lakes that the state has to offer, but the lakefront real estate packs a southern punch - with the average cost of shorefront property sitting at a cool $1.37 million according to a 2020 study. This places Boone Lake as the sixteenth most expensive lake shorefront property in the United States. At the time of the study, the dam repair was still underway; greatly reducing the accessibility, aesthetics and shoreline of the lake. Recreational facilities on the lake include a swimming area and a boat ramp. Water skiing and fishing are popular activities on the lake. Fish species in the lake of interest to sport fishermen include brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and striped bass. There are precautionary fish consumption advisories for catfish and carp due to PCB and chlordane concentrations. Children and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to consume these two species, and other persons are advised to limit their consumption to one meal per month.Boone Lake is the public forum to discuss topics related to Boone Lake.

Daniel Boone High School is a public high school located in Gray, Tennessee, US. It is one of two high schools in the Washington County Schools system. Daniel Boone High School opened in 1971–72 to serve the students of the northern half of Washington County, Tennessee. Its feeder schools are Boones Creek Elementary, Fall Branch School (elementary and middle school), Gray Elementary, Ridgeview Elementary, and Sulphur Springs Elementary. The school's athletic and academic teams compete as the "Trailblazers" and wear colors of scarlet and old gold. Daniel Boone High School also has a Marine Corps ROTC program with drill teams.In 2008, the football field was named after long time head coach Ken Green. He had been coach for over 30 years.Daniel Boone's current football coach is Jeremy Jenkins, who also coaches softball. Jeremy, a Boone graduate has made the playoffs two years in a row. Annually, the football team plays David Crockett High School in the "Musket Bowl" game. The rivalry, which goes back 49 years, is played between the two high schools in Washington County, Tennessee. The winner receives a replica musket, and unlike trophies in collegiate season bowl games, the musket is traded back and forth every year. (Unless one team wins the game three times in a row, then the school keeps the musket and a new musket must be purchased) As of 2023, the standings heavily favor Daniel Boone at 39–14. Daniel Boone High School's enrollment has been fairly steady for the last few years, remaining between 1,100 and 1,300 students.
