Palazzo Giordano a Via Medina, Naples

The Palazzo d'Aquino di Caramanico in central Naples, Italy, is a Palace located on via Medina in the Quartiere San Giuseppe of Rione Carita. It is flanked by the contemporary Palazzo Giordano and two doors down from the tall modern NH Ambassador Hotel. The Rococo architect Ferdinando Fuga worked on construction during 1775 and 1780 of this palace (and played a large role in the design of the adjacent Palazzo Giordano. The interior was frescoed by Giovanni Funaro and Nicola Malinconico. During 1927, the palace became offices of the Fascist party.

The Palazzo della Questura (Police Headquarters) of Naples, Italy, is a building located on Via Medina and Via Armando Diaz. ALong Via Medina, it is located adjacent to the tall modern NH Ambassador hotel, and two doors north from the Baroque Palazzo Giordano. North of the Questura is the contemporary, and equally imposing, Palazzo delle Poste. The building is an example of Fascist architecture, built in 1935-1938 to be the new headquarters of the police. Work ceased in February, 1939, due to inability to obtain iron building materials, due to the re-arming of the country, and international embargoes, and inauguration delayed till 1940. The style is severe and monumental, imposing an unharmonious and somewhat bullying facade relative to older nearby buildings. The words QVESTVRA recall Latin script popular with fascists, seeking to associate a resurgent Italy with Roman past. Flanking the portal, there was originally two reliefs depicting the Kingdom of Italy and the fascist eagle. Both were replaced by the symbol of the Italian Republic, the broken wheel. There are still symbols such as fasces and eagles that remain as part of the integral decoration.

San Diego all'Ospedaletto, also known as San Giuseppe Maggiore, is a Baroque-style church located on via Medina in the rione Carità in Naples, Italy. It is located across the street from the tall modern NH Ambassador Hotel and diagonal from the Palazzo Giordano and Questura. The name of San Giuseppe Maggiore derives from a church of that name belonging to Arciconfraternity of the Mannesi (i falegnami), that was demolished nearby in the 16th century. The church was commissioned by Giovanna Castriota in 1514, a lady of the court of Giovanna III dei Castriota. It became a hospital for the poor, and later passed on to the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor. The present building was reconstructed in 1595 and dedicated to Saint Diego of Alcalá. The original nave was frescoed by Battistello Caracciolo, Andrea Vaccaro, and Massimo Stanzione. Only the former's frescoed escaped destruction during the earthquake of 1688. The canvas by Stanzione of the Transit of St Joseph remains in the last chapel on right. Vaccaro painted a canvas of St Anthony of Padua in the church. The polychrome marble altar was designed by Giovan Battista Nauclerio and completed by Giuseppe de Filippo. On the counterfacade is a marble tomb (1703) of the Prince Piombini, by Giacomo Colombo, using designs by Francesco Solimena.

San Giorgio dei Genovesi (or San Giorgio alla Commedia Vecchia) is a church on Via Medina in the Center of Naples, Italy. It is adjacent and just north of the Church of the Santa Maria Incoronata, two doors south from the Palazzo d’Aquino di Caramanico, and across the street from the Church of the Pietà dei Turchini. The church was designed in the early 17th century based on designs by Bartolomeo Picchiatti. The original name derives from its attachment to the Genoese community in Naples. The interior is a Latin Cross plan with abundant stucco decoration and a cupola. The interior has a Caravaggesque painting of St Anthony resurrects a dead man by Battistello Caracciolo. The third chapel on right has frescoes (1770) by Giacomo Cestaro and a painting depicting St George slays the Dragon by Andrea da Salerno. The altar has a marble relief of Sant'Agostino of the 17th century Tuscan school. The facade of the church is simple. The alternate name indicates the church was built at the site of the Neapolitan Commedia dell'arte Theater of the Commedia Vecchia.

The church of the Graziella al Porto Napoli or Santa Maria delle Grazie al Porto Napoli is a small Roman Catholic temple in Naples, Italy. The church is just behind the church of Pietà dei Turchini, on vico Graziella al Porto. It is accessible through narrow alleys from via Medina, along the church of San Diego dell’Ospedaletto and the former Royal Conservatory, but also by a pedestrian alleys from via Guglielmo San Felice and via De Pretis. It is located in the rione San Giuseppe Carità. In 1737, the architect Angelo Carasale, in order to signal his gratitude to the providence granted by the Virgin, decided to erect this church, initially named Santa Maria delle Grazie. Angelo Carasale had found success when he was granted direction of the Teatro San Bartolomeo by King Charles III. The church was in the custody of the Mercedarian order until 1801, when it was transferred to the Confraternity of Santi Bernardo e Margherita. That group merged in 1859 with the Confraternity of Santa Maria Visita Poveri. Since the 1980 Irpinia earthquake the church has remained closed, like many other nearby churches including Santa Barbara dei Cannonieri and San Giacomo degli Italiani. The main altar has a canvas of the Virgin granting a banner to San Pietro Nolasco by Giuseppe Bonito and two lateral canvases Madonna and San Carlo Borromeo also by Bonito, and a Crucifixion by M. Rossi. San Pietro Nolasco was the founder of the Mercedarian order.

Santa Maria dell'Incoronata is an ancient church on Via Medina in Naples, Italy. It is located just south of San Giorgio dei Genovesi and across the street from the Church of Pietà dei Turchini. The church was built in the 14th century in Gotico Angioiano style as part of urban project around the Castel Nuovo, the royal palace of Charles II of Anjou. The church was founded in 1364, not as tradition holds, in memory of the coronation of Joanna I of Naples and her second marriage to Louis, Prince of Taranto, but to hold a precious relic, a spine from the thorny crown of Christ, which the queen had requested from Charles V of France, and whose portrait is kept in the entrance. The edification of the Palace chapel or cappella palatina outside of the Castle, was completed in a difficult moment for the Queen, after the death of her husband in 1362. In 1403 Ladislaus of Naples ordered the painting of a cycle of Saint Ladislaus' legend in the church (finished 1414). There the Hungarian king is depicted receiving the royal crown, also fighting against the pagans, and receiving the crown of Croatia. Originally a small hospital was constructed attached to the church, and the entire complex was under the jurisdiction of the Carthusian Monastery of San Martino, till the end of the 16th century. The church was reconsecrated in the 18th century, after years of disuse, and restored over the centuries. However the interior has been stripped on most of its former Baroque decoration.

The Church of Pietà dei Turchini is a religious building in Naples, Italy. A smaller church, located on Rua Catalana, was built originally in 1592–1595 by the Confraternity of the Incoronatella. This church was nearly destroyed by an explosion in the Castel Nuovo in 1638. It was rebuilt in 1638–1639, and retitled Santa Maria Incoronatella della Pietà dei Turchini when it acquired a dome. The facade was completed in 1769–70 by Bartolomeo Vecchione.

The Palazzo della Casa del Mutilato (Palace of the House of the Mutilated) is a building, located on via Guantai Nuovi and via Diaz, in piazza Matteotti in Naples, Italy. It is an example of the Fascist architecture constructed during the rule of Benito Mussolini, just like the large convex-facade of the central post office building (Palazzo delle Poste) across the street. The Casa del Mutilato building was constructed from 1938 to 1940 for the Associazione Nazionale fra Mutilati ed Invalidi di Guerra (National Association of Soldiers Mutilated and Invalid from War). It was inaugurated after the start of the second world war. The building design was commissioned from Camillo Guerra. The predilection of the word Mutilato as opposed to invalidi (invalid) or feriti (wounded) or offeso (injured) is not lacking of connotation. It is true that amputation or unrepairable injuries were more common during the first world war than our present conflicts, and thus the residual observations of the wounded included "mutilated" individuals, however, there was a fascist attachment to Gabrielle D'Annunzio historical assessment of the results of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference for Italy as a Vittoria Mutilata (Mutilated victory), and that this idea fueled the rise of nationalism. Thus the term "mutilato" would have had more positive resonance to the followers of fascism. Multiple such Casa del Mutilato were established in Italy to service the thousands of wounded soldiers. The exterior is modern and stern in its predominance of stone. The entrance at the corner has a frame of stone panels, sculpted by Vico Consorti and Giuseppe Pellegrini. The atrium has a monumental entry staircase surmounted by a statue of Victory. The interior still contains decorations that recall the fascist party. Similar office buildings were built during the Mussolini era in Milan and Ravenna.

The Fountain of Neptune (Italian: Fontana del Nettuno) is a monumental fountain, located in Municipio square, in Naples, Italy. The fountain until the end of 2014 was located across the street of via Medina across from the church of Santa Maria Incoronata, Naples and a few doors south of the church complex of Pieta di Turchini. Now the fountain is located in front of the Town hill building, its location changed due to the construction of the new underground station (Municipio Station - Line 1).

Santi Pietro e Paolo dei Greci (Greek: Άγιοι Πέτρος και Παύλος των Ελλήνων, romanized: Ágioi Pétros kai Pávlos ton Ellínon, lit. 'Saints Peter and Paul of the Greeks') is a church at the Campania, the historic center of Naples, in Via San Tommaso d'Aquino 51. It was the center of the Scuola dei Greci in Naples and the Confraternity of the Greeks in Naples. Around this period there was a similar church in Venice called San Giorgio dei Greci. There was also a Greek Brotherhood of Venice. A prominent member of the Greek Brotherhood was famous painter Belisario Corenzio. The church was initially dedicated to the Twelve Apostles. They began building the church at the request of one of the descendants of the Byzantine Empire Thomas Asen Palaiologos. The church currently belongs to the Greek State.

Santa Maria la Nova is a Renaissance style, now-deconsecrated, Roman Catholic church and monastery in central Naples. The church is located at the beginning of a side street directly across from the east side of the main post office, a few blocks south of the Church and Monastery of Santa Chiara. Today the adjacent monastery is a meeting site and hosts the Museo ARCA of modern religious art.

The Palazzo delle Poste (Italian: "Post Office Palace") is located in Piazza Matteotti in central Naples. It is an example of architecture completed during the fascist government of Benito Mussolini. Another such example is the nearby Palazzo della Casa del Mutilato and the adjacent Palazzo della Questura (Police Headquarters) on via Medina. Just north and across the street on via Monteoliveto is the 16th-century Palazzo Orsini di Gravina. To make way for the building, houses from the rione of San Giuseppe-Carità were demolished in 1930. Construction began in 1928 under Costanzo Ciano, head of the Ministry of Communications; when finally completed in 1936, it was inaugurated by the then minister Antonio Stefano Benni. The design was by the Bolognese architect Giuseppe Vaccaro, and was influenced by the Rationalist style of Italian architecture promoted by Marcello Piacentini. The architect Gino Franzi modified and completed the final building. The design incorporated the adjacent cloister of Monteoliveto into the complex. On October 7, 1943, a few days after the Four Days of Naples, the Palazzo delle Poste suffered a violent explosion, leaving many people dead or wounded. It is thought that the building had been mined with timed fuses by the retreating German army.The attic now has a museum in honor of Vincenzo Tucci, a journalist for Il Mattino. In the lobby, which rises nearly the full height of the building, there is a sculpture dedicated to the "fallen" by Arturo Martini.
