United Nations Avenue

United Nations station is an elevated Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located on the LRT Line 1 (LRT-1) system in Ermita, Manila. It is situated above the intersection of Taft and United Nations Avenues. The station is named after United Nations Avenue, which in turn is named after the United Nations organization. United Nations station is also near educational institutions such as the Technological University of the Philippines, the Philippine Normal University, Adamson University, Santa Isabel College Manila, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Araullo High School and Manila Science High School. It is convenient to several tourist destinations including Rizal Park, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Anthropology, and the National Museum of Natural History. It is also adjacent to the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region office and National Bureau of Investigation headquarters. It is also near public squares such as Plaza Salamanca and Plaza Rueda, as well as Paco Park. United Nations station is the seventh stop from Baclaran and the twelfth from Fernando Poe Jr.

Plaza Rueda is a public square in Ermita, Manila, bounded by Taft Avenue to the west, United Nations Avenue to the north and General Luna Street to the east. Originally a low, swampy ground, the plaza was established by the Municipal Board of Manila, known today the Manila City Council, on November 15, 1915, and dedicated to Spanish journalist and poet Salvador Rueda, who visited the Philippines that year.

Plaza Olivia Salamanca (Filipino: Liwasang Olivia Salamanca), also known simply as Plaza Salamanca, is a public square in Ermita, Manila, bounded by Taft Avenue to the east, Teodoro M. Kalaw Avenue to the north and General Luna Street to the west. It is dedicated to Olivia Salamanca, one of the Philippines' first female physicians, with a historical marker dedicated to her being installed in 1955. Unlike other plazas in the City of Manila, Plaza Olivia Salamanca also falls under the jurisdiction of the National Parks Development Committee, the agency responsible for maintaining the neighboring Rizal Park.

Aguinaldo International School Manila (abbreviation: AIS Manila) is a private school in Paco, Manila, Philippines. It is non-denominational and co-educational, and serves both local and expat families. It is headed by a Canadian superintendent, Mr. Tim Boulton. Ermita is a district in Manila, Philippines. Located at the central part of the city, the district is a significant center of finance, education, culture, and commerce. Ermita serves as the civic center of the city, bearing the seat of city government and a large portion of the area's employment, business, and entertainment activities. Private and government offices, museums, and universities thrive in Ermita. It is also home to famous tourist attractions and landmarks, notably the Rizal Park, the premier national park of the Philippines. Originally, Ermita and its neighboring district Malate were posh neighborhoods for Manila's high society during the early 20th century where large, grandiose mansions once stood. Ermita and its surroundings were heavily bombed and flattened during the Second World War after it became a battleground during the Manila massacre. Casino Español de Manila is a club established in 1893 by Spaniards living in the Philippines as their exclusive venue for recreational and social activities. It later opened its doors to Filipino members to foster Spanish-Filipino ties in the country. It is located at No. 855 Teodoro M. Kalaw Extension, Ermita, Manila. It is one of the three Casino Español clubhouses in the country, the others being in Cebu (built in 1920 and still operating) and Iloilo (built in 1926 and left in ruins after World War II destruction).

Manila Science High School (Filipino: Mataás na Páaraláng Pang-aghám ng Maynila), colloquially known as MaSci, is a public science high school in the Philippines. It is located on Taft Avenue at the corner of Padre Faura Street in Ermita, Manila, and was established on October 1, 1963 as the first science high school in the Philippines.

The Supreme Court (Filipino: Kataas-taasang Hukuman; colloquially referred to as the Korte Suprema (also used in formal writing) is the highest court in the Philippines. The Supreme Court was established by the Second Philippine Commission on June 11, 1901 through the enactment of its Act No. 136, an Act which abolished the Real Audiencia de Manila, the predecessor of the Supreme Court.The Supreme Court compound is located in what was formerly a part of the University of the Philippines Manila campus. It occupies the corner of Padre Faura Street and Taft Avenue in Ermita, Manila, with the main building sited directly in front of Philippine General Hospital’s cancer institute.

The Philam Life Theater, also styled Philamlife Theater, was a performing arts venue at 1440 United Nations Avenue in the Ermita district of Manila, the Philippines. It opened in 1961 as the Philam Life Auditorium and was designed by Filipino architect Carlos Arguelles as part of the corporate headquarters for the Philam Life insurance company (now AIA Philippines). The International Style concert hall in the eastern annex of the Philam Life Building is known for its superior acoustics and elegant interior. It served as Manila's cultural center for almost a decade and has played host to world-renowned musicians, choirs and symphony orchestras over its 53-year history, including Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, Marian Anderson, Pinchas Zukerman and Cecile Licad. The theater also served as the home of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Educational Theater Association.In 2012, SM Investments subsidiary SM Development Corp. purchased the entire 3-hectare (7.4-acre) Philam Life Manila complex including its theater and announced its plans to redevelop the property into a condominium complex. Philam Life vacated the property and relocated its headquarters to Bonifacio Global City in April 2013 (now in AIA Tower), and its customer service center to Bay City in June 2013.
