Sunningwell

The Midvale Ridge is a natural region in South Central England formed by a band of low-lying limestone hills that run from southeast to northwest from the Vale of Aylesbury to Swindon. It has been designated as National Character Area 109 by Natural England, the UK Government's advisors on the natural environment. The Midvale Ridge crosses the counties of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. It is surrounded by the lowlands of the Oxfordshire clay vales and offers good views over the local countryside. The area is dominated by agriculture with a mixed arable/ pastoral farming landscape. Cereals are the most important arable crop.The main settlements are the town of Swindon in the west, and the city of Oxford, in the centre. Otherwise the area is relatively sparsely populated with small nucleated villages along the crest of the ridge and along the springline. Soils comprise a mix of heavy rendzinas, stagnogleys and lighter sandy brown earths with small patches of sandy soils.The area has a number of important geological sites and has yielded fossils of international importance, including the holotypes for several ammonite species and several species of prehistoric sponges known only from the Faringdon area.

Tilsley Park is an athletics stadium in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, which is home to Oxford Saints American Football Club. It is managed by Abingdon School on behalf of Vale of White Horse District Council.Abingdon School took over the management of Tilsley Park in 2014 and since then has undertaken a full programme of improvement and investment including a new 4G surface and throws area, as well as the refurbishment of the facility’s social areas. Tilsley Park now provides some of the best sporting facilities in the region for a variety of clubs and organisations.

Bayworth is a hamlet in the civil parish of Sunningwell about 3 miles (5 km) south of Oxford. Bayworth was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire.

Chandlings, or Chandlings Prep School, known until 2007 as Chandlings Manor School, is an independent co-educational preparatory school at Bagley Wood near Kennington, a village south of Oxford. The school occupies a site of 62 acres (25 hectares) with a wide variety of sports and educational facilities and is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools.

Boars Hill is a hamlet 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Oxford, straddling the boundary between the civil parishes of Sunningwell and Wootton. Historically, it was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire.

Fitzharrys School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England. There are about 650 students attending. The headteacher since March 2020 is Will Speke, who took over from Jonathan Dennett. The school emblem that adorns the gateway and uniform badges depicts three Harriers on a light blue background.

Abingdon United Football Club is a football club based in Abingdon-on-Thames, England. The club are currently members of the Hellenic League Division One and play at The Northcourt.

Jarn Mound is a mound on Boars Hill which was completed in 1931. It was commissioned by Sir Arthur Evans to provide and preserve the view of the "dreaming spires" of Oxford and the surroundings which the poet Matthew Arnold had immortalised in his poem Thyrsis in 1865. Jarn is a traditional name for the western side of Boars Hill in the nearby village of Wootton.

Sugworth is a 0.6-hectare (1.5-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site dates to the Cromerian Stage, an interglacial over half a million years ago. It is a river channel cut into Kimmeridge Clay of the Late Jurassic, and it has rich deposits of vertebrates, ostracods, molluscs, beetles, plant remains and pollen.

John Mason School (JMS) is a secondary school with sixth form in the town of Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

Chilswell is a small settlement in the parish of Cumnor, Oxfordshire. It lies between the village of South Hinksey and Boars Hill. In 1974 it was transferred from Berkshire. The place was first mentioned in 1180 as Chiefleswelle. The name is of Old English origin, and appears to mean 'the stream of a man called Cifel'. An older form of the name is Childsworth, and the place is mentioned by that name in the poem Thyrsis by Matthew Arnold. Arnold's "signal elm" is in a field nearby, bought by the Oxford Preservation Trust from All Souls College, Oxford in 2009.The remains of a Roman villa have been found nearby.Chilswell House, on the edge of Boars Hill, was built in 1907 to be the home of the poet Robert Bridges, the writer Monica Bridges and their three children.Chilswell Valley (also known as Happy Valley), between Chilswell and South Hinksey, is a nature reserve managed by Oxford City Council.

The Abingdon Learning Trust (ALT) is a multi-academy trust, exempt charity and company limited by guarantee, based in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England. Three schools in Abingdon are part of the trust, two secondary schools: John Mason School and Fitzharrys School, and one primary school, Rush Common School.
