Walzenhausen railway station (German: Bahnhof Walzenhausen) is a railway station in Walzenhausen, in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It is the terminus of the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain rack railway line of Appenzell Railways.

The Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain railway (German: Bergbahn Rheineck–Walzenhausen; RhW) is a 1.9 kilometres (1.18 mi) long rack railway in Switzerland. It links Rheineck station, in the municipality of Rheineck and the canton of St Gallen, with the village and health resort of Walzenhausen, in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Passenger service on the line now forms part of the St. Gallen S-Bahn, branded as the S26.The line is owned and operated by the Appenzell Railways company, which also operates several other railway lines in the two Appenzell cantons.

Ruderbach railway station (German: Bahnhof Ruderbach) is a railway station in St. Margrethen, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is the only intermediate station on the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain rack railway line of Appenzell Railways.

Grimmenstein Monastery is a monastery of Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Walzenhausen in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland. While it is located in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the buildings and grounds are a small exclave of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.

Rheineck railway station (German: Bahnhof Rheineck) is a railway station that serves the municipality of Rheineck, in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The station is located on the eastern edge of Rheineck village centre, with the A1 motorway, the Alter Rhein river channel and then the border with Austria flanking the opposite side of the station.The station is an intermediate stop on the St. Margrethen–Rorschach railway line, and is the lower terminus of the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain railway. It is served by St. Gallen S-Bahn services S2, S4, and S5, which link Rheineck to the city of St. Gallen and other local towns, and by service S26, which shuttles up to Walzenhausen. Rheineck is also the easterly end of the Swiss shipping services on Lake Constance, and the town's landing stages are located on the Alter Rhein channel. The landing stages are linked to the station by a pedestrian subway under the A1 motorway. Local bus services operate from a bus station adjacent to the station building.The station has two side platforms, on either side of the twin track main line. The station building abuts the western platform, and is linked to the eastern platform by a pedestrian subway. The Rheineck–Walzenhausen line starts from its own platform, which is actually located on the western mainline platform.

Heerbrugg Castle (German: Schloss Heerbrugg) is a privately owned castle located in Heerbrugg, St. Gallen, Switzerland. It was built in 1775 by wealthy merchant Bartholomäus Schlumpf, on the Herrenbrugg über die Aich estate (where remnants of an original fort dating back to 1077 laid). In 1774, the original estate burnt down in a fire, and Schlumpf acquired it. He not only bought the land but also the rights that came with it. He also owned a farmhouse, acreage and forestry. In 1775, he commissioned the castle to be rebuilt, as it stands today. In 1792, he sold the castle to Captain Custer of Altstätten for 16,000 Guilders. In 1833, a brother-in-law, German-born Karl Völker, originally from Eisenach, acquired it and used it as a boarding school. Between 1867 and 2005 it was owned by the Schmidheiny family before being sold to Leo von Rotz and his brother Peter von Rotz. Since 2006, it is solely owned by Peter von Rotz.

The Alter Rhein (German pronunciation: [ˈaltɐ ˈʁaɪ̯n] ; German for Old Rhine) is the old river bed of the Alpine Rhine in St. Gallen and Vorarlberg in the Alpine Rhine Valley, which was cut off when the Rhine was straightened during the 20th century. These cut-off arms have become valuable recreational areas and a nature reserve. In 1900, the short-cut at Fussach was completed, linking the natural course of the Rhine just upstream of Höchst and St. Margrethen directly to a new outflow into Lake Constance. The old river course downstream of this point, via Rheineck to Altenrhein on the shore of Lake Constance, became known as the Alter Rhein and continues to form the border between Austria and Switzerland. The arm is navigable from the lake to Rheineck, and is used by the Swiss shipping services on the lake to reach landing stages adjacent to Rheineck railway station. In 1906, the Rheintaler Binnenkanal ("Rhine Valley Inland Canal") was dug, connecting Sennwald to St. Margrethen. In 1923, another short-cut was completed at Diepoldsau, creating another dead branch, also named Alter Rhein. The area between the Old and New Rhine forms the nature reserve Rhine Delta (not to be confused with the Rhine Delta in the Netherlands).
