Spring Valley Township is a township in Cherokee County, Kansas, USA. As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,007.

The Rainbow Bridge is an old bridge over Brush Creek approximately two miles west of Riverton, Kansas on former U.S. Route 66 (US-66), now a county road. The bridge is a single-span concrete Marsh arch bridge and is the sole surviving bridge of this type on the entire length of the former highway. Two other Marsh arch bridges were also located on US-66 in Kansas, both over the Spring River. It was built in 1923. The bridge has often been covered with graffiti, but was recently re-painted white. The bridge has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places (as the Brush Creek Bridge) on March 10, 1983, due to its connection with US-66 and is also a Kansas state landmark. In 2014, Kansas Rt. 66 Historic Byway nominated a bypassed 2.1 miles (3.4 km) section of original 1926 highway, which ran south from the Brush Creek to the Willow Creek bridge near Baxter Springs, for an NRHP listing.The bridge is fairly narrow, and due to traffic on the road, a replacement bridge has been built. The road curves toward the new bridge toward Baxter Springs, but a short, one-way road carries traffic to the Rainbow Bridge, which may still be crossed. This was part of a compromise after a disagreement between the county and the Kansas Route 66 Association as federal funds used for construction of the new bridge required demolition of the old. The bridge had been listed with the National Register, which prohibited condemnation of the old bridge.In the year 2000, country singer Brad Paisley performed "Route 66" on the bridge for the TLC special, "Route 66: Main Street America".

The Columbus Public Carnegie Library is a Carnegie library located at 205 N. Kansas in Columbus, Kansas. The library was built in 1913 through a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie foundation. George P. Washburn & Son designed the building in the Classical Revival style. The red brick building's facade is made up of three bays. The building's entrance pavilion features a wooden entablature reading "PUBLIC LIBRARY"; the entablature encircles the building. The doorway is topped by a glass transom with a triangular pattern and a limestone lintel.The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1987.

The Cherokee County Courthouse, located at 110 West Maple Street in Columbus, is the seat of government of Cherokee County, Kansas. Columbus has been the county seat since 1868. The courthouse was built from 1955 to 1956 by contractor Baumann Construction Company. Architect Glover and Newcomb of Topeka, Kansas designed the courthouse in the Modern style. The courthouse is three stories and faces north. It is constructed of yellow- and orange-colored brick, stone, and concrete with a flat roof. It is located on landscaped grounds in the center of the city. The front has a clock centered above the entrance approximately at the mid point between the first and second stories; northeast of the entrance, adjacent to the sidewalk is the clock from the 1888 courthouse. The current courthouse is technically the fourth structure used as a courthouse. The first courthouse was a rented house on the public square. The first building erected as a courthouse was built in 1871. The second courthouse was built in 1888 by C. C. Wenzell and Schrage & Nicholas. The first Cherokee County Courthouse was located at Pleasant View, Kansas (1855-1868) and the second county courthouse was located at Baxter Springs (1867-1868). The city of Baxter Springs erected a building in 1872 to be used as a courthouse, but it never served that purpose. It is still standing and named Johnson Library.

The Battle of Baxter Springs, more commonly known as the Baxter Springs Massacre, was a minor battle of the American Civil War fought on 6 October 1863, near the present-day town of Baxter Springs, Kansas. In late 1863, Quantrill's Raiders, a large band of pro-Confederate bushwhackers led by William Quantrill, was traveling south through Kansas along the Texas Road to winter in Texas. Numbering about 400, this group captured and killed two Union teamsters who had come from a small Federal Army post called Fort Baxter (frequently referred to as Fort Blair). The bushwhackers assaulted the fort but were repulsed, eventually retreating to the prairie, where they attacked a separate Union column, leaving only a few survivors.

Riverton is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 771. It is located at the junction of K-66 (former U.S. Route 66) and U.S. Route 69 Alternate and U.S. Route 400, near the Spring River. It is one of only three communities in Kansas along former U.S. Route 66.

The Johnston Library is a historic library located at 210 W. 10th St. in Baxter Springs, Kansas. The building was constructed in 1872 to serve as a courthouse during Baxter Springs' unsuccessful attempt to become the Cherokee County seat. Though Baxter Springs had lost an election to choose the county seat in 1869 to Columbus, supporters of both cities had attempted to fraudulently swing the election in their favor, and Baxter Springs hoped it could still become county seat in the future. The building initially served as the county jail and sheriff's office until Columbus completed its jail in 1880. After this, Baxter Springs ultimately gave up its attempts to become the county seat, and the building became its city hall. In 1905, resident Niles P. Johnston bequeathed $5,000 to the city to start a library, and the city hall building was chosen to house it.The two-story brick building's design is a mixture of the Classical Revival and Richardsonian Romanesque styles. Key features of both styles appear in the library's main entrance; its pediment and pilasters are typical Classical Revival elements, while the Syrian arch doorway is a Richardsonian Romanesque feature. The library also includes a gable roof and a cornice with ornamental corbels and brackets.The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1976.
