Achim (German pronunciation: [ˈaxɪm] (listen); Northern Low Saxon: Achem), commonly Achim bei Bremen, is a municipality and the largest town (population 30,059 in December 2006) in the district of Verden, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the right bank of the Weser, approx. 17 km northwest of Verden, and 16 km southeast of Bremen.

Bassen is a district and a village in the municipality Oyten in Lower Saxony. The place is about 20 km east of the city center of Bremen and about 100 km southwest of Hamburg. In the northern area the Wümme flows through Bassen. It has 3,318 inhabitants (2016).

In 1807 the ephemeric Kingdom of Westphalia annexed the Duchy, before France annexed it in 1810. In 1813 the Duchy was restored to the Electorate of Hanover, which - after its upgrade to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814 - incorporated the Duchy in a real union and the Ducal territory, including Oyten, became part of the new Stade Region, established in 1823.

The lake was formed around 12,000 years ago at the retreat of the glacial ice. It has an area of 4.5 ha, and a maximum depth of 11 m.
