Hardeg Castle

Hardegsen (German pronunciation: [ˈhaːɐ̯.dɛksn̩] (listen)) is a town in the district of Northeim, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km southwest of Northeim, and 15 km northwest of Göttingen. Burg Hardeg is a medieval castle in Hardegsen. The castle was founded in the 12th century as a residence of the House of Welf. In the 1320 the stone castle was rebuilt by Conrad und Ludwig von Rosdorf. In the end of the 14th century the castle passed to Otto von Braunschweig zu Göttingen. From 1568 to 1823 it housed the local magistrate. In the end of the 18th century, Burg Hardeg, once a princely castle, was stripped of its former luxuries and converted into a farmhouse . In 1972 the business vacated the castle, and its management passed to the municipality and local preservation society.

Moringen is a town in the district Northeim, in the southern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. The town consists of the center Moringen and eight surrounding villages, Fredelsloh being one of them.

Harste is a village to the northwest of Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany, belonging to the Gemeinde Bovenden. While the date of its founding is unknown, archaeological investigations conducted in the 1980s revealed Grubenhaueser from the 7th century and what appears to be continuous occupation since then at least until around the end of the 15th century. The first archival record of the community is from 952. Presently existing houses date back well over a century. In 953 Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor transferred the community, which he had gotten from Graf Billung, to the Moritz Monastery in Magdeburg. The year 1294 is the first year in which there is a reference to the Harste castle. Within a generation, it burned and was restored. Nevertheless, it gradually fell into dis-repair over the next two and a half centuries until it was re-built in 1770. On 29 August 1727, the castle burned but the castle and grounds were re-built the following year, the castle (Domaene)appearing for the first time in substantially the way it now looks.

Three concentration camps operated in succession in Moringen, Lower Saxony, from April 1933 to April 1945. KZ Moringen, established in the centre of the town on site of former 19th century workhouses (German: Landeswerkhäuser), originally housed mostly male political inmates. In November 1933 - March 1938 Moringen housed a women's concentration camp; in June 1940 - April 1945 a juvenile prison. A total of 4,300 people were prisoners of Moringen; an estimated ten percent of them died in the camp.
