Starkey School

Starkey is an unincorporated community in southern Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community lies south of U.S. 221 near the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is the location of the Starkey School listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Starkey takes its name from the land owned by Tazewell M. Starkey. "The Starkey community took its name from the Starkey family, who, along with the Harveys, Sloans and Fowlers, were among the first settlers. The village incorporated land once owned by Tazewell Starkey. In the days when Roanoke's roads were rough and muddy, Starkey was an important shipping point for apples, barrels and barrel staves, which were sent in great quantities to Winston-Salem, North Carolina."The village had no name until the Roanoke and Southern Railroad connected with the Norfolk and Western Railroad in the early 1890s, when a railroad station was established and named for Tazewell Starkey, who gave the land for a railroad right of way. The Shenandoah Packing company was established here in 1908, and canned 11,000 cans per season of apples, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and beans. Later a Post Office was erected there, but was named "Farland" because another post office in nearby Floyd County, Virginia, also had the name "Starkey. When that name was discontinued, the name Starkey was given to this site in order to conform to the railroad station name. This was an important railroad transportation center for local farmers from Back Creek, Virginia, Cave Spring, Virginia and Bent Mountain, Virginia. Today the community is no longer distinct.

The Church of the Holy Spirit (CHS) is a large Anglican parish in Cave Spring, Virginia, just outside of Roanoke. Founded in 1985 as part of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, CHS left the Episcopal Church in 2000 as part of the Anglican realignment.

Cave Spring High School is a public secondary school in Roanoke, Virginia. It is under the jurisdiction of Roanoke County Public Schools. Cave Spring is one of two high schools that serve southwest Roanoke County and one of five high schools that serve the Roanoke County school district.

North Cross School is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in Roanoke, Virginia for children from age three to twelfth grade. The school was founded in 1944 in Salem, Virginia.

Faith Christian School is a private classical Christian school in Roanoke, Virginia. It was founded in 1997 as an upper school and expanded to include an elementary school in 2004 and a pre-kindergarten in 2014. In August 2007 Faith Christian moved into their building on Buck Mountain Road.

Hidden Valley High School is a public high school in Roanoke County, Virginia. It is one of the five high schools in the Roanoke County Public Schools system. The other four high schools which serve Roanoke County are Cave Spring High School, Glenvar High School, Northside High School and William Byrd High School.

Cave Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The population was 26,755 at the 2020 census. Cave Spring covers much of the area known locally as "Southwest County" which has the most affluent suburbs of Roanoke. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roanoke County's administrative offices are located in Cave Spring, though the independent city of Salem is officially the county seat. The United States Postal Service considers most of the Cave Spring area to be unincorporated Roanoke City.

Tanglewood Mall is a shopping mall in southwest Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. It originally opened for business March 28, 1973. The mall is currently managed by Hackney Real Estate Partners. Tanglewood Mall is located at the intersection of US 220 and Route 419. The Roy L. Weber Expressway's southern terminus is the exit with 419.

The Coffee Pot is a historic roadhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places located in the Grandin Court neighborhood of the independent city of Roanoke, Virginia, U.S.A. Completed in 1936, The Coffee Pot is an example of novelty architecture as its distinctive feature is that of a stucco coffee pot structure that is situated on the roof of the building. Today, this remains as the only active roadhouse located within the Roanoke Valley.

Southern Hills is a neighborhood of the independent city of Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Located geographically as the city's southernmost neighborhood, Southern Hills was annexed from Roanoke County in 1976 and has seen significant residential and commercial development since the 1990s. It borders the neighborhoods of the Franklin-Colonial and South Roanoke on the north, Garden City on the east and Roanoke County on the south and west. Its western boundary runs concurrent with U.S. 220.

Wright is an unincorporated community in southern Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The community lies along U.S. 220 near the Franklin County line.

The Colony House Motor Lodge is a historic motel in Roanoke, Virginia. The motor lodge was built in 1959 in the Googie style and located on a main thoroughfare in what at the time was the outskirts of the city, making it a notable example of mid-20th century trends in design, travel, and lodging. The property consists of two buildings of guest rooms, an office and porte-cochere, and a swimming pool. Despite the changing character of its setting and national lodging trends, the motel remained in business until closing in 2018. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023, and as of 2023 was being renovated for use as a boutique hotel.
