On August 21, 1995, Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529, an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia flying from Atlanta, Georgia, to Gulfport, Mississippi, crashed in the community of Burwell between the cities of Bowdon, Georgia, and Carrollton, Georgia. Out of the 29 people on board, 9 were killed. The accident bore similarities to Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 2311, which had occurred four years earlier, and resulted in the deaths of all 23 people on board. The inquiries of both crashes concluded that design flaws in the aircraft's propellers were to blame.

John Tanner Park

John Tanner Park, formerly known as John Tanner State Park, is a 138 acres (56 ha) Carroll County park located between Carrollton and Mount Zion. The park is named after John Tanner, a local businessman who operated the park from 1954 to 1971. He operated it as Tanner's Beach. The park itself is well known for its water-friendly recreation. It contains two lakes, one 12 acres (4.9 ha) and the other 16 acres (6.5 ha), and the largest sand beach of any Georgia state park. There is also a walking and nature trail for land-dwellers. It became managed by Carroll County in 2010 and was purchased by Carroll County in 2013.

Dr. James L. Lovvorn House

The Dr. James L. Lovvorn House, built about 1895, is on a corner lot, at 113 East College Street, Bowdon, Carroll County, Georgia, at the intersections of GA 100 and GA 166. The owner, Dr. James Lewis Lovvorn (1862–1926), was a graduate of Bowdon College; Medical College of Georgia, Augusta; and University of Georgia Medical Department, 1886. He was the son of Edward M. and Nancy C. Lovvorn, of Randolph Co, AL.On December 30, 1888, he married Miss Carrie M. Johnson (1867–1959), the daughter of Thomas P. and Milly Ann King Johnson. Having bought their lot from John Shelnutt in 1888, Dr. Lovvorn and his wife planned the house with gas lights and a fireplace in every room. The architect was George F. Barber. Dr. Lovvorn's medical office was on the first floor. The Queen Anne style house has East Lake-style woodwork throughout and was privately owned and occupied in 2010. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, #88000595.
