Lander College Old Main Building

Lander University is a public university in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Greenwood is a city in and the county seat of Greenwood County, South Carolina. The population in the 2020 United States Census was 22,545 down from 23,222 at the 2010 census. The city is home to Lander University.

Vance-Maxwell House, also known as the Maxwell-Nicholson-Murphy House, is a historic home located at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It was built around 1850, and remodeled between 1898 and 1904 in the Second Empire style. During the remodeling, a full second story and a mansard roof were added to the original 1+1⁄2-story central hall farmhouse. The house is associated with Dr. John C. Maxwell, a locally prominent physician, military surgeon during the American Civil War, politician, and philanthropist. In 1891 Dr. Maxwell and his wife helped establish the Connie Maxwell Orphanage in Greenwood named for the only child of the Maxwell's to survive infancy.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.The home last sold in September 2017. The new owners are now restoring the home to its Second Empire Victorian glamour, to regain the legacy of the Maxwell family. Although it has been claimed by past owners, there are no negative spiritual forces at work in the home.

The Museum & Railroad Historical Center of Greenwood is located in Greenwood, South Carolina. It offers a collection and interpretation of the history of the Lakelands region of South Carolina, especially Greenwood County. The Museum was established in 1967 by James West Durst with the help of Bill Pittendreigh and Congressman William Jennings Bryan Dorn, and other community volunteers. The Museum opened to the public in 1970 with one room of displays in an old armory building on Phoenix Street. The museum moved in 1982 to the current facility at 106 Main Street, next to the Greenwood Theatre and former Federal Post Office. In 2000 the Railroad Historical Center donated its equipment and railway memorabilia to The Museum, creating the Museum and Railroad Historical Center. In 2015 the Museum received state funding to restore the locomotive and 5 passenger cars and a caboose. 3 of those items are from Greenwood's own "Piedmont & Northern Railway", of 4 surviving in the country. The P&N was an electric railway started by Southern Electric Co (Duke Power/Energy now) and moved passengers with interurbans (like the museum's 2102) between Greenwood & Spartanburg as well as an unconnected segment between Charlotte and Gastonia. The plan was to connect the lines by the Southern Railway (U.S.) used its power to block the connection, requiring freight travelling between the 2 segments to pass over Southern rails. The railroad center is open for tours for $5.00 on Saturdays May–September, or by appointment in advance, and tour guides take visitors through a 1906 steam engine, 1914 interurban, 1937 "American Flyer" coach, 1924 Lackawanna "Diner-Lounge", a 1942 Pullman Sleeper "American Liberty", and a vintage P&N caboose. Visitors also are allowed into the Piedmont & Northern's Business Car No 2101 "Carolina" built in 1914 and filled with mahogany and brass, used by the P&N board members, such as Mr James Self, and President Frank Cothran. A business car or office car was a 20th-century version of a private jet with the luxury and prestige of a yacht. The only other surviving P&N item is an electric freight locomotive at North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. The railroad portion is located at 906 and 908 South Main Street. The Museum is restoring a 1953 "Cinderella Coach" at the 106 facility for special photograph events. The coach was built in 1953 for a parade organized by Greenwood's social club ladies.

Greenwood Community Theatre, or GCT, is a non-profit theatre in Greenwood, South Carolina. Greenwood Community Theatre officially began in 1954. GCT reopened in January 2007 after an extensive 1.2 million dollar renovation offering live theatre in the form of musicals, comedies, dramas, classic films, Indie films, music concerts, forum, debates and many rentals to local and touring organizations and businesses.

Old Greenwood Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. Established around the year 1860, the Old Greenwood Cemetery is a historic burial place in the said city. It is significant because of being the oldest cemetery in the area. This being said, it has also become the resting place for many prominent figures in the locale.The Old Greenwood Cemetery was built as a graveyard for the old Main Street Methodist Church. It was laid out in the original site of the said church with an acre and a half of land area. It contains about 350 graves of pioneers and locals. The descendants of the people buried on the Old Greenwood Cemetery mostly take responsibility in caring for the site. They work hard to keep vandals away and maintain the site the best that they can. The cemetery was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Magnolia Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It was established in 1871, and is laid out in a regular grid plan. It contains approximately 1,600 to 1,800 graves. Grave markers are primarily granite or marble tablets, obelisks, square, or stepped monuments capped with urns. There also are several Confederate grave markers, some of which still feature cast iron Maltese crosses. A Gothic-influenced granite shelter was added in 1922.The cemetery was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Mt. Pisgah A. M.E. Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal church located at Hackett Avenue and James Street in Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It was built in 1908, and is a brick Gothic Revival-style church. It features a steep, cross-gabled roof with stepped end gables, asymmetrical massing, and pointed stained glass windows.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.Congregants have included US Congressman Jim Clyburn and state representative James Felder.

Old Greenwood High School is a historic high school building located at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It was designed by the firm of Wilson, Berryman & Kennedy and built in 1925–1926. It is a complex of three brick buildings – the main building, the auditorium, and the gymnasium – each of which is in the Georgian Revival style and form a Palladian configuration. Each of the three buildings features a portico supported by six Tuscan order columns. The complex was completed with construction of the gymnasium building in 1929–1930.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

James C. Self House is a historic home in Greenwood, South Carolina, designed by local architect Thomas White Cothran (1874-1923) for textile magnate and philanthropist James Cuthbert Self (1876-1955) and built in 1917–1918. The house is a two-story, brick veneer Neoclassical style dwelling with a green Spanish tile hipped roof. It sits on a brick foundation faced with rock and an Ionic order portico that projects from the three central bays. The property includes a smokehouse/wellhouse and garage.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Sunnyside is a historic home located at Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina. It was built in 1851, and is a 1 1/2-half story house modeled after Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving. It has flush board siding covering the front façade and weatherboard siding covering the remainder of the house. It is basically Gothic Revival in style, featuring a gabled roof and dormers with scalloped bargeboard. It features a Greek Revival style portico.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Greenwood Mall, formerly Crosscreek Mall, is a regional shopping mall located in Greenwood, South Carolina, United States. The mall opened in 1979 and underwent a number of expansions and renovations throughout its history. The original anchor stores were Belk, JCPenney, and Meyers-Arnold, with H. J. Wilson Co. joining in the 1980s. The latter two stores became Uptons and Service Merchandise respectively in the 1980s. Following the closure of those stores, the mall was purchased by a new owner in 2000 and renamed three years later to Greenwood Mall. Renovations beginning in 2009 added The Shoe Dept., TJ Maxx, and Michaels among other stores. Despite these additions, the mall continued to struggle with vacancy, compounded by the closure of JCPenney in 2019. The remaining anchor stores are Belk and TJ Maxx. Hull Property Group owns the mall.
