Couzon (Gier)

The canton of Rive-de-Gier is a French administrative division located in the department of Loire and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. At the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015, the canton was expanded from 10 to 11 communes: Châteauneuf Dargoire Farnay La Grand-Croix Lorette Genilac Rive-de-Gier Saint-Joseph Saint-Martin-la-Plaine Saint-Paul-en-Jarez Tartaras

Châteauneuf (French pronunciation: [ʃɑtonœf]) is a commune in the Loire department in central France, midway between Saint-Etienne and Lyon on the A-47 motorway. Châteauneuf is home to one of the units of ArcelorMittal subsidiary Industeel France.

Rive-de-Gier (French pronunciation: [ʁiv də ʒje], literally Bank of Gier) is a commune in the Loire department in central France. In 2020, with a population of 15,086 inhabitants and an area of 7.3 km², the population density is 2,058 inhabitants per km² It was an important center of Loire coal mining basin, glass making and iron and steel manufacture in the 19th century. In the late 20th century the town lost most of its heavy industries.

The Dorlay (French pronunciation: [dɔʁlɛ]) is a river that flows through the Loire department, France. It is a tributary of the Gier, which in turn is a tributary of the Rhône. The Gier valley was formerly heavily industrialized with coal and iron mines and factories.

La Grand-Croix (French pronunciation: [la ɡʁɑ̃ kʁwa]) is a commune and the seat of a canton in the Loire department in central France. It lies in the Gier valley. The commune was the main town of the former canton of La Grand-Croix, arrondissement of Saint-Étienne. It lies on the A47 autoroute. Lyon is 40 kilometres (25 mi) to the east, and Saint-Étienne is 18 kilometres (11 mi) to the west. The commune is close to the Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat.The river Dorlay, a tributary of the Gier that rises in Mont Pilat, forms the border between La Grand-Croix and Lorette.
