The Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) Foundation was established in 1999 in the framework of a collaboration agreement reached by the Education and Industry Departments of the Basque Government, the University of the Basque Country, the Regional Government of Gipuzkoa, the City of Donostia and the Kutxa savings bank. Iberdrola participated in the venture during 2000-2003. In 2004 Naturcorp Multiservicios joined the project, followed by Telefónica in 2005. The DIPC was born as an intellectual center aimed at fostering and providing for the development of highest level basic research in material science. Since its early days, the DIPC has been an open institution, bound to the University of the Basque Country, committed to the internationalization of all basic science engaged in the Basque Country related to physics and material science.

Montaña Suiza ("The Swiss Mountain" in English) is a steel scenic railway roller coaster located at Monte Igueldo Amusement Park, on the coast at San Sebastián, Spain. It was designed and built by German engineer Erich Heidrich and opened at the site in 1928. It is the oldest steel roller coaster still operating in the world. The ride was built with wooden running rails in a trough, like usual scenic railways. The trough is partially set into the landscape and is of concrete construction. The ride lacks the traditional supporting trestles of scenic railways. Instead, the track runs in depressions set into the ground and along the top of a coastal wall at one point. The running rails were changed to steel at a later unknown dateThe roller coaster operates with two trains, each of which are composed of two 2x5 person cars. The cars are wooden in construction and ride on steel bogies, like the scenic railways at Margate, UK, Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, UK and Luna Park, Melbourne. A brakeman rides on board each train to control its speed.

Santa Clara Island (Spanish: Isla de Santa Clara; Basque: Santa Klara uhartea) is an island located in San Sebastian, Spain, in the middle of the bay of Donostia. It is located between the two most important mountains of the city, Urgull and Igueldo. It measures 400 metres (1,300 feet) across, and rises to a height of 48 metres (157 feet), with steep sides. The island has a small beach which only appears with low tide. There is a small bar and a small port. Despite the small size of the island, the beach has a lifeguard service because of its popularity in the summer. The concrete pier of Santa Clara is served to Donostia by boat, running every 30 minutes. The island has an uninhabited lighthouse.
