The George Hotel is a former 5–star hotel located in Kilmarnock, Scotland. The building was built in the 19th century and is "B" Listed. The building is situated on land at the top of Portland Street. This land was once the home of Kilmarnock Bowling Club. It was one of the top hotels in the area. The George was Kilmarnock's 5-star hotel. The hotel closed in 1920. There were plans for the hotel to be demolished when the Town Council purchased the property, but the plans were changed. The same year as the George Hotel closed part of the building was adapted and used as the George Cinema. The three-story building still remains today. The building still looks similar to the way it did in the days of the George Hotel. Nowadays the building is used by Mason Murphy as a furniture shop and the rest of the property is a disco.

It was established in the Scottish burgh of Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire in 1820, and continued to be produced and bottled at the town's Hill Street plant, once the world's largest bottling plant, until its closure in 2012, a decision announced by Diageo in 2009 which would bring the 190-year association between the brand and Kilmarnock to an end.The brand was first established by grocer John Walker, a native of Kilmarnock, who originally established the business and a grocery shop in 1820, with his son Alexander "Alec" Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II, being largely responsible for establishing the whisky as a favoured brand. It is the world's highest selling Scotch whisky, sold in almost every country, with annual sales of the equivalent of over 223.7 million 700 mL (25 imp fl oz; 24 US fl oz) bottles in 2016 [156,600,000 L (34,400,000 imp gal; 41,400,000 US gal)].

Kilmarnock Cross is a public square in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland . In Rambles Around Kilmarnock (1875) Archibald R Adamson described it as "most spacious, although of a most peculiar form, having no less than seven streets branching off it. In the centre stands a marble statue of Sir James Shaw, who rose from a humble position to that of Lord Mayor of London", the square is part of the area nicknamed "the town" by locals. The seven streets (in clockwise order starting from the north) were Portland Street, Fore Street, Regent Street, Duke Street, Waterloo Street, King Street and Bank Street, and just north of Bank Street, but opening more on to Portland Street than the Cross itself, Croft Street. The heavy traffic in the town led to redevelopments in the 1970s which saw all traffic through this area of the town being stopped completely.

The town has served as the administrative centre of East Ayrshire Council since 1996 and is the regions main commercial and industrial centre.The town grew considerably during the 1870s and the towns growth subsumed the village of Bonnyton, and by the 1960s, new purpose built suburbs such as New Farm Loch were constructed to accommodate the increasing population of Kilmarnock. By mid–2020, the population of the town was estimated to be 46,970, making Kilmarnock the 14th most populated settlement in Scotland as well as the largest town in Ayrshire by population.The first passenger conveying railway in Scotland originated in Kilmarnock in 1812 as a horse-drawn 4 ft-gauge plateway and became known as the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway. The first printed collection of works by Scottish poet Robert Burns was published in 1786 in Kilmarnock. Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, was published by John Wilson, and became known as the Kilmarnock Edition. The internationally best–selling whisky Johnnie Walker was established in the town in the 19th century and was produced and bottled at the Hill Street plant until closure in 2012, following an announcement by owners Diageo in 2009 that the plant would close as part of company restructuring.

On 4 February 2021, three separate fatal incidents occurred in Kilmarnock, Scotland. The incidents were thought to be linked and involved the same 40-year-old man, Steven Robertson. In the first incident, a woman died after being injured outside University Hospital Crosshouse. In the second incident, a woman died after being stabbed in the town. In the third incident, the man was killed in a road crash just off the A76.Armed Police Scotland officers responded to the scene at University Hospital Crosshouse before putting the site under a police lockdown. Police Scotland's Ayrshire division had ruled out any connection to the attacks being related to terrorism.On 5 February 2021, the police confirmed that a woman who had been injured outside University Hospital Crosshouse had died as a result of her injuries, whilst her daughter, a 24-year-old woman, who was stabbed at Portland Street also died as a result of her injuries. The man also later died from his injuries as a result of crashing his car on a road off the A76.The perpetrator, Steven Robertson, was later identified, and it was reported that he killed his ex-wife Emma Coupland, and step-daughter, Nicole Anderson.

Kilmarnock Infirmary was a general hospital in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in Scotland. Opened in 1868, it was designed by renowned Kilmarnock architect William Atkinson Railton. In 1948, the National Health Service (NHS Scotland) was established, meaning Kilmarnock Infirmary had come under national control. Following hospital services for Kilmarnock and the surrounding population being transferred to Crosshouse Hospital in the early 1980s, Kilmarnock Infirmary closed in 1982.

Kilmarnock railway viaduct, known locally as The Viaduct, is a railway viaduct crossing the town centre of Kilmarnock, and was constructed between 1843 and 1850. The bridge begins at Kilmarnock railway station and leads to destinations in England. It is a most distinctive feature of the town centre with 23 masonry arches and defines the northern boundary of the town centre. It was built in the 1840s to enable the Glasgow–Kilmarnock line to continue to Carlisle.The structure is a Category B listed building and is owned by Historic Environment Scotland.

Kilmarnock Academy (Scottish Gaelic: Acadamaidh Chille Mheàrnaig), formerly Kilmarnock Burgh School, is an 11–17 co-educational state-funded secondary school in Kilmarnock, Scotland, currently serving in its third location on Sutherland Drive in the New Farm Loch area of the town. Previous sites for Kilmarnock Academy include Green Street, erected in 1876, and Elmbank Drive, erected in 1898. The school can be traced back to the 1630s when it was known as 'Kilmarnock Burgh School'. In 2022, it was ranked as the 233rd best performing state school in Scotland, an increase from 247th in the 2021 league table rankings.Kilmarnock Academy is one of a few schools in the UK, and the first school in Scotland, to have educated several Nobel laureates: Alexander Fleming, discoverer of penicillin, and John Boyd Orr, 1st Baron Boyd-Orr, for his scientific research into nutrition and his work as the first Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Kilmarnock Academy thus matches Eton College in the number of Nobel laureate graduates.The current head teacher is David Rose who was appointed in June 2015 on an acting basis, and was made permanent Head Teacher of Kilmarnock Academy (the newly formed school following merger with James Hamilton Academy) in April 2017.
