The Bessie Head Library (before 2005 also known as Msunduzi Municipal Library, and before that as the Natal Society Library) in Pietermaritzburg, Msunduzi Local Municipality, is the oldest library in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was established in 1849 and became a legal deposit library in 1916. It is named after the writer Bessie Head.

Pietermaritzburg City Hall (Afrikaans: Pietermaritzburg-stadsaal) is a historic city hall located at Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The Pietermaritzburg tramway network formed part of the public transport system in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, for just over 32 years in the first half of the 20th century.

Mahatma Gandhi is a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Church Street, Pietermaritzburg, depicting the Indian independence campaigner and nonviolent pacifist as a young man.The statue was unveiled in 1993 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, marking the centenary since Gandhi was thrown from a train at Pietermaritzburg railway station.

Shuter House is situated at 381 Langalibalele Street (Longmarket Street) in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal South Africa and designed by the well-known architect Phillip Dudgeon who also designed The Old Durban Town Hall. The building was declared a National Monument (now known as a heritage landmark) on 16 September 1988Shuter House is a single-story building with a pyramid roof. It has a verandah along three sides and plastered brick walls with a simulated stone course and ornate timber columns.

The Cathedral of the Holy Nativity is the home of the Anglican Diocese of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in the kwaZulu-Natal Province. It is the episcopal seat of the Bishop of Natal. The cathedral is located in Langalibalele Street. The building of the cathedral followed the uniting of two city parishes while Philip Russell was bishop, that is between 1974 and 1981. After being translated to Cape Town as archbishop, Russell returned to dedicate the cathedral on 22 November 1981. The building is modern in design and is not universally loved.

City Oval (formerly Alexandra Park and sometimes called the Pietermaritzburg Oval), is a multi-purpose stadium in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The 12,000 capacity stadium is currently used predominantly for cricket matches, with the ground being used by KwaZulu-Natal Inland men's and women's teams, KwaZulu-Natal and Dolphins (who also play at Kingsmead, Durban), and hosted two matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup. It is one of only three first-class cricket grounds in the world to have a tree within the boundary ropes (the others being St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, United Kingdom and VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen, Netherlands), and any cricketer that scores a century or takes a five-wicket haul in a match at the City Oval gets to plant a tree at the ground. The City Oval Pavilion is based on the design of Queen's Park cricket ground in Chesterfield, United Kingdom.

St. Nicholas Diocesan School is a diocesan Anglican school, located in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. St. Nicholas is an independent school catering for boys and girls in Grades RR to 12, and is a member of the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa.

Woodburn Rugby Stadium

Pietermaritzburg Railway Station is the main railway station serving the city of Pietermaritzburg (/ˌpiːtərˈmærɪtsbɜːrɡ/), South Africa. It is located on Railway and Pine Streets in the South Western corner of the city centre. The station is a stop on long-distance passenger rail services operated by Shosholoza Meyl. Historically, the station is famous as being the place where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off a train for riding first class in 1893.

Maritzburg College is a semi-private English-medium high school for boys situated in the city of Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1863: 18  and it's the oldest boys' high school in KwaZulu-Natal – and one of the oldest schools in South Africa. It is attended by 1 265 students, of whom approximately 470 are boarders.Once renowned in the main for its rugby and strongly traditional ethos, Maritzburg College continues to attain a 100% pass rate in the annual National Senior Certificate results, and since the start of the 21st Century has added strong cultural and pastoral programmes, including a jazz band and vigorous inter-house programme. With (amongst others) 28 rugby teams, 22 cricket teams, 19 basketball teams and 18 hockey teams, the school continues to offer its long-established, vigorous sporting programme too. In December 2022, alumni Jared Campbell and Angelo Walstroom earned their international sporting colours for hockeys 5s - in doing so, becoming the school's 321st and 322nd sporting internationals.

Pietermaritzburg (; Zulu: umGungundlovu) is the capital and second-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1838 and is currently governed by the Msunduzi Local Municipality. Its Zulu name umGungundlovu is the name used for the district municipality. Pietermaritzburg is popularly called Maritzburg in Afrikaans, English and Zulu alike, and often informally abbreviated to PMB. It is a regionally important industrial hub, producing aluminium, timber and dairy products, as well as the main economic hub of Umgungundlovu District Municipality. The public sector is a major employer in the city due to local, district and provincial governments located here. The city has many schools and tertiary education institutions, including a campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It had a population of 228,549 in 1991; the current population is estimated at over 600,000 residents (including neighbouring townships) and has one of the largest populations of Indian South Africans in South Africa. Pietermaritzburg is an emerging metropolitan area.
