On 25 November 2008, the Associação de Municípios do Oeste (Association of Municipalities of the West), by the approval of the municipal assemblies (assembleias municipais) of each of its constituent municipalities, converted itself into the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste. The law formally establishing the names, borders, and duties of the intermunicipal communities and metropolitan areas was approved by the Assembly of the Republic on 12 September 2013.Oeste is the successor to Associação de Municípios do Oeste (Association of Municipalities of the West) and Comunidade Urbana do Oeste (Urban Community of the West; abbreviated ComUrb Oeste), which had been instituted on 29 March 2004.Oeste is coterminous with the statistical NUTS 3 subregion Oeste within the NUTS II Centro Region. It is a region famous for its fruits and vegetables production, namely the famous pêra rocha variety.

The Museu de Cerâmica, located in Quinta Visconde de Sacavém, in the city of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, is a ceramics museum. It shows a permanent exhibition in its 19th-century romantic-style manor house surrounded by gardens, that consists of ceramics of different ages and styles. The Quinta, or Estate, was built in the 1890s by the 2nd Visconde de Sacavém, José Joaquim Pinto da Silva, a collector, ceramicist and important patron of ceramicists in Caldas da Rainha. A workshop, the Atelier Cerâmico, was set up on the Estate by the Visconde de Sacavém and operated between 1892 and 1896, under the direction of the Austrian sculptor José Füller.

The Museu de José Malhoa (José Malhoa Museum), in Caldas da Rainha, is a regional Portuguese museum, that hosts the finest collection of the Portuguese naturalist painter José Malhoa. The museum building, the first purpose-built museum in Portugal, was constructed in 1940 and enlarged in 1950 and 1957. The museum's collection includes paintings, sculptures, medals, drawings and ceramics from the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Caldas da Rainha — Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, Coto e São Gregório. The civil parish has an area of 12.00 square kilometres (4.63 sq mi) and had a population of 16,114 at the 2011 census.Along with Santo Onofre, Nossa Senhora do Pópulo was one of the two parishes which make up the city of Caldas da Rainha.

Caldas da Rainha (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkaldɐʒ ðɐ ʁɐˈiɲɐ] ) is a medium-sized Portuguese city in the Oeste region, in the historical province of Estremadura, and in the district of Leiria. The city serves as the seat of the larger municipality of the same name and of the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste (OesteCIM, Intermunicipal Community of the West). At the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 51,729 in an area of 255.69 square kilometres (98.72 sq mi), with 30,343 residing in the city. Although the city itself lies about 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi) inland, three of the municipality's civil parishes lie on the Atlantic Ocean. Caldas da Rainha is best known for its sulphurous hot springs and ceramic pottery. The settlement was founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor (Rainha Dona Leonor), who established a hospital and a church at the site of some therapeutic hot springs. The Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor (Queen Leonor Spring Water Hospital, or Thermal Hospital) is the oldest purpose-built institution of its kind in the world, with five centuries of history. The city's name, often shortened to simply "Caldas", can be translated as "Queen's Hot Springs", "Queen's Spa", or "Queen's Baths". Caldas da Rainha is a UNESCO Creative City. It is home to many cultural institutions. The city's nine museums cover art, history, and cycling. Cultural and sports venues include Centro Cultural e de Congressos (CCC, Cultural and Conference Centre), a centre for performing arts, exhibitions, and conferences; Expoeste – Centro de Exposições do Oeste (Exhibition Centre of the West), which hosts exhibitions and festivals; a bullring; several football (soccer) pitches; and a multi-sport municipal complex. Caldas hosts six professional and higher-educational institutions, including a major arts and design school and a school devoted to ceramics. In 2014 Caldas da Rainha had the best public secondary school in Portugal based on national test scores.

It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Caldas da Rainha — Santo Onofre and Serra do Bouro. The population in 2011 was 11,926, in an area of 27.51 km². Along with Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, Santo Onofre is one of the two parishes which make up the city of Caldas da Rainha.
