It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1977 and retained that rating until 1989.In the period 1975–1979, head chef was Jan Vossen. At least in the period 1987–1990, Theus van Schaik was the head chef. Wim Rekko took over, but could not retain the star.The restaurant was part of Hotel Kasteel Wittem, which closed down in June 2009. The owners Marc and Peter Ritzen had run the hotel for 40 years. The hotel reopened, now without a restaurant, in January 2010.In 2008, Kasteel Wittem and Hostellerie De Hamert celebrated with special arrangements the fact that they were together 100 years in business, the first since 1968, the second since 1948.Restaurant-hotel Kasteel Wittem was a member of the Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise, but left after the sale of the hotel in 2009.

Wahlwiller (Limburgish: Wilder [ˈwɪldəʀ]) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. The village is located south of the Selzerbeek. The name of the village is derived from villare, what means "belonging to a villa". In the 14th century the village is mentioned under names as Waelwilre, Wailwilre and Walwilre. The prefix "wael" indicates that the inhabitants were speaking a Walloon language.Wahlwiller is a road village which developed in the Middle Ages on the road from Maastricht to Aachen. It became an independent parish in 1835. The Catholic St Cunibertus Church is a single-aisled church with a small tower. The church up to the windows dates from the 12th century. It has been enlarged and renovated several times.On the northern side of the village lies the Kruisberg, of Amstel Gold Race fame.

It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1985 and retained that rating until 2005.From the beginning till 2005, when he sold the restaurant, Jan Waghemans was the head chef.Der Bloasbalg was a member of the Alliance Gastronomique Néerlandaise.The restaurant closed down in 2006 and was replaced by restaurant "Les Arômes".

Gulpen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣʏlpə(n)]; Limburgish: Gullepe [ˈɣʏləpə]) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is approximately midway between the Dutch city of Maastricht and the German city of Aachen. Gulpen was a separate municipality until 1999, when it merged with Wittem. The newly formed municipality is called Gulpen-Wittem. The village itself derives its name from the river Gulp, which runs straight through the centre of the village and characterises the townscape. There is a Romanesque tower in the old cemetery, which dates from the 11th Century and is the only still existing part of a mediaeval village church. Considering its construction (its walls are up to 2 metres thick) and its location, it probably also served as defence tower, where the local villagers could go in case of danger. The former rectory, which leans against the tower, dates from 1732. It is now being let as luxurious group accommodation. The current Neo-Romanesque St.Petrus church dates from 1924 and was designed by Casper Franssen. A former monastery that was built in 1932 after a design by Alphons Boosten is being used as town hall. The village is home to the Gulpener Brewery. Every year in June, a walking tour of 70 kilometres is organised that is called the Nacht van Gulpen (Night of Gulpen). A little over a thousand people participate in this event each year.
