Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain railway

Ruderbach railway station (German: Bahnhof Ruderbach) is a railway station in St. Margrethen, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is the only intermediate station on the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain rack railway line of Appenzell Railways.

Rheineck railway station (German: Bahnhof Rheineck) is a railway station that serves the municipality of Rheineck, in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The station is located on the eastern edge of Rheineck village centre, with the A1 motorway, the Alter Rhein river channel and then the border with Austria flanking the opposite side of the station.The station is an intermediate stop on the St. Margrethen–Rorschach railway line, and is the lower terminus of the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain railway. It is served by St. Gallen S-Bahn services S2, S4, and S5, which link Rheineck to the city of St. Gallen and other local towns, and by service S26, which shuttles up to Walzenhausen. Rheineck is also the easterly end of the Swiss shipping services on Lake Constance, and the town's landing stages are located on the Alter Rhein channel. The landing stages are linked to the station by a pedestrian subway under the A1 motorway. Local bus services operate from a bus station adjacent to the station building.The station has two side platforms, on either side of the twin track main line. The station building abuts the western platform, and is linked to the eastern platform by a pedestrian subway. The Rheineck–Walzenhausen line starts from its own platform, which is actually located on the western mainline platform.

The Alter Rhein (German pronunciation: [ˈaltɐ ˈʁaɪ̯n] ; German for Old Rhine) is the old river bed of the Alpine Rhine in St. Gallen and Vorarlberg in the Alpine Rhine Valley, which was cut off when the Rhine was straightened during the 20th century. These cut-off arms have become valuable recreational areas and a nature reserve. In 1900, the short-cut at Fussach was completed, linking the natural course of the Rhine just upstream of Höchst and St. Margrethen directly to a new outflow into Lake Constance. The old river course downstream of this point, via Rheineck to Altenrhein on the shore of Lake Constance, became known as the Alter Rhein and continues to form the border between Austria and Switzerland. The arm is navigable from the lake to Rheineck, and is used by the Swiss shipping services on the lake to reach landing stages adjacent to Rheineck railway station. In 1906, the Rheintaler Binnenkanal ("Rhine Valley Inland Canal") was dug, connecting Sennwald to St. Margrethen. In 1923, another short-cut was completed at Diepoldsau, creating another dead branch, also named Alter Rhein. The area between the Old and New Rhine forms the nature reserve Rhine Delta (not to be confused with the Rhine Delta in the Netherlands).
