Trewern Hall

Buttington railway station was a station in Buttington, Powys, Wales. The station was opened in November 1860, several months after the line that served it (the Oswestry and Newtown Railway). A second line - the jointly operated Shrewsbury and Welshpool Railway reached the station in January 1862. It was substantially rebuilt (with additional platforms) in 1893 by the Cambrian Railway, when the route west to Welshpool was doubled. It was closed to both passenger and goods traffic on 12 September 1960, along with all the other intermediate stations on the Shrewsbury to Welshpool section. The former O&NR route to Oswestry and Whitchurch subsequently closed in January 1965, leaving just the Shrewsbury to Welshpool line in operation - this is still open today, though no trace of the station itself remains.

Trewern is a small village, community and electoral ward in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. The community includes the villages of Buttington and Middletown, situated 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northeast of Welshpool, 14.5 miles (23.3 km) west of Shrewsbury and 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Wales-England border.

Pool Quay railway station was a station in Pool Quay, Powys, Wales. The station was opened on 1 May 1860 and closed on 18 January 1965.

The Battle of Buttington was fought in 893 between a Viking army and an alliance of Anglo-Saxons and Welsh. The annals for 893 reported that a large Viking army had landed in the Lympne Estuary, Kent and a smaller force had landed in the Thames estuary under the command of Danish king Hastein. These were reinforced by ships from the settled Danes of East Anglia and Northumbria, some of this contingent sailed round the coast to besiege a fortified place (known as a burh) and Exeter, both in Devon. The English king Alfred the Great, on hearing of Exeter's demise, led all his mounted men to relieve the city. He left his son-in-law Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians and ealdormen Æthelhelm, Æthelnoth, and others in charge of defending various towns and cities from the rest of the Viking army. The king's thegns managed to assemble a great army consisting of both Saxons and Welsh. The combined army laid siege to the Vikings who had built a fortification at Buttington. After several weeks the starving Vikings broke out of their fortification only to be beaten by the combined English and Welsh army with many of the Vikings being put to flight.

The Abbey of Strata Marcella (Welsh: Abaty Ystrad Marchell) was a medieval Cistercian monastery situated at Ystrad Marchell (Strata Marcella being the Latinised form of the Welsh name) on the west bank of the River Severn near Welshpool, Powys, Wales.

The Buttington Oak was a tree near to Offa's Dyke at Buttington, Wales, said to have been planted to mark the site of the Battle of Buttington between the Vikings and a Mercian, Wessex and Welsh force in 893. It had been cyclically pollarded for timber until around 150 years ago. The oak tree was rediscovered in 2009. In 2017 it was badly damaged by storms, finally collapsing in February 2018. The Buttington Yew, also planted in commemoration of the battle in 893, survives and in 2022 was added to the roster of 70 Ancient Trees in The Queen's Green Canopy.

Criggion Radio Station was a transmitter site latterly operated by BT on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence. It was located near the village of Criggion in the parish of Bausley with Criggion, which lies in the county of Powys, Wales. It was established in World War II as a back-up unit for Rugby Radio Station and took over the latter's traffic for a short period in 1943 following a fire at Rugby. Operating on 19.6 kHz with the callsign GBZ, the station was used until its shutdown on 1 April 2003 for sending messages to submarines. This task (and that of Rugby) is now carried out by the Anthorn radio station. Criggion's VLF antenna was hung from three free-standing steel lattice towers at 182.9 metres (600 ft) tall, three guyed masts at 213.4 metres (700 ft) tall and a rock anchor. The towers and masts were demolished in August 2003 but, although there is now less obvious visible evidence that a large radio station existed on the site, the derelict main transmitting building still survived in 2011 and the foundation sites of the former masts can be still be located on satellite and aerial photographs. As of May 2013 the remaining parts of the station were reported to be in a state of disrepair.

Breidden Hill is an extinct volcanic hill in Powys, Wales, near the town of Welshpool. It is immediately surrounded by the villages of Trewern, Middletown, Criggion, Crew Green and Llandrinio. The peak of the hill reaches to 367 metres (1,204 ft). Footpaths which lead up to the summit provide excellent 360 degree views over Powys and over the border with England to the Shropshire Plain. Breidden Hill is one of five peaks with neighbouring Moel y Golfa, which is the highest at 403 metres (1,322 ft), which is a "Marilyn", with a prominence of 261 metres (856 ft). The three others are Cefn y Castell (also known as Middletown Hill), Kempsters Hill and Bausley Hill (all over 800 feet (240 m) high) with its Iron Age galleried fortification. The five hills are sometimes collectively known as the Breidden Hills, and form a northern extension of the Long Mountain. There are remains of a British Iron Age hillfort en route which may have been the site of the last stand of Caractacus. Rodney's Pillar at the top was built by the gentlemen of Montgomeryshire who supplied oak wood from the area and shipped it down the River Severn (which runs nearby at Bausley with Criggion) to Bristol where Admiral Rodney's naval fleet was built. Rodney's Pillar is increasingly being used as a navigational aid by helicopter pilots in this area, due to its visibility from large areas of Wales. Beginning around 1789, for many years members of the Breidden Society, founded by John Dovaston (1740–1808), met near Rodney's Pillar for an annual festival of food, drink, poetry, and song; records of their meetings for 1809–15 are preserved at the Houghton Library of Harvard University (MS Eng 1168).There is a large quarry on the western and northern sides of Breidden Hill. The rock is a thick gabbroic-dolerite laccolith, which is a source of roadstone.On 27 June 2018, a wildfire broke out on Breidden Hill, destroying an area of grassland close to Rodney's Pillar.

Arddleen railway station served the village of Arddlin in Powys, Wales, sited on the former Cambrian Railways between Oswestry and Welshpool. Served by the Oswestry and Newtown railway, it was situated near the English border.

Arddlîn (sometimes anglicised as Arddleen) is a village in Powys, central Wales. It lies about 5 miles north of Welshpool, in the community of Llandrinio. It had a population of 418 as of the 2011 census, with 31% born in Wales.The village was formerly served by Arddleen railway station on the Cambrian Railway network.
