Lagny-sur-Marne

Lagny Abbey (St Peter’s Abbey, Lagny) was a monastery situated in the present-day commune of Lagny-sur-Marne in the department of Seine-et-Marne in France, in the eastern suburbs of Paris. It was founded in 644, refounded about 990 and after well over a millennium of existence (almost 1,150 years) was seized by the state at the French Revolution.

Thorigny-sur-Marne (French pronunciation: [tɔʁiɲi syʁ maʁn] , literally Thorigny on Marne) is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France.

The Lagny-Pomponne rail disaster occurred on 23 December 1933, between Pomponne and Lagny-sur-Marne (48°52′54″N 2°41′47″E), 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Paris, when the 4-8-2 locomotive of the express for Strasbourg crashed at 110 km/h (65 mph) into the rear of an auxiliary train bound for Nancy, which was stopped on the railway. The impact crushed and splintered the last five cars of the Nancy train, older wooden cars pressed into service for the holidays. Both trains were full of people going home to their families for Christmas. 204 people died and 120 were injured. It is second to the worst railway disaster in French history, after the 1917 Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne derailment, and the deadliest ever in peacetime.

Writer Marcel Proust adopted its name for the origin of the Guermantes family in À la recherche du temps perdu. Proust Scholar Joshua Landy points out that the only reason Proust "used it in his novel is that no living members of the family remained.”

Conches-sur-Gondoire (French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ːʃ syʁ ɡɔ̃dwaːʁ] ) is a commune on the Gondoire river in Brie, in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It is roughly 13 miles (21 km) from Paris. Its remarkable sights include a monastery church of the 12th century, and a Second Empire castle. Until 1993, Conches-sur-Gondoire was simply called Conches. The name of the river was added to distinguish it from Conches-en-Ouche in Normandy (Eure county).
