The Black River is a 151-mile-long (243 km) blackwater river in South Carolina in the United States. It courses through Lee, Sumter, Clarendon, and Williamsburg counties before merging with the Great Pee Dee River in Georgetown County. The river was called the Wee Nee by the Native Americans who once inhabited the area. In June 2001, a 75-mile segment of the river was designated a State Scenic River.

Mansfield Plantation is a well-preserved antebellum rice plantation, established in 1718 on the banks of the Black River in historic Georgetown County, South Carolina.

Beneventum Plantation House, originally known as Prospect Hill Plantation, is a historic plantation house located near Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. It was built about 1750, and is a two-story, five-bay, Georgian style house. It features a one-story portico across the center two-thirds of the façade. The rear half of the house was added about 1800, with further rear additions made probably early-20th century. It was the home of Christopher Gadsden, a prominent statesmen and soldier of the American Revolution, the originator of the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, and Federalist Party leader in the early national period.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is now a private residence with no visitation. There is a state historical marker on the public right of way on Beneventum Road.

Keithfield Plantation is a historic rice plantation property and national historic district located near Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 1 contributing building, 1 contributing site, and 3 contributing structures. They include a slave cabin, built about 1830, and agricultural features including examples of historic ricefields, canals, dikes, and trunks. The original main house burned in the mid-20th century. Keithfield was one of several productive rice plantations on the Black River.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

South Carolina's 1st congressional district is a coastal congressional district in South Carolina, represented by Republican Nancy Mace since January 3, 2021. She succeeded Democrat Joe Cunningham, having defeated him in the 2020 election. Cunningham was the first Democrat to represent the district since the 1980s. The district has historically been based in Charleston. It has included Myrtle Beach, which became a major tourist destination in the late 20th century, as well as other coastal areas that have attracted retirees and seasonal visitors. From 1993 to 2013, the district boundaries extended from Seabrook Island in the south to the North Carolina border and included parts of Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley and Georgetown counties and all of Horry County to the North Carolina line. In 2010, the state received another seat in Congressional apportionment due to an increase in population. The state's districts had to be redrawn, which was completed in 2013. In the final plan, the 1st congressional district was redrawn to reach from Hilton Head to mid-coast South Carolina, ending at the Santee River and comprising parts of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester and Beaufort counties. This configuration is similar to the one it had for most of the 20th century. Horry County was included in the new 7th congressional district. On January 6, 2023, the district was declared unconstitutional on account of racial gerrymandering and would have to be redrawn April of that year. The Supreme Court justices added Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP to their merits calendar for the 2023–24 term. At least fifteen amicus briefs were filed by various organizations and individuals with standing before the court. The case was argued on October 11, 2023, with a decision pending in 2024.

Arcadia Plantation, originally known as Prospect Hill Plantation, is a historic plantation house located near Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The main portion of the house was built about 1794, as a two-story clapboard structure set upon a raised brick basement in the late-Georgian style. In 1906 Captain Isaac Edward Emerson, the "Bromo-Seltzer King" from Baltimore, purchased the property. Two flanking wings were added in the early 20th century. A series of terraced gardens extend from the front of the house toward the Waccamaw River. Also on the property is a large two-story guest house (c. 1910), tennis courts, a bowling alley, stables, five tenant houses and a frame church. The property also contains two cemeteries and other plantation-related outbuildings.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Fairfield Rice Mill Chimney is a historic rice mill chimney located near Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. It is one of seven known extant rice mill chimneys in Georgetown County. It was associated with Fairfield, one of several productive plantations on the Waccamaw River. The chimney is octagonal shaped and approximately 35 feet high. In the 1930s the Fairfield rice mill, with its steam engine, boiler, and other machinery, was taken to Dearborn, Michigan, reassembled, refurbished, and put back into operation as a museum exhibit in Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Nightingale Hall Rice Mill Chimney, also known as Nightingale Plantation, is a historic rice mill chimney located near Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. This rice mill chimney is significant as one of seven known extant rice mill chimneys in Georgetown County. It is associated with Nightingale Hall, one of several productive plantations on the Pee Dee River. The chimney is approximately 29 feet high, and 6 feet square at the base.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

DeBordieu Colony, DeBordieu Beach or simply DeBordieu is a private, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States. It consists of approximately 2,700 acres (11 km2) of land, of which roughly 800 acres is wildlife preserve inaccessible to the citizens of Georgetown County. Parts of DeBordieu lie on Debidue Island. DeBordieu is located south of Pawleys Island and north of Georgetown east of U.S. Route 17. It is an oceanfront gated community with a private golf and country club. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 858.

Waccamaw High School (WHS) is one of four schools that are encompassed in the Waccamaw school family on the Waccamaw Neck of Georgetown County, South Carolina. Opening in 1990, it was a school that consisted of grades 7–11, with its first senior class being the class of 1992. In 1996, the first group of students who helped open the school as 7th grade middle schoolers graduated.

Prince Frederick's Chapel Ruins is a historic site in Plantersville, South Carolina.The first church on this site, known as Prince Frederick's Chapel, Pee Dee, was built in 1848 on a site donated by the Rev. Hugh Fraser in 1834. Most of the parishioners were rice planters along the Pee Dee River. These ruins are of the second church here, approved by a committee of Robert Francis Withers Allston, Davison McDowell, and Francis Weston and begun in 1859 but interrupted by the Civil War. The Gothic Revival church designed by Louis J. Barbot was completed in 1876 with a gift of $1,700 by John Earle Allston. With the decline of rice planting the church gradually fell into disrepair and was eventually deemed unsafe. It was demolished in 1966, leaving only the front wall and tower. The ruins were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Pawleys Island Historic District is a national historic district located at Pawleys Island, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 12 contributing buildings and contains buildings ranging from ca. 1780 to post World War I, and includes shoreline which the owners of these homes think they own, and marshland. The building style is a variation of West Indian architecture which has been adapted to Pawleys climatic conditions. The original houses on Pawleys are not mansions but summer retreats, sturdily built and large enough to accommodate big families. Designed for the greatest degree of ventilation, with porches on multiple sides and with high brick foundations providing protection against gale tides, many of the 20th-century buildings have adhered to the traditional design that has proven well suited to this environment. The houses are equipped with large chimneys and fireplaces. Breezeways attached at the rear of the houses led to the kitchens. Servant's quarters were usually one or two room cabins equipped with fireplaces.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
