It is located in the Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, southeastern France. Created in 2003, its seat is in Carpentras. Its name refers to the Mont Ventoux and the Comtat Venaissin. Its area is 511.6 km2. Its population was 70,298 in 2019, of which 29,236 in Carpentras proper.

It is a small town, with only one paved road running through the middle. It contains little more than a café, a bakery, a hotel, a restaurant, a church, as well as a school.

Saint-Pierre-de-Vassols (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ pjɛʁ də vasɔl]; Provençal: Sant Pèire de Vassòus) is a commune in the Vaucluse département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. Its inhabitants are known as vassoliens (male) and vassoliennes (female). It is the birthplace of Blaise Francois Pagan (1603-1665), a French soldier and military engineer. His work, Les Fortifications, was the dominant text of its era on military fortifications and a significant influence on Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The village is located near Mont Ventoux, often used as a stage on the Tour de France. It is one of the toughest climbs in professional cycling, and British cyclist Tom Simpson died here in 1967. Other tourist attractions include a caravan site.

The Dentelles de Montmirail are a small chain of mountains in Provence in France, in the département of Vaucluse, located just to the south of the village of Vaison-la-Romaine. They are foothills of the highest peak in Provence, Mont Ventoux, which is situated just to the east. The dramatically jagged shape of their peaks was formed by horizontal strata of Jurassic limestone being folded and forced into a nearly upright position and subsequently eroded into sharp-edged ridges and spikes. The highest peak of the Dentelles is St-Amand, at 734 m (2,400 ft). The range, which is about 8 km wide, offers over 600 trails for walking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. The foot of the Dentelles is surrounded by vineyards of the Rhône Valley.
