Mahatma Gandhi is a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Church Street, Pietermaritzburg, depicting the Indian independence campaigner and nonviolent pacifist as a young man.The statue was unveiled in 1993 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, marking the centenary since Gandhi was thrown from a train at Pietermaritzburg railway station.

The Bessie Head Library (before 2005 also known as Msunduzi Municipal Library, and before that as the Natal Society Library) in Pietermaritzburg, Msunduzi Local Municipality, is the oldest library in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was established in 1849 and became a legal deposit library in 1916. It is named after the writer Bessie Head.

The KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court of South Africa is a superior court of law with general jurisdiction over the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The main seat of the division is at Pietermaritzburg, while a subordinate local seat at Durban has concurrent jurisdiction over the coastal region of the province. City Oval (formerly Alexandra Park and sometimes called the Pietermaritzburg Oval), is a multi-purpose stadium in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The 12,000 capacity stadium is currently used predominantly for cricket matches, with the ground being used by KwaZulu-Natal Inland men's and women's teams, KwaZulu-Natal and Dolphins (who also play at Kingsmead, Durban), and hosted two matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup. It is one of only three first-class cricket grounds in the world to have a tree within the boundary ropes (the others being St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, United Kingdom and VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen, Netherlands), and any cricketer that scores a century or takes a five-wicket haul in a match at the City Oval gets to plant a tree at the ground. The City Oval Pavilion is based on the design of Queen's Park cricket ground in Chesterfield, United Kingdom.

The Pietermaritzburg tramway network formed part of the public transport system in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, for just over 32 years in the first half of the 20th century.

Pietermaritzburg Railway Station is the main railway station serving the city of Pietermaritzburg (/ˌpiːtərˈmærɪtsbɜːrɡ/), South Africa. It is located on Railway and Pine Streets in the South Western corner of the city centre. The station is a stop on long-distance passenger rail services operated by Shosholoza Meyl. Historically, the station is famous as being the place where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off a train for riding first class in 1893.

Shuter House is situated at 381 Langalibalele Street (Longmarket Street) in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal South Africa and designed by the well-known architect Phillip Dudgeon who also designed The Old Durban Town Hall. The building was declared a National Monument (now known as a heritage landmark) on 16 September 1988Shuter House is a single-story building with a pyramid roof. It has a verandah along three sides and plastered brick walls with a simulated stone course and ornate timber columns.

Maritzburg College is a semi-private English-medium high school for boys situated in the city of Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1863: 18  and it's the oldest boys' high school in KwaZulu-Natal – and one of the oldest schools in South Africa. It is attended by 1 265 students, of whom approximately 470 are boarders.Once renowned in the main for its rugby and strongly traditional ethos, Maritzburg College continues to attain a 100% pass rate in the annual National Senior Certificate results, and since the start of the 21st Century has added strong cultural and pastoral programmes, including a jazz band and vigorous inter-house programme. With (amongst others) 28 rugby teams, 22 cricket teams, 19 basketball teams and 18 hockey teams, the school continues to offer its long-established, vigorous sporting programme too. In December 2022, alumni Jared Campbell and Angelo Walstroom earned their international sporting colours for hockeys 5s - in doing so, becoming the school's 321st and 322nd sporting internationals.

Pietermaritzburg (; Zulu: umGungundlovu) is the capital and second-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1838 and is currently governed by the Msunduzi Local Municipality. Its Zulu name umGungundlovu is the name used for the district municipality. Pietermaritzburg is popularly called Maritzburg in Afrikaans, English and Zulu alike, and often informally abbreviated to PMB. It is a regionally important industrial hub, producing aluminium, timber and dairy products, as well as the main economic hub of Umgungundlovu District Municipality. The public sector is a major employer in the city due to local, district and provincial governments located here. Msunduzi Local Municipality is a local municipality in Umgungundlovu District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It encompasses the city of Pietermaritzburg, which is the capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province and the main economic hub of Umgungundlovu District Municipality. Msunduzi Municipality is situated on the N3 highway at a junction of an industrial corridor (from Durban to Pietermaritzburg) and an agro-industrial corridor (stretching from Pietermaritzburg to Estcourt). On the regional scale, it is located at the cross section of the N3 corridor and the Greytown Road corridor to the north, a tourist route to Drakensberg and Kokstad Road to the south.The city of Pietermaritzburg is a provincial and national centre of educational excellence. Pietermaritzburg is a seat of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is home to several other institutions of higher learning.
