Stockingford railway station

Stockingford is a suburb of the town of Nuneaton, in the county of Warwickshire, England, about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Nuneaton town centre. Stockingford first appeared in records in 1157, named Stoccingford, derived from the Old English Stocc; to root up trees. It therefore has its origin as a clearance in a wood, by a ford across a stream. It was historically a small hamlet within the old parish of Nuneaton. In the early 19th century the area became industrialised, with several collieries and brickworks, and the population expanded rapidly. In 1824, the church of St Paul's was built, originally as a chapel of ease to the main church in Nuneaton. Stockingford became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1846, and St Paul's church became a parish church.Stockingford was served by its own railway station on the Birmingham to Nuneaton line from 1864 until 1968. There have been proposals to reopen the station in recent years.Stockingford was mentioned in George Eliot's novel Scenes of Clerical Life as 'Paddiford Common'.The area is adjacent to Whittleford Park, a public park and nature reserve, reclaimed from former industrial land in the 2000s.

St Paul's Church, Stockingford, is a Church of England parish church in Stockingford, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. It is part of the Diocese of Coventry.

Whittleford Park is a 43 hectare greenspace located between Stockingford and Camp Hill in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Although its development as a public park by Warwickshire County Council only started in 2005, it has a long industrial history, being the site of coal mining, and brick and tile making.

Camp Hill is a suburb of the town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire located around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-west of the town centre. It is also a ward of Nuneaton and Bedworth borough, which had a population of 9,599 in the 2021 census.The name of the area is said to have been derived from an old Roman camp.

The Roman Catholic parish of St Anne, Nuneaton, in Warwickshire, England, serves the western side of Nuneaton and outlying villages towards Coleshill. The parish is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham and a part of the Rugby Deanery. The current Parish Priest is Fr. George. The church (rebuilt in 2000) is on Camp Hill Road, Nuneaton. The parish was formed in 1948 and includes St Joseph's Church in New Arley. Both churches were originally built in response to the great influx of workers (mainly miners) who arrived in North Warwickshire with their families during the twenty five years or so following 1920.

Nuneaton Academy (formerly Alderman Smith School) is a coeducational secondary school with academy status located in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England.Originally known as Alderman Smith School, the school was formally closed in 2011 and reopened the next day as Nuneaton Academy, with largely the same pupils and staff. The Nuneaton Academy is part of a trust called the Midlands Academy Trust with Hartshill Academy, George Elliot Academy and Heath Lane Academy. In 2023, it was announced that United Learning Trust will take over the MAT Trust.

Hartshill Academy (formerly Hartshill School) is a mixed secondary school located in Hartshill area of Nuneaton in the English county of Warwickshire.Feeder schools include Nathaniel Newton Infant School and Michael Drayton Junior School amongst others. Established in 1957, the school converted to academy status in 2012 and is now sponsored by the Midland Academy Trust.Hartshill Academy educates pupils from the Hartshill area of Nuneaton and surrounding areas. The school offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. The school formally joined United Learning in December 2023.

Hartshill Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Hartshill on the outskirts of Nuneaton, Warwickshire (grid reference SP325942). It is on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register due to erosion, structural problems and vandalism; most notably when the castle was damaged by vandals in October 2016.The site is also privately owned, but can be viewed from a nearby footpath adjacent to the site of the castle.

Hartshill is a large village and civil parish in North Warwickshire, England, adjoined with the much larger town of Nuneaton, the town centre of which is 2.5 miles (4 km) to the south-east. The parish borders the district of Nuneaton and Bedworth at the south, the North Warwickshire district parishes of Ansley at the south-west, Mancetter at the north-west, and Caldecote at the east, and the parish of Witherley in Leicestershire to the north-east from which it is separated by the A5 road. The market town of Atherstone is 3.5 miles (6 km) to the north-west. At the 2021 census, the civil parish of Hartshill, which also includes the hamlet of Oldbury had a population of 3,655.The village stands on a hill overlooking the Leicestershire plains to the north. The county boundary is defined by the A5 road, the former Roman Watling Street. The area has been settled since at least the Iron Age, just west of Hartshill are the remains of an iron age hill fort. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hardreshull, derived from the old English term meaning Heardred's Hill. Near the centre of the village are the remains of Hartshill Castle, a medieval castle.The village grew due to its quarrying industry, which quarried red syenite and manganese from the local hillside. At one time there were several industrial tramways serving the local quarries and connecting them to the nearby Trent Valley railway line and Coventry Canal. The Talyllyn Railway locomotive Midlander was purchased in 1957 from Jee's quarries at Hartshill.The most famous person associated with Hartshill was the Elizabethan poet Michael Drayton, who was born at Chapel Cottage in Hartshill Green in 1563. The cottage in which he was born was pulled down in 1941 due to a road widening scheme. There was a memorial to him in the form of the village bus shelter, which was erected in 1972, and was made from local stone and shaped like a scroll. This was removed around 2006 due to vandalism and replaced by a plaque. Michael Drayton Junior School in Hartshill also bears his name. Other schools in the village include Hartshill Academy secondary school. The village church of Holy Trinity was built as a commissioners' church between 1843 and 1848 by T.L. Walker. It is made from local stone, and is noted for its large doorway which has six orders of columns and arches. The church is grade II listed.The parish has five pubs: The Stag & Pheasant, The Malt Shovel, Royal Oak, the Hartshill Club, and The Anchor which is on the Coventry Canal. Immediately west of the village is the Hartshill Hayes Country Park, which covers 137 acres (55 ha) of woodland.

Arbury Hall (grid reference SP335893) is a Grade I listed country house in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England, and the ancestral home of the Newdigate family, later the Newdigate-Newdegate and Fitzroy-Newdegate (Viscount Daventry) families.

Arbury Priory was an Augustinian priory in the parish of Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire, England. The priory was founded early in the reign of Henry II (c.1154) by Ralph de Sudley and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. The original endowment consisted of the churches of Chilvers Coton and Dassett, together with associated land and the rights to timber, wood for fuel, and pannage. It was later given the church of Weston under Wetherley by an unknown donor. In succeeding centuries more land was either donated or purchased. In 1235 an enquiry commissioned by the Pope discovered that the priors were living a dissolute life as part of the Arroasian order. He ordered the Bishop of Coventry to convert them to the rule of St Augustine, which he did by transferring suitable monks to Arbury from other establishments to encourage their conversion. At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 the community consisted of a prior and six brothers, plus a number of servants. Arbury was granted to Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, a favourite of the king, whose heiress sold it to Sir Edmund Anderson, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He demolished the priory and used the materials to build Arbury Hall.
