Bad Arolsen (German: [baːt ˈʔaːʁɔlzn̩] , until 1997 Arolsen, Bad being the German name for Spa) is a small town in northern Hesse, Germany, in Waldeck-Frankenberg district. From 1655 until 1918 it served as the residence town of the Princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont and then until 1929 as the capital of the Waldeck Free State. The International Tracing Service has its headquarters in Bad Arolsen.

The County of Waldeck (later the Principality of Waldeck and Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont) was a state of the Holy Roman Empire and its successors from the late 12th century until 1929. In 1349 the county gained Imperial immediacy and in 1712 was raised to the rank of principality. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 it was a constituent state of its successors: the Confederation of the Rhine, the German Confederation, the North German Confederation, and the German Empire. After the abolition of the monarchy in 1918, the renamed Free State of Waldeck-Pyrmont became a component of the Weimar Republic until divided between Hannover and other Prussian provinces in 1929. It comprised territories in present-day Hesse and Lower Saxony (Germany).

Mengeringhausen is a village and a municipal district of Bad Arolsen in Waldeck-Frankenberg, in Hesse, Germany. Its population is estimated to be 3,800 people. It was first mentioned as the town 'Stadt Mengeringhausen' in 1234. The town was in possession of sovereign principality Waldeck (later Waldeck and Pyrmont). In 1974, Mengeringhausen was incorporated to the city Bad Arolsen.

Hofbrauhaus Arolsen or Royal Brewery Arolsen is the oldest brewery in the Hesse federal state, located in Bad Arolsen town, Germany. Recent company name is "Hofbrauhaus Heinrich Brüne GmbH & Co. KG" and from 1910 is run by 4th generation of the Brüne family. Beer was originally produced for the "Aroldessen" (old name for Arolsen) monastery and then for the court of the Count of Waldeck before city of Arolsen was founded.

Arolsen Castle (German: Residenzschloss Arolsen) is a baroque-style schloss in Bad Arolsen, Hesse, Germany. The castle is now a museum, and is still inhabited by Wittekind, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his family. As a result, it continues to serve as a residence of the former ruling family of the Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont. It was the birthplace of Princess Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont, who became the Queen consort of the Netherlands during the late 19th century.

Volkmarsen [ˈfɔlkˌmaʁzn̩] is a small town in Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse, Germany. It is home to 6840 residents.

On 24 February 2020, a man rammed his car against a crowd at a carnival parade in Volkmarsen, Hesse, Germany, injuring 88 people. In total, 150 people were considered "negatively affected or traumatized by the incident", and it was later described to the courts as a "miracle" that no one had been killed. The attack came only days after a terrorist attack in Hanau. The perpetrator, 29-year-old Maurice Pahler, was found to have filmed and extensively planned the attack. In 2021, Pahler was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder with a particular severity of guilt, meaning that he would not be automatically eligible for parole. He refused to give any motive or reasoning for the crime.
