Oliveira do Mondego

Oliveira do Mondego e Travanca do Mondego is a civil parish in the municipality of Penacova, Portugal. It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Oliveira do Mondego and Travanca do Mondego. The population in 2011 was 1,079, in an area of 22.58 km2.

Raiva Dam (Portuguese: Barragem da Raiva, also known as Barragem do Coiço) is a concrete gravity dam on the Mondego. It is located in the municipality Penacova, in Coimbra District, Portugal. The dam was completed in 1981. It is owned by Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE). The dam is used for power generation and flood control.

Alva River (Portuguese: Rio Alva, Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈalvɐ]) is a river in Portugal. It flows into the Mondego River. The river Alva is a mountain river, tributary of the Mondego, rising on the southwest slope of the Serra da Estrela and running about 110 kilometres (68 mi) until draining into the river Mondego, which occurs in the town of Porto de Raiva, parish of Oliveira do Mondego, Municipality of Penacova In the District of Coimbra, after the Mondego is interrupted by the Aguieira Dam. The bed follows a winding path between the slopes of the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Açor, where it has dug its course. Several localities have grown along the banks of the river, as well as many river beaches such as those at Sandomil, São Gião, Caldas de São Paulo, São Sebastião da Feira, Avô, Côja, and Secarias, as the river approaches the Fronhas Dam. The Alva river is crossed in São Martinho da Cortiça with the Fronhas Dam after having covered approximately 89 kilometres (55 mi). This dam had the maximum discharge around 500 m³ / s. It is a river known to have a very high variation in its flow, since it has a very low flow in the summer, and very high in the winter. This is mainly due to the variation of precipitation during the year, and the absence of this in the summer, but also to the fact that the flow of the river is controlled to a great extent by the water system, and snow falling in the Serra da Estrela.

The Abbey of Our Lady of Lorvão (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Lorvão), known simply as Lorvão Abbey, was a monastery in the civil parish of Lorvão in the Coimbra District of Portugal. According to tradition, it was founded in the 6th century, but no documentation of the foundation exists until the late 9th century, the period of the Christian Reconquest of the lands, which had then been held by Muslim conquerors for over 150 years. It served a monastic community for a thousand years. Originally housing a community of monks, it initially prospered as a major point of trade between the Christian inhabitants to its north and the Muslim kingdoms to its south. During the 12th century, its workshops were noted for their magnificent illuminated manuscripts. Soon after that, its monks were removed and the monastery became the home of a community of nuns. They occupied the site until the abolition of religious orders in Portugal during the 19th century. At the start of the 20th century, the buildings were converted into a psychiatric hospital, at the same time being declared a National Monument of the country. The hospital lasted a century and the government is currently developing the property into a museum of the sacred arts under the supervision of the architect João Mendes Ribeiro.
