Buttington Oak

The Abbey of Strata Marcella (Welsh: Abaty Ystrad Marchell) was a medieval Cistercian monastery situated at Ystrad Marchell (Strata Marcella being the Latinised form of the Welsh name) on the west bank of the River Severn near Welshpool, Powys, Wales.

Pool Quay (Welsh: Cei'r Trallwng) is a small village in Powys, Mid Wales.

Buttington railway station was a station in Buttington, Powys, Wales. The station was opened in November 1860, several months after the line that served it (the Oswestry and Newtown Railway). A second line - the jointly operated Shrewsbury and Welshpool Railway reached the station in January 1862. It was substantially rebuilt (with additional platforms) in 1893 by the Cambrian Railway, when the route west to Welshpool was doubled. It was closed to both passenger and goods traffic on 12 September 1960, along with all the other intermediate stations on the Shrewsbury to Welshpool section. The former O&NR route to Oswestry and Whitchurch subsequently closed in January 1965, leaving just the Shrewsbury to Welshpool line in operation - this is still open today, though no trace of the station itself remains.

Buttington (Welsh: Tal-y-bont) is a village in Powys, Wales, less than 3 km from Welshpool and about 300 m from the River Severn, in the community of Trewern. The Montgomery Canal passes through the village. The village stands on a slight rise above the river's floodplain, by the ancient ford called Rhyd-y-groes, where Offa's Dyke meets the Severn. The ford retained strategic value: reportedly in 1039 a battle took place here between Welsh and English forces.

The Battle of Buttington was fought in 893 between a Viking army and an alliance of Anglo-Saxons and Welsh. The annals for 893 reported that a large Viking army had landed in the Lympne Estuary, Kent and a smaller force had landed in the Thames estuary under the command of Danish king Hastein. These were reinforced by ships from the settled Danes of East Anglia and Northumbria, some of this contingent sailed round the coast to besiege a fortified place (known as a burh) and Exeter, both in Devon. The English king Alfred the Great, on hearing of Exeter's demise, led all his mounted men to relieve the city. He left his son-in-law Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians and ealdormen Æthelhelm, Æthelnoth, and others in charge of defending various towns and cities from the rest of the Viking army. The king's thegns managed to assemble a great army consisting of both Saxons and Welsh. The combined army laid siege to the Vikings who had built a fortification at Buttington. After several weeks the starving Vikings broke out of their fortification only to be beaten by the combined English and Welsh army with many of the Vikings being put to flight.

Gungrog is a geographical area which is part of Welshpool (English) Y Trallwng (Welsh), Powys in Wales. It is a stretch of elevated ground which includes residential development but which also has significant areas of agricultural land. The area runs north to south on the western side of Welshpool. Gungrog is part of the town of Welshpool and is an electoral ward for the Town Council. It is mentioned in the Welsh Medieval tale “Breuddwyd Rhonabwy” as being the place where the fictional character Rhonabwy, has a dream which depicts an encounter with King Arthur who is about to do battle with the Saxons is set. Known as The Dream of Rhonabwy in English it is part of the collection of Welsh Medieval tales known as the Mabinogi or Mabinogion. These date from between the 11th and 14th centuries.

Welshpool High School is located in Welshpool, Powys. It is a combined secondary school and sixth form, catering for pupils aged 11 to 19. In 2022, a new headteacher was appointed.

Trewern Hall or Trewern Farmhouse is a country house in Montgomeryshire, Wales, close to the Shropshire border. It is on a spur in the floodplain of the River Severn, in the Trewern community area of what is now Powys, to the north of the A458 road from Shrewsbury to Welshpool. It is a fine example of a Severn valley half-timbered house. The Grade II* listed hall was occupied by the Lloyd, Francis and Whittaker families. In 1985–86 (SW end) and 1993–94 (NE end) it was extensively restored with some remodelling by the architect M. J. Garner for Murray Ll. Chapman.

Burgedin is a village in Powys, Wales. The Montgomery Canal passes through the village.

Welshpool railway station on the Cambrian Line in Powys, mid-Wales, serves the town of Welshpool (Welsh: Y Trallwng).

The Victoria Memorial Hospital (Welsh: Ysbyty Coffa Victoria) is a health facility in Salop Road, Welshpool, Powys, Wales. It is managed by the Powys Teaching Health Board.

Pool Quay railway station was a station in Pool Quay, Powys, Wales. The station was opened on 1 May 1860 and closed on 18 January 1965.
