The Emma Abbott Memorial Chapel is a late Victorian church located at 52 Cooper St., Charleston, South Carolina. On October 4, 1890, the Citadel Square Baptist Church bought a parcel at the northwest corner of Cooper and America Streets for the construction of a mission church serving the Eastside. The land was marshy and had to be filled at a cost of $1500. In January 1891, Citadel Square Baptist Church learned that it had been named as one of several beneficiaries of the estate of Emma Abbott, a popular opera singer. She had attended church at Citadel Square Baptist Church during trips to Charleston in 1880, 1886, and February 1888.Abbott left the church $5,000, but because of New York probate laws, the gift could not be released until January 1892. In the meantime, the church began foundation work for the new church. The church hired Richmond, Virginia architect S.H. Foulk to design their new mission. The work was performed by John Murphy for $4,000; he finished the work in December 1892. The cost of the building had been higher than expected, and the steeple was not built. A two-story entrance tower appears to have been a later addition.The church was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and has broad gables with shingles, narrow weatherboard siding, and large round-topped openings. The interior is executed largely in wood.Since 1977, the church has been occupied by the Mt. Sinai Holiness Church of Deliverance.

Bintü Atelier is an African restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. It was named one of the twenty best new restaurants of 2024 by Bon Appétit. The restaurant opened in June 2023 by Bintou N’Daw Young, who is also the head chef.

The Jackson Street Freedman's Cottages are four small worker housing units at 193–199 Jackson Street in Charleston, South Carolina. They are simple frame structures with gabled roofs and front piazzas, built in the 1890s to meet demand for worker housing. The stylistic appellation "freedman's cottage" is based on the incorrect belief that these types of houses were originally commonly built for recently emancipated African Americans after the American Civil War. "Charleston cottage" is used to refer to the house. These four cottages were recently rehabilitated by Cameron Glaws of Brown-Glaws Contractors. The renovation of the Jackson Street Freedman's Cottages started in April 2018 and was completed in December 2018. The buildings were rehabilitated according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The rehabilitation of these historic buildings included the use of State and Federal Historic Tax Credits.The cottages were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

Meeting Street Manor is housing complex located in the upper Eastside in Charleston, South Carolina, and was the city's first housing development. When built in the 1930s, the development was technically two racially segregated halves with separate names. Since desegregation, both components are typically referred to as Meeting Street Manor, originally the name for only the Whites-only portion.

Charles A. Brown High School (a.k.a. C. A. Brown High School) was a high school open from 1962 to 1982 in the predominantly African-American community on the east side of Charleston, South Carolina, United States. The school was built because of the growing population in the downtown community It was located at 25 Blake Street and became part of a 1960s project to provide higher quality education to African American students.

The Josiah Smith Tennent House is a historic house in Charleston, South Carolina. The house was built by Josiah Smith Tennent in 1859 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.In 1993, the city gave the property known as the Josiah Smith Tennent House to nonprofit Elpis Inc. At the time, the house was little more than a shell, and the nonprofit intended to restore the building as a community center. A restoration followed, aided by the community development grants from the city, private donations estimated in the millions, and a $1.73 million mortgage that Elpis took out on the building in 2003. The restoration received a South Carolina Historic Preservation Award in 2004.Elpis outfitted part of the building as a dental clinic, helped established a day care center there, and housed other nonprofit groups in the building. In March 2008, it was announced that Charleston would spend $1.4 million to buy the house when a nonprofit that received more than $1 million in municipal grants toward renovating the building as a community center defaulted on its mortgage.The small front yard of the building became the Philip Simmons Children's Garden, honoring the master blacksmith.

The Cigar Factory is a building on the National Historical Register. Located at 701 East Bay Street, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, it was constructed in 1881 and opened in 1882 as the Cotton Mill of Charleston. In 1912, it was purchased by the American Cigar Company who converted it into a cigar factory that was the largest private employer in Charleston during the 1930s. In the 1940s, it was the location of the 1945–1946 Charleston Cigar Factory strike where the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" emerged. A $30 million redevelopment of the structure began in 2014. By 2017, the factory was mostly leased. Current businesses in the building include restaurants, salons, an event venue, and an ophthalmologist's office.

St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church is a historic church located at 18 Hanover St., Charleston, South Carolina. In 1832, the Charleston Protestant Episcopal Domestic Female Missionary Society bought the land from the Bank of South Carolina. On October 13, 1839, the church opened for its first service, and the building was consecrated on July 14, 1840. The surrounding property was put to use as a cemetery before the building was constructed; the oldest grave dates to 1835. On October 18, 1912, the church was finally incorporated as its own church and not just a mission. It was renovated in 1939 and again in 1947 but remains essentially unaltered from its original 1839 appearance.On January 29, 2015, the Preservation Society of Charleston recognized work on the church with one of its annual Carolopolis Awards for excellence in restoration.

Hampstead Village is a neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina in the US, also known as the Eastside or the East Side. A prominent mercant, Henry Laurens, bought several tracts totaling 99 acres where Hampstead Village is today. He began acquiring the land in 1769 with a purchase of land from George Austin, and then he added nearby parcels.Laurens had his holdings platted on an English model, with Mary St. to the south (bordering Wraggborough), the edge of the Cooper River to the east, King St. to the west, and an unnamed creek near present-day Cooper St. to the north. Advertisements for lots in 1769 included mentions of a central square to be planned out by the first 21 buyers; that square was created and is today known as Hampstead Mall. Sales were lackluster: he sold only 68 of the 140 lots within the first 21 months. Most of even those lots were sold to Laurens's business parter, Wiliam Bampfield.The Revolutionary War also slowed the development of the new neighborhood. In May 1779, South Carolina governor John Rutledge ordered that the new houses be razed because they blocked the view of the City's defenders of the British forces to the north.

The siege of Charleston was a major engagement and major British victory in the American Revolutionary War, fought in the environs of Charles Town (today Charleston), the capital of South Carolina, between March 29 and May 12, 1780. The British, following the collapse of their northern strategy in late 1777 and their withdrawal from Philadelphia in 1778, shifted their focus to the North American Southern Colonies. After approximately six weeks of siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding the Charleston garrison, surrendered his forces to the British. It was one of the worst American defeats of the war.

Presqu'ile, or Presqui'ile, (pronounced Preesk-eel), the French term for "peninsula", was an appropriate name for the house built at 2 Amherst St., Charleston, South Carolina between 1802 and 1808 because, at the time, the house stood on a finger of high ground that projected into the marshes of the Cooper River. The builder, Jacob Belser, was a planter, attorney, and state senator (1812–15). It has been speculated that the house was designed by Gabriel Manigault. The interior has fine Adamesque decorations of carved wood and a spiral staircase. Originally, there was a single room on the first and second floors and two on the third floor with the stairs set in a semicircular bay on the rear of the house. A square, three-story rear wing in the Greek Revival style was added by Henry Grimke, a planter who acquired the house in 1840. Subsequent owners of the home have included Theodore S. Marion, Joshua T. Ward, Maj. Samuel Porcher (the likely builder of Numertia Plantation), Henry Grimke, Joseph Leary, C.F. Klenke, the Baptist Association, the Historic Charleston Foundation, Arthur Ravenel, Jr. & Co., Jean Ravenel, J. Randolph Pelzer, SPD Investments Company, LLC, Presqu’ile House, LLC, and Presqu’ile, LLC. The home is presently used as a law office by Clawson Fargnoli, LLC. Presqu’ile received Carolopolis Awards in 1967 and 1978 from the Preservation Society of Charleston and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The house has been under an interior and exterior historic easement with the Historic Charleston Foundation since 1973.
